Slow today

Undertoad • Mar 22, 2007 8:51 am
Things are crawling today because overnight the crystals IotD got Farked

http://forums.fark.com/cgi/fark/comments.pl?IDLink=2688251

They linked to the forum view, which kills us every time.

Up until that point, stumbleupon was finding it a lot.

In the long run I think it may become necessary to split the forums and the database across two different servers. In the short run I will try to point to less interesting IotDs. :D

Well, congratulations on getting Farked again UT.
Shawnee123 • Mar 22, 2007 10:08 am
What ees thees theeng you call Farked?

I'm glad it's not just me...thought IT was crackin' down.
Undertoad • Mar 22, 2007 11:37 am
Linked on the front page of fark.com, where we are currently seeing an average of one request per second for the crystals thread. This is crazy!
Beestie • Mar 22, 2007 12:30 pm
Send Drew the bill. He can afford it.

At least farkers have a really short attention span. Things will be okay tomorrow, or even as soon as later this evening.
Shawnee123 • Mar 22, 2007 1:16 pm
Where'd the "who's here" list go?

Shhhhh! We're hiding from Stranger Danger....
Undertoad • Mar 22, 2007 1:49 pm
It takes a bit more work for the server to generate that list, so I've temporarily disabled it.
Shawnee123 • Mar 22, 2007 2:15 pm
I see...good for you! This is painfully slow.

I guess the exposure is a good thing, though, eh?
BigV • Mar 22, 2007 2:17 pm
yust yoking... ;)
BigV • Mar 22, 2007 2:20 pm
btw, how does fark.com handle it? multiple copies? answering all requests from a cached copy? What can you do for redirection in such a case? Can you create a "hot seat" spot that's capable of withstanding such a load, even if that space can't accommodate the entire cellar? Like some kind of quarrantine, but not to block access, only to redirect access.... just thinkin out loud..
elSicomoro • Mar 22, 2007 2:22 pm
It seems like things have been slow in general here over the past few days. Of course, it may also be my DSL, but I don't seem to have any problems with other sites.
Undertoad • Mar 22, 2007 2:26 pm
We've also been getting beaten badly by StumbleUpon - in fact, right now it looks like more traffic from SU than from Fark. But we're also getting traffic from people linking to it because they found it interesting on Fark.
glatt • Mar 22, 2007 4:21 pm
I linked to it too, but I linked to the Snopes webpage so my worlds wouldn't collide.
Undertoad • Mar 22, 2007 4:49 pm
This is ridiculous.

The Cellar will be down tonight for maintenance... I'm going to split it between two servers.

We're burning Al Gore like juice now eh?

elSicomoro • Mar 22, 2007 5:18 pm
Hey...could this be why I'm getting two e-mails of the same reply?
Undertoad • Mar 22, 2007 5:22 pm
It could be... high load levels play havoc with email sending.

39,000 hits, compared to a typical 2,000 hits for a normal IotD!
Of course, the foam IotD was 400,000 hits.

perhaps we need a "What the Fark?" thread?
rkzenrage • Jun 12, 2007 2:51 am
S-not my fault.

Fark's not all bad -- it's what originally pointed me towards the Cellar, if memory serves.
xoxoxoBruce • Jun 17, 2007 12:13 am
No, Fark's not bad, but they sure can overwhelm a website.
