June 11, 2007: Iridium flares over church

It's the Monday Neatorama collaboration image!

And what an image. This was the Earth Picture of the Day yesterday. And IotD has actually covered this phenomenon before.

The two diagonal flares you see are Iridium satellites, reflecting sunlight back to the Earth from their low orbit. Our previous IotD showed these same kinds of flares, but the reason this shot is so much more incredibly impressive is that the photographer actually calculated where and when to take the shot, anticipating the flares and how to shoot them against an interesting foreground.

Be sure to visit our friends at Neatorama for more neato stuff all the time!

Welcome to the Cellar, Fa-.:D
That picture was incredibly difficult to calculate and capture. Great job.

I think that particular wave crested long ago, dude. You might consider using them as insulation in your end of the world bunker, though.

I think I'll use them as smallpox vectors against the post-apocalyptic raggamuffins.

Let's see, if it's two shooting stars we'll need six wise men.
