Gun thread must die!

monster • May 27, 2007 6:42 pm
I've tried my best to kill it. I failed. Or at least bung it in the political ramblings forum or nothingland. But it's just name-calling circles now. not exactly the first thing you want newbs to come across. Well jmho anyway.
jinx • May 27, 2007 8:21 pm
Sometimes people need to argue - what's so wrong about that? It's cathartic. If you don't like it.. blah blah blah...

I'm not trying to be shitty to you specifically monster, but sometimes the argument is interesting. What is never interesting is all the people chiming in to say stop it and tell everyone how immature they are.
:2cents:
DucksNuts • May 27, 2007 8:51 pm
Let 'em go at it I reckon.

I skim read them or dont bother at all...its that simple.

If newbies read them and judge the whole of the cellar on those kinda threads, they arent going to want to hang around long anyways.

Any forum worth a pinch of shit has volatile topic threads, I like them because it shows different sides of the *characters* I have come to know and love :) its more of a whole picture.

Damn Brits and their censorship.

I'm kidding, Monster.
Hey, I don't complain about the fru fru threads.
Aliantha • May 27, 2007 9:29 pm
You'll be pleased to know there's been a significant thread drift today. :) I'm sure it'll be back on topic before long though.

Fair enough. :)

I think it is excellent advice, don't like it, don't go in the thread... it is very simple.

People are always going into threads an leaving stupid comments like, In The Coffee Thread... "I don't drink coffee". It takes a real genius to do that. A real contribution.
Aliantha • May 28, 2007 12:21 am
I think we should all just stop posting new threads. That should solve the problem. :)
Ibby • May 28, 2007 12:29 am
My only question is, what is it about guns that make perfectly reasonable people into complete ASSholes?

A lot of us do similar--including you and me. Jeez, not everything has to be a genius contribution. The Cellar would become The Graveyard.

I think it's because it's a very polarizing issue, like abortion and immigration. A lot of folks feel very strongly either way. But no one is ever convinced to change their minds.
rkzenrage • May 28, 2007 12:35 am
I've been in the room when people have changed their mind. I have changed my mind on both abortion and the death penalty.
bluecuracao • May 28, 2007 12:38 am
So, there's a chance I might change your mind about illegal immigrants? ;)
rkzenrage • May 28, 2007 12:43 am
Sure, as long as it is rational. You are going to have a hard time convincing me that there is a rational reason to overturn our immigration laws, since they are some of the most liberal and easy to navigate in the world. That, and I feel that it is crazy to say that it is fair to reward people for harming the system and people's chances who are trying to get into this nation legally.
You don't reward people for cutting in front of you in line anywhere else... it would be silly to here where people's lives are one the line and it is criminals doing it... but you are free to show me a rationality for it.
bluecuracao • May 28, 2007 1:40 am

What is the point?

We're all entitled to our opinions on threads and the tone of the Cellar. Just look at how quickly people who post in txtspk are told that we don't like it here.

Differing public opinion makes this place what it is. I found out I was in the minority when I complained. Good. I needed to know that, I'm over myself now. You?

Want to censor my opinion?
Flint • May 28, 2007 5:03 pm
When I don't like a thread, I punch my computer monitor. Well, not the actual monitor, but a plexiglass safety panel I installed in front of the monitor to protect it from whatever it is that keeps making them not work anymore.

I swear to God, if I have to punch one more broken monitor I am gonna seriously punch something.

I become a complete asshole in a gun thread because I treat people as they treat me. In the “do you own a gun?” thread, Clodfobble and I had a civil discussion – we disagreed without name-calling or insults. I acknowledged that she was right and I was wrong when she pointed out that I would try to change the minds of the jungle tribe that sacrifices children. We didn’t change each other’s minds, but we remained civil. I think that most pro-gunners view anti-gun people as being weak – they think we’ll run away from a nasty attack. I won’t.

People who would use a handgun on another human being are inherently aggressive. They have to be, since the intention of having a handgun is, at its most extreme conclusion, to kill someone who threatens them, someone near them, or their stuff. They also have to be inherently paranoid, because they live their lives with the anticipation that something bad will happen to them. So why do they turn into Assholes? Because they don’t want to admit that they’re scared, or that they would actually take someone’s life. Beyond those reasons, it’s hard to defend having a handgun. And when their other rationalizations fail, they resort to what they naturally do – they shoot the opposition with names, instead of bullets. They insult, belittle and ridicule their opponents, like pointing a handgun at them. When you are pointing a handgun at someone, you don’t have to talk anything out, do you?

Most handgun-owning Cellarites justify owning a handgun by saying they need it to protect themselves, and their stuff, in their home. Some have other reasons, some won’t state their reasons, but predominately, that’s the justification. A handgun is not the most effective way to protect a home or stuff. [Someone] scoffed at floodlights and bars on the windows, but when they’re used with alarms and good locks, they will keep her safer from a potential intruder than having a handgun inside the house. If you don’t secure your perimeter, you could be woken out of a sound sleep being poked with the barrel of a gun. How would your handgun help in that situation? If you answer your door, and the intruder pushes through and beats your brains in as you try to get to your handgun, how did it help? If you answer the door with your handgun in your hand, loaded, with the safety off, or sleep with it in the same condition, under your pillow, bad things can happen. It would be easy to accidentally discharge the weapon, or for a child to get hold of it, with all the negative consequences of that, or for the intruder to get possession of it and use it on the owner or the owner’s family.

If you dislike me, ignore me, just don't respond to my posts. There is no call for insulting me, or anyone else, for no reason. It is just a discussion, nothing more.
Then you go off and apologize to everyone except me, the person who never insulted you, now you act like you had a reason for freaking out? Cute.

Many people own handguns to target practice, as collectibles, as art, as heirlooms... you make assumptions.
Handguns are not perfect, but they are better than not having one. People keep saying it, you keep choosing not to read it.
But, if you believe all of that, cool... don't buy one.

Bullshit. You just made six blanket accusations of everyone that owns a handgun. Six condemnations, of millions of people, that you pulled out of your ass. Six opinions that you try to pass off as facts, with nothing to remotely back it up. That makes you a liar.

Thread bombing is not the same as thread killing.

I know the rant was aggressive. I never said I wasn't aggressive.

It takes an aggressive nature to prepare yourself to shoot somebody - even if it's in self defense.

As far as not caring what side it's from - you need to take a look at that statement a little more closely. There was enough "irony" in the gun thread from the pro-gun side for you to jump in any time, but I didn't see you there. CHeck in right now, there's some tasteful taunting going on.

Use Quick Release Devices On Barred Windows and Doors
Windows and doors with security bars should have quick release devices to allow them to be opened immediately in an emergency. These devices operate from inside and allow the bars to be opened for emergency escape without compromising the security of your home. The quick release devices should be easy to open without the use of a key, detailed knowledge or great physical effort. Release devices vary by region and manufacturer. Contact your local fire department on a non-emergency number for information on approved release devices available in your area.

That they were not hot? That's as close to a fact as any judgment on looks can be.
That thread bombs are not the same as spamming? No, because a thread bomb is a very specific kind of image meant as a joke but also to constructively either make a point or advance the thread. Your spam did none of those things.
Come on Teen... Just cause you didn't think it wasn't funny is really not important. They were all very specific kinds of images meant to be a joke. It made you angry and gave you teen angst. Big deal.

Oh yes, boo hoo, I'm all angsty cause a troll posted ugly people in my thread.

You give yourself far too much credit, old man.

Ok, why the big whine and begging behavior to UT?
Ibby • May 30, 2007 9:18 pm
Because I dont like trolls, simple as that.

I think I need a holiday from this place.

All these arguments are becomming very circular aren't they?
xoxoxoBruce • May 31, 2007 5:11 am
Same old, same old, Ali. They don't like each other.

Merc posted a picture to poke the thread, it worked. I even though it was funny. But then he had to do it again....heavy handed. The third time...asshat. Too amused by his own cleverness to see straight(no pun).

Of course Ibram was off the wall on the first one because it was "his" thread, even though it isn't "his" thread. From there on he's bat-shit nuts because each picture is a personal assault, aimed at ruining his Cellar experience, questioning the validity of his very existence on earth. Ho hum.

And the beat goes on.

On the first post he did call him gay. He does always have to bring that up, it does make it personal.
xoxoxoBruce • May 31, 2007 11:19 pm
Oh, I thought, "HA! gay.", was directed at the thread.
Aliantha • Jun 1, 2007 2:09 am
Gay shmay...who cares. Ibram is quite open about his preferences at this point in time. I don't really think that's worth worrying about, especially since every time Merc says it, it reflects far more on him than Ibram. Maybe neither of them have noticed that.

I'll keep the rest of my thoughts about Merc to myself today. :)

This is correct.
rkzenrage • Jun 1, 2007 4:38 pm
The thread, if I am correct was for anyone who wanted to post attractive men... their reasons being their own.
Women posting them are hardly gay. Merc has been stalking him with his homophobia since he has shown-up.
I don't understand why it is so calmly overlooked.
I sure hope if someone who is racist does this later they are not chased out of here again like they have been in the past.
lumberjim • Jun 1, 2007 5:45 pm
yeah, and add fatty bashing to the list and he's a real sociopath. good thing we're not all that sensitive.

oh, and what do you think the chances are that, in his heart of hearts, he's NOT a racist? c'mon.

there aren't any fat, gay minoritites on here are there?
