Would you ever post the contents of a private message?

Spexxvet • May 29, 2007 12:52 pm
If someone PMed you, would you post the message, or convey the information of the PM to the rest of the board?
theotherguy • May 29, 2007 12:55 pm
No. Unless both parties were not opposed to it and it was relevant for the rest of the forum.
Cloud • May 29, 2007 12:59 pm
Would I EVER?

Ever is a long time, so yes, I would if I thought it was appropriate.
Trilby • May 29, 2007 1:04 pm
Only with permission.
Flint • May 29, 2007 1:06 pm
Only if I was Spexx, and the PM was the one that prompted me to start this thread.
Griff • May 29, 2007 2:03 pm
If I got an abusive PM I just might, although first I'd probably share it with UT or a moderator to see if we need to start ban proceedings.
Beestie • May 29, 2007 2:30 pm
Never without the PMers consent.

In cases of personal safety or in matters with legal implications I would point it out to UT but I can't think of any reason to ever post it publicly.

Note to self: never PM Cloud with private info. :D
Shawnee123 • May 29, 2007 2:37 pm
I would not post, or divulge the contents of, or otherwise parade another's PM to me unless the PMer told me to or said it was OK. That holds true whether it was a nice PM, a mean PM, an abusive PM, a slammin' PM...whatever.

But I know there are those who don't live by that credo, which is equivalent to telling Miss McGillacuddy that Mark is chewing gum in class, only worse.

lizzymahoney • May 29, 2007 3:00 pm
Nope. There are probably some circumstances where I would with permission of the author, but generally I wouldn't even paraphrase a private communication on a board.
Flint • May 29, 2007 3:03 pm
Probably some of the most boringest posts I have ever seen on the internet are where somebody goes "so-and-so is abusing me and they should be banned" and posts a big string of PMs they supposedly got from someone. Snooozefest. That might be funnier on this site, though.

If you read something into it, that is you, deal with it.
DucksNuts • May 29, 2007 7:21 pm
Nah, its in Private for a reason :)

Would you ever relay what someone said to you via PM to another party via PM? :p
monster • May 29, 2007 9:28 pm
If the PM was abusive and I thought it would be beneficial to all to share or be the only way to get it stopped, I might. But mostly I ignore anything unpleasant. I would never reveal personal details given in a PM, and go the moderator route first, but I think it's a form of bullying to be abusive in a PM. If you believe it's OK to say what you want to say, say it in public. Don't hide behind closed doors. And when people try to do that, then it's OK to rat them out if that appears to be a positive way forward

/gospel according to St. monster.
TheMercenary • May 29, 2007 10:41 pm
Hell yea, I would and have. But only in the cases where people have lied on the general board and then pm'd something different. I don't like people who play all nicey and then pm something where they are attempting to spank you verbally.

I got the idea there was a lot of that nonsense back when Mar*ch*o was on the board.
Hime • May 30, 2007 10:54 am
The example that glatt posted looked like a pretty obvious troll to me, so I might've posted it in that case, because, well, who cares about trolls?

In general, though, I wouldn't, unless I had the person's permission, and even then only if it was something that wasn't inherently private in nature -- like if I was just chatting with a friend through PMs and they happened to say something funny about, say, Pirates of the Caribbean, I might ask if I could share it with the rest of the class. If they had something funny to say about, say, TheMercenary*, though, that would be a bad thing to post.

On one forum where I used to post, we had some controversy over this issue. Someone got a PM from another user saying that he was using his presence on the forum to gather quotes and examples for an "expose" he was planning to write about the depravity and excesses of liberals on the internet. The person who received the PM posted it without saying who the author was, on the theory that we should know that our words might be taken out of context. I'm not sure if she did the right thing or not, but I guess I'd lean towards yes -- the person who claimed to be writing the book was being a troll.

*nothing personal, dude.

I'm guessing you've never heard of the policy of praising in public and punishing in private, neh? You strike me much more strongly as a public humiliator, for effect.

I sent someone a PM the other day asking why they've decided to antagonise me and they've yet to respond to it. I'm thinking about posting the contents of my pm here in the hope of getting some sense out of the situation.

Clodfobble • Jun 9, 2007 10:41 am
[Dr. Phil]You don't want "some sense out of the situation", you want validation. You don't really think anyone will be able to make sense out of an antagonizer's behavior based on how you asked them about their behavior. You just want everyone to see what a good effort you're making to be friendly, and take your side of things. Everyone's posts already speak for themselves. So quit contributing to the negativity by repeatedly dredging it up.[/Dr. Phil]
Aliantha • Jun 9, 2007 6:19 pm
I have not 'repeatedly brought it up', and I don't require validation (this is definitely not the place I'd come for if that were so), but thanks for your thoughts Dr Phil.

How would you know? I mean, what if you send a very personal PM, and that person forwards it to others...you'd never know, unless the party of the second part called you out on it. Even in the Cellar you have to learn to trust, no easy task. I guess it's just like IRL, there are people who can't wait to spread the latest gossip, and those who really do keep secrets in a vault. All we can do is hope we've trusted the right people. I'm not talking about dissin' PMs per se, just anything you share with a friend that maybe you don't want to be public knowledge. I think I've been lucky in the friends I've found here.

just the fact that a pm is private...technologically...does not mean that it is private information. you can't send someone a PM out of the blue and just assume that they will behave as though they were your psychiatrist or attorney. there is no pmee/pmer confidentiality rule in place.

Establishing a trust with someone and being betrayed is one thing....but being exposed in your attempts to whisper down the lane is another altogether.

oh..i see you're a moron then? yes, i'm using your own favorite words against you.

what part of it was apologetic?

i came a cross this thread, re read it, got re-mad, and wanted to point out that unless you ask someone to treat the contents of a pm as private (..... and get their assurance that they will do so....) ahead of time....then you should have no expectation that they treat it confidentially.
rkzenrage • Sep 17, 2007 9:57 pm
Riiiiigggght.. it would be CRAZY for someone to think you would NOT treat a PRIVATEmessage as something else.
LOL!!!
Yeah, I'm the moron. You run with that.
lumberjim • Sep 17, 2007 10:09 pm
it's called a PRIVATEmessage because it is sent to one person and and not posted on a bulletin board. As I said, confidentiality should not be assumed. If you tell someone something and they repeat it, or convey your message to other people, theres no foul. UNLESS you ask them to hold it private. In some cases, the information shared is inherently private. But it aint automatic. IOW, if you sent me a PM saying that you were sexually attracted to Spexxvet, but were afraid to say it to him....I wouldn't post that. But if you mentioned that you thought he looked hawt in his new sweat suit, I might make reference to that if the topic came up.

So now if you want every one of your PM's to be private, you probably need to put a disclaimer at the bottom like they put on some company emails. You know..."the contents of this message are meant for the recipient and no one else. The contents of this message are confidential blah blah blah..."

Is that right?

I don't PM much, but when I do, it's because I want to say something specifically to a single person. I make no assumptions about them keeping it private from the rest of the board.

As if I was at a party (just can't get away from this analogy) and was talking quietly in a corner with someone. If I didn't want them to repeat what I was about to say, then I wouldn't say it in the first place.

That being said, I wouldn't blab to any third parties about what I have been chatting with a person. I figure, if they wanted that third person to know, they'd tell them themselves. It's not my place to do so. There are a few exceptions, like if I am honestly worried about the well being of someone.

How about if the someone took you into a seperate room, with the sign "this room is for private communications" over the door. You know, the one down the hall, next to the bathroom. Would you then keep your conversation confidential?

Like I said, I would keep any conversation to myself. As for expecting the other person to keep it between us, I could say "This stays between us" till I'm blue in the face and have a signed contract fron the other person, but have learned enough times that it never does anyway...so if I don't want it leaked, I keep my mouth shut.

Shawnee123 • Sep 18, 2007 2:08 pm
It's an obscure reference that I feel under no obligation to explain. A wise man once told the masses that people either get the joke or they don't; explaining it is moot.

Why do you ask, twice???????

Methinks you construed it as something to do with you, or you wouldn't ask. But rest assured, it has nothing to do with you. Believe it or not, not everything in the world, not even the Cellar, is about you.

Let's see...27 or 29 people here are cutting each other to pieces, crying, being paranoid, poking each other's eyes out, and whining. And you get crazy from that little exchange? Ohhhhhhhhhhkaayyyyyyy...

Screenplay:

Poster # 1: quotes a line from a movie
Poster # 2: what does that mean
Poster # 1: it's a quote from a movie
Poster # 2: well, what's it mean?
Poster # 1: it doesn't really mean anything. why do you ask? (slightly concerned about seeming suspicion)
Poster # 2: I asked because I am interested to know what it means.
Poster # 1: It's not about you.

Cast extras: omg, they've all gone crazy, catfight...etc and so on.

That was a meltdown? Um, er, eh, who isn't letting it go?

I don't expect you, or your husband, to get any of my jokes. Despite your 38000 on the ACT, I've not been impressed with your stellar intelligence.

Just keep doing your one trick, pony. When you stray from that you get lost, confused, and paranoid.

(total paranoid freak who thinks she should be the center of everyone's thoughts beginning to get suspicious that poster #2 might be attacking her when in fact she just didn't get the joke.)

Laughable. Again, I say you have NEVER been interested in any thing I've said before (even a few lame attempts to be nice to you) until you think it has something remotely to do with you.

I think I should be the center of everyone's thoughts? When someone else gets the tiniest bit of attention you start bumping your ass shots, or posting your pasty-looking pasties. As far as lazy, that's even funnier...I have no problem typing this; I must have felt more like you're not worth the effort. So, Lazy for Labrat.

Now, go lay down.

In ancient Greece (469 - 399 BC) Socrates was widely lauded for his wisdom.

One day the great philosopher came upon an acquaintance who ran up to him excitedly and said, Socrates, do you know what I just heard about one of your students?"

"Wait a moment," Socrates replied. "Before you tell me I'd like you to pass a little test. It's called the Triple Filter Test."

"Triple filter?"

"That's right," Socrates continued. "Before you talk to me about my student let's take a moment to filter what you're going to say. The first filter is truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?"

"No," the man said, "actually I just heard about it and..."

"All right," said Socrates. "So you don't really know if it's true or not.

Now let's try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my student something good?"

"No, on the contrary..."

"So," Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about him, even though you're not certain it's true?"

The man shrugged, a little embarrassed.

Socrates continued. "You may still pass the test though, because there is a third filter - the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my student going to be useful to me?"

"No, not really"

Well," concluded Socrates, "if what you want to tell me is neither True nor Good nor even Useful, why tell it to me at all?"

The man was defeated and ashamed.

This is the reason Socrates was a great philosopher and held in such high esteem.

It also explains why he never found out that Plato was banging his wife.

lj...I'm not in a good state o' mind right now, and I have nothing against you...but you said someone referred to 'the word on the street' today.....made me think they'd been chatting back and forth in pm about someone else." and I am contending that whoever you are talking about it has nothing to do with me, and it's no secret I used the phrase word on the street. How any of it relates to you I haven't a clue. So your PM was not related to me.

i was thinking that you were referring to saying what you said about labrat and things of that nature via pm with whoever comprises 'the word on the street'. I think that talking about someone behind their back is one thing....and i wont say that i never do it....but to then refer to it publicly as a common opinion held by ...?who? ....the people in the street? is kinda dirty pool.

i dont have anything against you either. i was trying to say that pm's that attempt to steer or influence behind the scene are not ok with me.

No, I said I am not the only one who feels that way. So your twist is to either 1) call me out as lying or 2) make me rat (get it?) on those I know who feel the same.

I reiterate that I don't do things from behind the scenes. I have conversations about...omg...them, and me and MY life and THEIR life.

Though I will concede that it shouldn't have been brought up, still, from the king of dirty pool that's quite a compliment.

Without entering the debate on either side, I know I have seen comments posted by users other than Shawnee voicing (to an extent) the opinion she has.

If anyone wanted to find them they could - I'd like to think no-one would be interested in compiling a dossier of negative comments about any other poster.
