Ice cream flavor

You like chocolate ice cream, and hate vanilla ice cream. You spouse likes vanilla ice cream, and hates chocolate ice cream.

Is your spouse:

stupid

foolish

just has different taste opinions than you
Undertoad • Apr 26, 2007 11:08 pm
Is there some sort of... personal reason for this kind of question?
bluecuracao • Apr 26, 2007 11:08 pm
I don't hate vanilla...I just prefer chocolate. ;)
Ibby • Apr 26, 2007 11:12 pm
Stupid. Everyone knows chocolate is the best.
freshnesschronic • Apr 26, 2007 11:13 pm
I'm down for both. But vanilla with chocolate topping, say, syrup? Oh yeah.

Nonsense. This is only about ice cream.

Chocolate. Ah, chocolate! Lethal, bold desire. There is nothing stopping you from enjoying the flavor, the excitement, but even adding a protective coating of Nestle's chocolate Shell isn't enough to get one to ignore that the ice cream probably contains too many nuts for your liking. Vanilla is a much safer choice and is clearly a favorite as well, but its flavor is easily overtaken by any ingredient imposed upon it -- the mere addition of a single, soft maraschino cherry completely overpowers it. Vanilla gives in, vanilla is weak. Now you know chocolate isn't good for you and who would want to be associated with those people, anyway? You know the kind. Vanilla is what gentle, sane people enjoy on a happy outing at the park. Families eat vanilla. Chocolate is what poor people from Detroit stock in their freezer...

Oh, well in that case...

I'm a vanilla snob. I have a hard time eating any vanilla other than Breyers all natural. It used to be just like home made ice cream, but Breyers was bought out by Unilever, and now they mix guar gum and crap like that in with it. It's still the best, but it's gone down a few notches.

I just discovered Breyers Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip. I think it might be a new flavor. They take their vanilla ice cream, and throw in some chocolate chips and then mix in some raspberry syrup. It's really amazing how good it is.
elSicomoro • Apr 27, 2007 10:30 am
Spexx, we see right through you. ;)

Everyone's tastes are different. I respect your right to like things that I don't. I might make fun of you for it in private, but I have no real problem with your preferences. :)
Clodfobble • Apr 27, 2007 11:42 am
If neither of you can appreciate more than a single flavor of ice cream, you are both Philistines.

Currently, in my freezer I have:

"Delta Blues" - vanilla ice cream with blueberries, blueberry syrup swirl, and little chunks of "pie crust"
Mint Chocolate Chip
Natural Bean Vanilla
Bunuelos 'n' Cream - Cinnamon ice cream with chunks of bunuelos and caramel swirl.

We go through ice cream pretty quickly around here.
LabRat • Apr 27, 2007 12:20 pm
Where did you find the delta blues??????????? OMG that sounds awesome!!

We only have store brand plain vanilla right now, bought to put on the apple crisp I made earlier in the week (that I finished this morning for breakfast ). I really dislike chocolate ice cream, but love milk chocolate in all it's various forms. Go figure.

Try good vanilla with dry hot chocolate mix on top (Swiss Miss or don't bother). :yum:
Clodfobble • Apr 27, 2007 12:24 pm
It's a new seasonal flavor by Blue Bell (I don't know if you get them in the midwest or not, I think they're a primarily Southern company). It'll probably only be here for awhile, they do a lot of rotation. I keep hoping they'll bring back their cantaloupe seasonal flavor, that was the best ice cream I have ever had, period.

I was raised on the old-school vanilla Breyers. The stuff that they put out now? I can't eat it. I'm on a Ben & Jerry's kick...great ice cream.

If you try Ben & Jerry's Cinnamon Bun ice cream...you're going to need larger pants soon. I can't get enough of the stuff...too bad it only comes in pints.

Spexx, you need to consider either buying neopolitan and letting the strawberry die a quiet death by freezer burn, or get vanilla and a large bottle of really good chocolate syrup for your personal use. Or better still, a bottle of Godiva Chocolate Liqueur.

Is that the Blue Bell (The Little Creamery) in Brenham, Texas, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and Sylacauga, Alabama?
If it is, I don't see Delta Blues..... damn it.

Yes, I said four Delta Blues. No, I don't want vanilla or chocolate.... what do you think I'm stupid? foolish?

Clodfobble • Apr 28, 2007 7:05 pm
That's the one, Bruce. Maybe we're in some sort of test market for it, I don't know. I've heard of/had all the other flavors on that list, so maybe the super-brand-new flavors don't get on it right away.

Edit: I don't see the awesome cantaloupe flavor anywhere on their website either. Heck, maybe for $90 I could figure out a way to ship some to you.

Ah ha!!

If you go to their "Extra Scoops" and then "Latest Contests" links:

We’re searching our 17 state region for unique and original flavors. We want consumers throughout the states of Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas to submit names of ice cream flavors suggestive of their own state and/or local dessert traditions....

Similar state and regionally-oriented ice cream flavors produced by Blue Bell over the years have included Mardi Gras, Key Lime Pie, Georgia Peach Cobbler, Mississippi Mud Pie, Southern Pecan Pie, and Cantaloupe ‘n Cream, to name a few.

I bet Delta Blues is a Mississippi-special flavor. Why we have it in Texas, I don't know.

Of course I believe everyone has a right to enjoy their own personal favourite, but I can't help feeling that Americans complicate their ice-creams too much. Not an allegorical statement - I've decided to take the question at face value ;)

Ben & Jerry's? Faugh. Always seems to have something in it that I don't like - usually some form of nuts or cake product. Or bananas, which everyone knows are the devil's favourite food.

Probably not fair of me to make it a US issue - I find Pret a Manger (Brit sandwich shop) does the same - cucumber in just about everything for example, and I can't bear the stuff. Even if I don't taste it at the time I burp up the flavour all evening.

My all time favourite would be a simple, plain, good quality vanilla. For fancy ice cream I'd have a Haagen Daaz Vanilla Chocolate Fudge (rich vanilla with seams of chocolate and fudge). And yes, I know they're American too :)

Years ago I remember an article about an ice cream shop up in New Hope that made some of their flavors from flowers. I don't remember if it was rose, jasmine, or something else.

I bought dried hibiscus flowers to mix with my loose teas at work. I think that would make an interesting ice cream.
Sundae • May 13, 2007 9:40 am
The winning chef on this weeks Great British Menu made elderflower ice cream. Quite fancied it actually.

Ingredients
For the elderflower ice cream
300ml/½ pint whole milk, preferably Channel Island
6 medium free-range egg yolks
100g/4oz caster sugar
300ml/½ pint Jersey or clotted cream, or a mixture of the two
200ml/7fl oz elderflower cordial
For the perry jelly and summer fruits
4 gelatine leaves
500ml/18fl oz perry (sparkling pear cider)
75g/2¾oz caster sugar
125g/5oz mixed berries, such as blueberries, raspberries and wild strawberries

Method
1. For the elderflower ice cream, bring the milk to the boil in a heavy-based saucepan, then remove from the heat. Whisk the egg yolks and sugar together in a bowl, pour in the milk and whisk well. Return to the pan and cook over a low heat for about five minutes, stirring constantly with a whisk. Do not boil. Remove from the heat and whisk in the cream and elderflower cordial. Leave to cool, then churn in an ice cream machine (according to manufacturer's instructions) until thickened. Decant into a clean container and place in the freezer.
2. For the perry jelly and summer fruits, immerse the gelatine leaves one at a time in a shallow bowl of cold water and leave for a minute or so until soft. Bring 100ml/3½fl oz of the perry to the boil in a medium saucepan, add the sugar and stir until dissolved. Drain and squeeze the gelatine leaves, then add to the hot perry and stir until melted. Remove from the heat, add the rest of the perry and stir well. Put the pan of jelly somewhere cool, but do not let it set.
3. Divide half the berries among four individual jelly moulds, or use one large mould. Pour in half of the cooled jelly. Chill for an hour or so to set, then top up with the rest of the berries and unset jelly. (This ensures the berries stay suspended and don't float to the top.) Return to the fridge to chill until set.
4. To serve, turn the jellies out onto plates and place a scoop of the elderflower ice cream in the middle of each one.
