Avatars

TheMercenary • Apr 1, 2007 12:20 am
Why does this forum not use them? is it a bandwidth issue?
elSicomoro • Apr 1, 2007 12:26 am
I like them, but UT (and others) have argued that they make a board look like shit.

It's one of a small handful of "executive decisions" by me and I stand by it. Here, you are recognized for your words alone.
Elspode • Apr 1, 2007 12:52 pm
Well, your words and the odd nipple pic.
DanaC • Apr 1, 2007 1:54 pm
*nods* Yep.

Hear, hear, no sleazy stuff.
Aliantha • Apr 1, 2007 9:20 pm
Bruce, why are you using Kagen's signature?
Beestie • Apr 1, 2007 9:35 pm
Avatars. Not.
DucksNuts • Apr 1, 2007 9:57 pm
We dont need no stinking avatars!!

I dislike them too
Undertoad • Apr 1, 2007 10:10 pm
To go a step further with this, on other forums I follow, the avatar one-upsmanship is getting crazy - everyone wants theirs to stick out, so now there are more and more animations - it just gets worse.

Animations are the very worst thing you can have on a page you're trying to read. You're trying to figure out what's being said, and all the while there's a big area, an inch away from the words, moving and changing colors and trying to get your attention.

Couldn't agree more. Totally agree with both avatar and smilie policies. (Don't mind avatars, but it's too much work to draw the line between discrete signatures and garish infomercials -if it were my job where I mod, I'd go for the no avatar option too )

Plus pages with avatars take a long time for dial up users to load.

say what? My grandma was a dial-up user in the war. rationed minutes, constant fear of calls dropping. scary times. Do you still have outside dunnies? :p

Only in the very colonial parts of the country monster.

Ok, thanks for the replys.

Over at The Bosque, we use avatars, but nothing too extreme. I think my avatar of an arrested James Brown is the most "over-the-top."
wolf • Apr 2, 2007 11:06 am
You have had several over the top avatars, but the godfather of soul is the best of them.

You have a lot more control over the content though.

I keep pointing out this board as the ultimate bad example ... animated avatars AND huge blinky signatures.

NO.

Sometimes I know just what my post will be before even reading the thread.

Because he told me I should try, I'd like it.

AH I see. Well that's interesting then. Personally, I'm glad you're using something different now. As Ducks said, you came close to getting a couple of lewd PM's. ;)
xoxoxoBruce • Apr 2, 2007 7:00 pm
Whew, that was close. My old heart couldn't take that.
Cloud • Apr 4, 2007 12:08 am
the lack of avatars makes recognizing people and navigating threads harder. just my 2cents
xoxoxoBruce • Apr 4, 2007 12:15 am
But maybe they'll read with less partiality that way?
Sundae • Apr 4, 2007 7:33 am
I prefer not having avatars.
Like wearing uniform in school, it forces everyone to appear equal.
