Illegal Handguns

Spexxvet • May 8, 2007 12:50 pm
Michael Nutter, candidate for mayor of Philadelphia, is proposing on-the-spot searches for illegal handguns. From Here:

Proven tactics such as stop and frisk and aggressively enforcing arrest warrants will help to get illegal guns off the street and also the people who are more inclined to use them.

Is this something gun advocates would support?

Yeah! Frisk everybody. Make checkpoints on all streets too. And cameras. Lots of cameras. Might as well issue papers to everyone too, you know, to keep track of them. Actually, tattoos would be better, since you can't transfer them. Use special ink to cut down on forgery.

We'll be safe.

Make the jews wear yellow stars and the gays wear pink triangles. How about something for illegal aliens.

Proposing uncontitutional things that sound tough is a political trick to get elected and not actually have to change anything or spend any money. "Well I tried but the stupid courts held me back! But I'm still the toughest on crime ever!!!"

Similarly, see flag burning amendment and gay marriage amendment. Nothing changed except perceptions. It's fake leadership.

On balance, no. Society-wide, the best rebuttal to an illegally carried gun is one or more legally carried ones. It suppresses crime and follows the Constitution's provisions for individual rights.

Nor does the citizen necessarily have to jump through legal hoops to carry. Case in point: Vermont, where there is no permit of any sort required for concealed carry. Even with their population density increasing, what with all the immigrants from Massachusetts, can you recall all those massacres of Vermonters in bars, parks, ball games, and traffic accidents?

Vermont shows us the proper use of arms is quite independent of any permitting process.

Which is why, as everyone knows, Vermont is the coolest state ever - and definitely the most liberal.

It's a nice place to visit, but....

but... to cold in the winter. After being stationed in Hawaii for 3 years we vowed we would never live where we had to shovel snow again.

Darn good syrup, though.

I actually like snow. Maybe I should move up north till I get sick of it. :right:
Rexmons • May 17, 2007 12:53 pm
if only there was some kind of law preventing illegal search or seizure.

Illegal? No.

Bizzare? Oh yeah.
Illinois issues gun permit to 10-month-old boy

CHICAGO (AP) - Bubba Ludwig can't walk, talk or open the refrigerator door - but he does have his very own Illinois gun permit.

The 10-month-old, whose given name is Howard David Ludwig, was issued a firearm owner's identification card after his father, Howard Ludwig, paid the $5 fee and filled out the application, not expecting to actually get one.

The card lists the baby's height (2 feet, 3 inches), weight (20 pounds) and has a scribble where the signature should be.

Goo.
rkzenrage • May 17, 2007 4:59 pm
You have to ask to own a gun in that state?
xoxoxoBruce • May 17, 2007 8:58 pm
He can have a permit but he can't buy a gun or ammo. All they've done is register a shotgun, his grandfather bought, in his name. It won't have to be in the will because he already owns it, even though he can't use it for many years to come.
TheMercenary • May 18, 2007 9:02 pm
Makes sense. Staying within the idiotic laws of the state. Would hate to see the father or grand father going to jail for some idiotic gun grabber trying to twist the law.
Urbane Guerrilla • May 20, 2007 2:36 am
Rkzen, yes you do. It's among Illinois' most regrettable laws, and does not make for a crime-free or genocide-resistant state. Remember Morton Grove is in Illinois.
Urbane Guerrilla • Jun 5, 2007 11:33 am
The ramrod for a failed gun buyup program in Los Angeles gets arrested for gunrunning. Cute, ain't it?

And the guy who got him city funds has lost his job over it.
