When two dwellars submit something you know it's an IotD. Gmr2048 and xoB both found the original at this livejournal entry, via Boing Boing. The Livejournal entry notes:
This frog is a living fossil. It seems it might have split up from other frogs about 150 million years ago and has not changed much since than. There are no close relatives in terms of species for this frog and the nearest one is in the Seychelles islands. It feels like a big bag of jelly when you hold it in your hand and I must say, its a very strong frog.

We managed to find few pairs of the Purple frogs and we filmed/photographed them from many angles. I think we might be the first ones to have filmed this frog.
Mr. Dalyan Varma appears to be an Indian travel writer/blogger and the blog version of his LJ page is here. Check it out, brilliant photography!

it's kind of a pukey puce color.

I'd rather see a Purple Rain . . . of frogs!

If it is big bag of jelly, then does one cook it in its skin, or simply use it as a flavouring?
xoxoxoBruce • Jun 19, 2007 8:17 pm
I wouldn't even remotely consider that in the edible column. Brrrrr.

That was my first thought.

Not in this thread, I mean, ever. I was born and I thought "It looks a bit like the shell-less turtle...." but it took me years to be able to express that.

Perhaps you cut it open and spread it on toast?

If Bernard Manning ever gets re-incarnated, odds-on he'll end up as one of these.

I only found out he was dead today.
I'm not glad, because he was a human being with a family after all (unlike Thatcher). But I'm not sorry.

With apologies to Gelett Burgess:

I never saw a purple frog.
I never hope to see one.
But I can tell you anyhow,
I'd rather see than be one.
