Bible classes bill in Legislature

A Texas House bill that faced a hearing Tuesday would require school districts to offer high school-level courses on the Old and New Testaments.

Rep. Warren Chisum, R-Pampa, filed HB 1287 to make Texas the first state to require public schools to teach elective bible classes.

Chisum says the measure would allow students to investigate links between the Bible and the U.S. system of laws. But critics say such courses tend to promote religious views that discriminate against various other faiths.

Chisum also filed HB 167 to exempt bibles and holy books from being seized by creditors to pay off a debt.

"As the State of Texas continues to face challenges with the effects of the continued war on terror, drug clashes on the border, and lack of equal healthcare and education, it is necessary for each individual of this State to maintain their sense of security through their perspective faith or religion," the bill analysis reads.

Another bill by Chisum also seeks parental approval before a student can take a human sexuality class.

Texas does need to be it's own nation... and we need to tow it out to sea.

Funny, we feel the same way about Florida.

In Florida, doctors, school nurses or any health provider who finds that a girl under 16 is pregnant would have to tell the police, under a bill anti-abortion lawmakers are pushing in the Florida Legislature, reports the International Herald Tribune, 9 March 2007.

What's that you say? It takes more than introducing a bill to make it a law?

This is more of the kind of alienating absolutist crap that glatt was talking about.

I agree, religion is a cancer that needs to be routed out, exposed and removed from all corners of government; in all ways, shapes and forms. At any time, ever.
There should be penalties for trying to introduce bills that contain religious language, breeching the separation of church and state.

I sort of understand the mandatory reporting of a pregnancy; statutory rape may be the reason a girl is pregnant.

But mandatory bible classes? Oh please.

But seriously, the thing about Texas wasn't really necessary. There are some of us who don't push our religion down the throats of others, so it's a little extreme to say we need to be towed out to sea.

I think he means, work harder to SHUT UP the crazy folk. Stop voting for them, making them governor, etc.

Be more careful about statements concerning the purging of entire groups rkzen, especially references to cancers and such. I could make a far stronger argument for that comparison to be made to social liberals who advocate the removal of all darwinistic pressures from society, but that'd be a great way to kill credibility. A little less emotional rhetoric please.

The AU has a LOT of information on how to do this.

Religion in government and schools is a cancer. Clearly and absolutely.
I feel it is in life. That is my opinion.
However, the above statement is a fact.

Which of your above statements? I'll restate that all groups have uses and drawbacks, and some that I'm sure you hold dear to your heart have many serious drawbacks. Life isn't pretty, but most groups that set out to make our country more human have strayed and are now hamstringing it. Even when I argue against one of these (I'm purposefully not dropping names) I don't say it's a cancer that should be simply eradicated. You say that religion does no good at all in schools? Even the most staunch atheists here at university don't try to make such a blatantly overreaching tactic. You can, however, argue that the disadvantages outweigh the benefits in certain venues of public education. You have a problem with students getting pushy with students of other faiths, or with the formation of cliques? Then argue what you mean. If you truly would have students punished for displaying overt signs of religious belief or congregating with others of the same faith ,like a don't ask don't tell policy for religion, then you have left the realm of rationality I'm afraid.

religion is a good basis for a societal standpoint/basic guide lines. I think it is needed for those who don't know how to play nice with other kids, but like anything else it will be perverted by those wishing power over others and some sense of a greater purpose.. which for the record I believe there is a bigger purpose, what that is I don't know.. and I find it somewhat offensive that people would be so hubrariffic as to claim they know the mind of god (or goddess.. or whatever). to me the bulk of people use religion as a crutch and an excuse to love and hate other people and lifestyles that they don't agree with. some people however hold the true teachings of the prophets to heart.. and those people I envy.. anywhoo! for the most part keep your peanut butter out of my chocolate... and I'll do the same.. fair enough?
