June 6, 2007: Eastern pollution two-fer

xoB finds both these wire service images which highlight remarkable pollution problems in the East. First, above, these guys are collecting plastic for recycling, out of the rest of the crap in the Citarum River in Indonesia. The official cap notes that this river is a source of clean drinking water for many cities in Java island. Well, probably not *clean* drinking water...

And this is a pond near Wuhan, China; they say 275,000 pounds of fish died in three days due to water pollution.

And I feel bad when I accidentally toss a soda can in the regular trash can and not the recyclable(sp)... Is this in the cards for Italy?....

That Wuhan lake is actually being ravaged by a killer algae... They're diverting part of the Yangtze river to clean it out.

Color me repulsed.

It is true that more heavily industrialized and richer actually means cleaner.

In a few weeks, those fish will be showing up in a grocery store near you.

I hope that guy in the top pic doesn't throw his cigarette butt in the river! Give a hoot...don't pollute.

Ah ^(^%%$*&$ They have the gall - THE GALL!! to blame that on The Algae. Sheesh! Yeah, the algae that bloomed due to the gross pollution.

The clean water comes in the bottles :D

BTW Why do they use boats? A cart would move around on these "waters" and would hold more bottles/fish than a boat. - Or one of those Eastern rickshaws which we see on IotD now and then carrying vast loads.
