Put Bonnie plants tomatoes and basil in today; last week carrots and brussels sprouts (new!) in as seed. Also an eggplant.

We did not remove the last bits of thyme and sage out there, and lo and behold, it came back this year with no prompting.

I need to get one of them plastic owls... the rabbits are eating my cauliflowers!!
Shawnee123 • May 14, 2007 1:26 pm
My dad made a version of this out of wood. They look really nice. My brothers are using them; I don't have enough sunny spot and don't like tomatos, but it's a neat idea.

I have a plastic owl in my office. He used to be out in the atrium to keep the birds out. He didn't work. Now he has a college hat on and I named him Moltimer.

How in the world does it work?

You plant the plants in the 'base' (top thing) like a normal planter to get them started, then once they have flowers, flip the whole thing upside down and put into the base?

How do you water the plants?

I am totally confused.:yelsick:
Shawnee123 • May 14, 2007 1:51 pm
I think you put the small tomato plants through holes in the top base thingy. The tomatos will then vine down. You can plant other plants on the top part of the dirt so it looks pretty. Then you just water the dirt. I think. I know dad drilled holes in the top base thingy. :)

My Mother grows tomatos in hanging pots along the edge of the carport. They do great, except where the vines go over the edge of the pot, as the vines get heavier the point at the pot edge gets pretty strained.
Is it high enough so critters can't nibble the hanging fruit?

I guess it's higher than ground planted tomatoes. :o Do squirrels eat tomatoes? They can get into just about anything!
Cloud • May 14, 2007 4:17 pm
That is really terrific, and you are really lucky, BusterB! Good luck with it!

No, but the little rat assholes will pull, take a bite and throw down. For sure your 1st of season you've been watching.

Thxs Cloud. Lets see about 8 bucks for a 50lb sack of 8-8-8- fertilizer, almost 22 bucks for an eight oz. bottle of Post. + water bill and my labor. Hell I'm doing great.

I'd like to grow some vegies and herbs indoors. Too hot and windy here on my porchony to grow stuff.
busterb • May 14, 2007 11:31 pm

TheMercenary • Jun 10, 2007 9:54 pm
We are already harvesting tomatos, Jalepeno peppers, Cowhorn peppers, and Sweet yellow peppers. We have basil and cilantro as well but the cilantro has not done well. All grown in 5 gallon pots.

Come on down. Pick all you want free. I try to freeze about 20qts a year. Yeah I know I shouldn't be eating the pies and bb's and ice cream.
Clodfobble • Jun 10, 2007 10:46 pm
Do you ever eat them straight out of the freezer, buster? I am a frozen blueberry addict. I always have at least one package in there to snack on.
busterb • Jun 10, 2007 11:01 pm
Naw. I just make pies or put in blender w/sugar and pour over ice cream. In a squirt bottle. Also I make a great lemon blueberrie pound cake or cook it in the small bunt? pans.
xoxoxoBruce • Jun 11, 2007 4:50 am
Blueberries are great for an overtaxed urinary system.

My parents (with one afternoon of help from my brother and I, and a weekend of help from my sister) picked, pitted, and preserved well over 100 pounds of cherries over the past three weeks. Next week it's blackberries.

Beautiful gardens, Guys!

My wife has decided that for veggies, we'll just frequent the local farmer's market, and has spent her time and energy on all flowers in her garden for th last couple of years. If you don't count a few berry bushes in between. I'd love to show some of her pictures (her other hobby)if ya'll would like to see!

Now that's a silly question... stand and deliver.
