April 11, 2007: Swan feeds carp

Nature gone wrong day two: the official cap says a black swan feeds carp at a wildlife park in Shenzhen, in south China's Guangdong province.

It's a nice IotD because it's colorful, but what makes this swan decide to feed fish instead of feeding itself? Maybe the bird has learned animal husbandry and is breeding these fish long-term for the finest of seafood dinners.

This is actually caused by a fairly common condition that forces the the Swan to regurgitate it's food into the fishes' mouths.

It's called Carp Pool Funnel Syndrome.

lol!!!

Here's a video of a baby duck feeding carp.

I wonder if the swan lost its babies, and feels compelled to continue its mothering instincts. But with fish? Why not with a cute panda, or something?

V. funny sheldon!

This isn't anything gone "wrong" or that strange. I've seen pics over the years of birds feeding koi or carp. It's simple mothering instinct. Birds are conditioned to drop food into any gaping, begging mouth. They will even feed people.

Why just last night a medium sized chicken fed 2 adults and one child, with enough left over for 1 more adult to have lunch today. :D

Maybe they are kissing.

Hahaha!!!!!

looks more like the swan is smelling them - maybe its trying to tell them they have B.O.

Then again, maybe he's a gynocologist.

(gonna get bitch slapped for the rest of my life for that one!)
littlenickyer • Apr 11, 2007 6:54 pm
I'm pretty sure that's the wrong end...

I was playing up the fishy smell angle.

(diggin' the grave deeper for myself)

I know. I can smell 'em.

I don't get why the swan doesn't eat the fish. Maybe it's not part of their diet, but birds eat fish no doubt. Plus those fish look delicious, in my opinion.
littlenickyer • Apr 11, 2007 7:27 pm
I'm pretty sure swans eat grasses and smaller fish - the carp might be too big
However, don't think this means you can feed them
They will bite your hand, and the males will get all pissed at you for 'hitting on their woman'
not a fond memory

Dude, if it weren't for the necessity of including the pic for context, I would *so* put this in the Hall of Fame.

Excellent!

Its fairly obvious that you bat for the other team....and just as well I am tipping!!

Carp taste like crap.
DucksNuts • Apr 12, 2007 5:37 am
They're alright bled and cooked in beer Ali.
Aliantha • Apr 12, 2007 5:44 am
the flesh is still sloppy and 'muddy' tasting though. As a food source, they're ok, but there's lots of other fish that tastes good without even trying. ;)

Once again, fame comes so close, and then...

I'd like to thank all the little people (Billy Barty, Herve Villachaise, Verne Troyer) for this honor! :D

Thanks Big!
