The All American Job

lumberjim • May 8, 2007 12:23 am
What would you say is the most American job?
Cloud • May 8, 2007 12:35 am
President.
rkzenrage • May 8, 2007 2:04 am
I don't think there is one, that is what makes us America; but farmer or cowboy are close. Not just because I've done them. I have done others. Because of what it takes mentally and physically to do those jobs & what they produce.

I haven't seen it in years, myself, and it came up in conversation yesterday. Awesome classic.

I think I'm leaning towards Farmer. But that might just be the imagery we get from TV speaking.....I mean, there are farmers in every country...nothing particularly American about that. jinx offered Lawyer last night......but her instant answer was fireman. How about police officer or soldier?
glatt • May 8, 2007 2:13 pm
All countries have those basic jobs: Cop, fireman, soldier, farmer. Nothing American about them at all. Look at Nazi propaganda sometime. Some strong themes there.

Americans invented fast food. Fast food restaurant manager all the way, baby.

My votes are for cheerleader and infomercial host. Nobody else has those and they are SO American :D

Are we counting copycat nations? Hmm Japanese cheerleaders. In Japan, self promotion is not the social norm. it's generally a collectivist society isn't it? Somehow the image doesn't fit. But i'm sure they have them somewhere. You find little girls in cheerleader costumes in England too, and may even find the odd professional squad. But they're just copying the cool Americans. I'm sure they're everywhere, but see a picture of a cheerleader and you think "America".

Interesting -you're most likely to get an immigrant visa if you're an engineer, so you can't have enough of them! that's how we ended up here....

Yeah. Whether it's fair or not, those of the technical ilk seem to have less difficulty. Leeds and Woodchester are inundated with American engineers working ex-pat. If it weren't for the roundabouts, I'd be there now.

Working in the steel mills.

Tangent.
Ever wake up for work, school, whatever you have to do, go sit at the computer, access the cellar, youtube, facebook, yahoo news and then it's 30 minutes before you have to be there or leave to get to your destination on time? You haven't showered, put on clothes, eaten breakfast or brushed your teeth. Ever rationalize skipping all those to stay on the PC longer, then rationalize skipping your whole objective for the day? Gosh it's such a defeated feeling. But the internet is so addicting.
