Proud Parent Brag Time
My 9yo daughter Hebe just came back from her first
Academic Games State Championships...
...and she came back a champion. :D
There are several games, at several levels, but the biggie is Basic Equations, and her team won. (They placed top 3 in most things) Each school team is split into mini teams of 5 to play, and the final ended up being three of our 6 mini-teams including hers. (About 150 mini-teams started.) They played, but that was just for fun as the whole team wins when a mini team wins. In fact all the kids win, it's a good thing. We nearly didn't send her (it's not cheap and competitive math us just so... weird.... especially as we send our kids to a school which educates in a non-competitive non-graded environment! ), but sending her again next year is almost a cert -her math has improved no end, her socials skills and confidence have gone through the roof. She rocks. :D
/note on the bizarre: -our team is a joint team of two schools -one is the most competitive, academic-score-oriented school in the district, filled with U of Mich professors' children, and the other is the hippy alternative school -also with it's fair share of U of M professors' children, alongside other society rebels. ;) The team coach is a teacher at the first school and parent the second. The kids got on great together, and were academically well matched. The two sets of parents didn't understand one another in any way, shape or form!
Basic equations? 2+2 is about as advanced as I get on those. Congratulations to your daughter!
Good job! She's embarking on a long, strange pathway though. Those math contests are a world of their own.
Thanks, both.
Are long strange pathways a bad thing?
she's also a swim and soccer jock, so there may be salvation in view! Swim championships are tomorrow.
Go little monster! Math competition?
especially as we send our kids to a school which educates in a non-competitive non-graded environment! Cool school.
Good thanks. But gruelling. Just recovering! Hebe aged up (i.e. moved up to the next age category, so she swam in the afternoon and the boys in the morning, so I was there all day -Beest performed child-changeover taxi duty).
All of them dropped loads of time (swam faster than their previous bests) and we got there to find that Hebe was seeded 18th out of 81 in the breaststroke! That's amazing given that she's one of the youngest in the two-year (9-10) age group. She came in 18th too. Hector got 12th (out of 23) in his IM, which is in the points (top 16) and he still has a year to go in his age group. Thor managed not to need to go to the bathroom right as the starter was giving them orders on the blocks! He dropped an incredible 20 seconds off his breast-stroke time, -from 1:26 to 1:04. He was DQd on a technicality, but who cares? they all did great. :D
I, on the other hand, am dead. In the morning, I was a time-writer -easy-peasy, sit at the poolside, check the pad time against the manual times, declare the official time. In the afternoon, I was a marshall -getting the kids from the staging area to the blocks. OMFG! No-one warned me about the size of the 9-10 meet. It took over 4 hours and many people congratulated me on the marshalling saying it was the fasted championship meet they'd been to for a while. The Fastest? At the end, I squatted down to get a drink out of my bag, and I could barely get back up. My legs were killing me when I got home, so out of curiosity/nerd-dom I worked out how far I probably walked (I was on my feet the whole time). 7 miles! in flip-flops! And yes, I have blisters too. thank goodness they were decent flip flops with a little shaping.
Any competitions for you this weekend? (it's crazy this sports-parent lark, isn't it? I never competed in anything when I were a lass... living my life vicariously through my kids regards.... ;))
Sounds like Mom is more fried than the kids!
This weekend we only did the Odessey of the Mind thing on the other thread. No sports, which is good since lil'Pete has some nasty crud in her lungs. She's about to have some dental work done as well so I don't think we'll schedule anything until she's recovered from both. The kids are getting big enough to be fun, so we'll enjoy them now, eh?
hehe found this thread, it's like finding a pack of baby pics.....
so, to continue bragging.......
Thor (youngest) just became an academic games state champ a few months ago, Hebe (oldest) just scored a championship saving goal at water polo and hector is set to varsity as reserve goalie for hockey nest year (freshman) but is being actively recruited by the swim coach after his middle school meet results (
can't do both, same season...)
I found this thread because I was trying to find a bad parenting moment thread i started a while back.... I have a twofer to report....
but maybe I'll save them for when I find the right thread......
Meanwhile since we're wearing our braggy pants;
Lil Pete pulled a 4.0 2nd semester freshman year. They end each semester with a department exit interview. In the first semester she was told she was in the right program but that she needed to be a leader. In the 2nd semester she got a lot of love for her work, was told that she was a good influence on her peers, and had stepped up and lead. She was walking on air when she got to her dorm where her slacking roommate told her everyone got chewed out in their exit interviews.
Lil Griff knocked her SAT out of the park, was the only student musician for Les Mis, and got the SS department award for her work in AP US.
Wow! Congrats to Lil Pete and Lil Griff!
What do you put in the water in Grifftopia? And can you bottle it?
Seriously -- sounds like y'all have a recipe for success at your house. Congrats to all these cool kids!
What do you put in the water in Grifftopia? And can you bottle it?
From what I've seen Glattlandia has a similar water supply. The kids know they're loved and have the freedom to work on whatever interests them. It ain't rocket surgery unless their interest is rocket surgery.
I'll go: Mini-Pooka is finishing up Kindergarten apparently reading at a fourth-grade level. I think she got a double-dose of geek genes.

W0W ... What smartypants y'all have.
Congrats on all to all and all.
When you are my age, brag times on your children are fewer and further between.
Instead, it's usually the G-kids, or maybe even G-G-kids.
But today ! I get to brag on my oldest daughter's latest.
She essentially put herself through college and Nursing School.
She hated "pediatrics" and the "burn ward". So where did she
choose to work for the past 15+ years ?
...in the ER's of regional Trauma Centers (!)
Then a couple of years ago she hit the "burn out" phase.
But she hunkered down, and while still a Mom and working full time
she earned her Master's degree in Nursing and yesterday she...
...PASSED her Oregon State Board exams and now is a licensed
Nurse Practioner in Family Medicine. :cheerldr: :cheerldr: :cheerldr:
Excellent, Lamp. Please pass on my congratulations and well wishes.
Outstanding, just wonderful!!!
Pass on my congratulations. :)
Congratulations to all concerned! :)
Lil' Griff just got accepted early admission to her
#1 college! And in related news ... it will be cheaper than a SUNY school because tuition is based on need.
That's fantastic news! Out of curiosity, what's the name of this school with need based tuition?
Edit: never mind. I just noticed the link. Hamilton is good. They wait listed my sorry self.
I was amazed when we checked the numbers. We're pretty stoked here but she's out drumming for the basketball game so it's just me and the old lady. hmmm... she's in a pretty good mood... giggity.
Hamilton expects students to take responsibility for their educational choices. They will be counseled and supported by teachers and advisors, but the ultimate responsibility, just as the ultimate growth, will be the student's. For this reason, Hamilton does not have distribution requirements, which are found at nearly every other American college and university. We trust students with the freedom to select courses that make sense for their own intellectual development. As a result, Hamilton students attend classes because they are genuinely interested in the subject, not because they are fulfilling a requirement.
That sounds great for building responsible, self sufficient, citizens. But how do they know when you've learned enough to graduate, and what to give you a degree in?
Once you declare a major you do have to meet certain requirements inside your major. I think its only 10 classes of which you've probably taken some based on interest.
The idea that her classmates would be interested in the material was a major selling point. She's so very tired of high school slackers.
Oh OK, thanks.
The idea that her classmates would be interested in the material was a major selling point.
Ah, a go-getter like her old man... cool. :thumb:
You wanted a wife, you go and get a beauty.
You wanted a house, you go and get skills,
............................ then go and get trees.
You wanted education, you go and get schooled.
You wanted to teach, you go and get certified.
You wanted to fence, you go and get Ben-Gay.
Yeah, a go-getter. :notworthy
Hey, my coach is closeted, he doesn't like that nickname.
math do-over, 2k more than a SUNY. Still good. :)
math do-over, 2k more than a SUNY. Still good.
Sorry to laugh, but can we assume one of the classes she
wants to take is Math ?
She's taking AP Calc this semester, her Dads deficiencies don't seem to apply...
She's taking AP Calc this semester,...
Good on her.
I only got thru Calc and Phys Chem, myself, by choosing my dates from among such girls. ;)
I found one of those girls myself. :)
So my 13 year old grandson has been wanting me to teach him to shoot a shot gun. I used to do a lot of shooting, either at clay pigeons or geese or ducks or whatever upland birds we get here in Texas. But I haven't shot any of my shotguns in 2 years or so and even then it was only a once a year goose hunt.
I took him to the local gun range and brought along 2 12 gauge semi automatics and a 20 gauge in case he didn't like the kick of the 12. Before we left the house I drew out the skeet range diagram and explained how it worked and went over safety instructions and gun etiquette.
We got to the range and paid for a round of skeet each, $10 a piece. He's a skinny kid so I was worried he might not like the kick of the gun. We mixed in with a couple of other folks to form a group of 6. I went second and he was 3rd, I hit my 2 singles and got my doubles on station 1 which made me feel pretty good. I stood by him when it was his turn and gave him some pointers and reminders. He shoots and breaks all 4 targets. Wow! We moved on and I my accuracy deminished with a fair number of misses. He continued to hit most of the targets!
When we were done I only broke 10 out of 25, not bad for someone who hasn't shot in awhile I thought. He got 20 out of 25! That is like phenomenal! Especially for a kid who never shot before. We talked about it on the way home and I suggested that since he is really good at football he has an understanding of connecting with a target that is moving down the field. He told me he wants to go a lot more! I suggested he ask his parents for a good shotgun that actually fits closer to his size. I also told my wife I need a new shotgun since mine must have a bent barrel!
It's all the video games.
Good for him!
Awesome! A friends kid here was really good with a shotgun... now he's at West Point.
I also told my wife I need a new shotgun since mine must have a bent barrel!
I know, I know, don't you hate when that happens. :lol2:
She's taking AP Calc this semester, her Dads deficiencies don't seem to apply...
What does she want to take in college? Is she interested in maths and sciences?
Not really. She's much more in tune with liberal arts stuff. Teaching (Engrish or SS), psychology, archeology/anthropology and drumming in a punk band are the career paths she's spoken of lately. She's reading Greg Graffin's book right now so maybe science will climb but that seems unlikely. She didn't take AP Bio or AP Chem sticking with the Regents classes in those areas.
Her chosen college sounds like a good fit, then. Independent study and self-direction in courses at the Bachelor's level wouldn't be a good thing, in general, in a science/math degree, but they should free her to put together a program in liberal arts that will let her either focus intensely, or spread her wings.
If she wants grad school, she should stay close to an academic advisor who will make sure she gets the necessary prerequisites for what she intends to do. If she wants to enter the workforce with her first degree and has an idea of what she wants, the career offices are great at helping students arrange summer internships that help them land the job, after graduation, that starts them on their dream career.
Exciting, proud, exhilarating times. It's a shot of adrenaline just watching them start their university lives. :)
My little one got Principal's List this last grading period. This is all A's and all good behavior marks. Her reward was a limo ride with the other Principal's List kids (about 18 total?) to Cici's Pizza last Friday. She is in 3rd grade. I happened to have a vacation day, so I scooted down to the school and took some photos. She's the one with no glasses, by the door:
Take 18 kids for pizza? Somebody earned a medal for valor.
Good principal! Good kid!
Great job! I love what the principal did, too
Hey, my coach is closeted, he doesn't like that nickname.
So, not this
Ben (Haggerty)?

Take 18 kids for pizza? Somebody earned a medal for valor.
Well if they don't behave, they won't make the next Principal's List, will they? :p:
I should have made it clear that there were two trips of 9 children each. 2nd and 3rd grade in one trip and 4th and 5th the next trip, so not totally insane.
Two trips is a little better. But even if they behave it's like driving, you can't be distracted for a second or there's a good chance you'll crash and burn. :haha:
Limo, right? the privacy window, a little appreciated safety feature when used in sanity mode
Okay here I go again with Lil' Griff. (drums)

Kick ass drum solo at the 4:00 mark!
OK, my turn.
My girl is in the back playing trombone. She has short hair. You probably can't pick her out. But I think this band is really good.

Wow man! That was spot on.
It was amazing in person.
Okay here I go again with Lil' Griff. (drums)
Whoa, didn't expect that. :D
OK, my turn.
My girl is in the back playing trombone. She has short hair.
Here?
Close! One seat to our left.
AH, close but no seegar. :o
Whoa, didn't expect that. :D
I know, right? Great solo kinda terrible song. Glatt's on the other hand is just perfect in every way.
The music, yeah superb, but they hid his kid. He has to 'splain to them the Cellar wants to see glatt girl.
My nephew got to the 6th round, placing 4th place in the school's Spelling Bee contest. I'm proud because they sent home two papers with a list of 450 words. He only studied the first page. Had I made him study the second page, he would've been able to spell "manufacture." I'm proud because there were about 40 students from 3rd to 5th grade. He's in 3rd grade.
Good for him, and a fantastic placing for a little guy in 3rd grade! He'll be ready for the top spot next year. Congrats to him and to you, his wonderful aunt. :)
Lil' Griff is graduating this year and just got voted class (female) musician! It pays to play a loud instrument!
Is that it, Griff, or is she going on for more degrees?
She's off the
Hamilton in the Fall. Music is her release not her focus.
Hamilton is good. I think I mentioned this before, but they wait-listed me. Any school that doesn't let me in has got to be desirable.
Ha! :) Congrats to Li'l Griff. It's good to have a release system already in place when those first chaotic months of college start...
Cool Griff, just far enough for her to soar, and close enough for you to feel available. :haha:
Just checked out the web site ... sounds like a great fit. And close enough geographically to keep her grounded, which is important. Congratulations!!
I got a call last Thursday from my 5 year old granddaughter sadly asking, "Grandpa, how come you never come see me anymore?" Well I had been by the house a few times in the week to see the older kids after they walked home from school and Emily is in daycare and doesn't get home until her parents pick her up at 6PM or so. I guess her siblings told her I had been there and she missed out.
So I told her I would do something special just with her on Friday and keep her with me instead of at daycare. The weather here in Texas was nice so I took her out west of Houston in search of those big fields of bluebonnets and other flowers. We got some pictures and headed home. On the way she lamented that she really wanted to be a Cowgirl some day (thanks to a recent trip to the Houston Rodeo) but she had no Cowgirl boots. So on Saturday we went out in search of the prefect outfit and found her some sure enough Cowgirl boots, belt and a hat, now all she needs is a rope.
I think she had a fun day and so did I even if the boots and belt set me back $90! Can that girl strike a pose or what?
I understand that it's a granparent's job to spoil them. Good work!
She's beautiful, chris! Great pictures. :)
Did you train her to do the 3/4 pose? Or is modeling just naturally in her future?
I'm not sure she's real.
Too cute.
Did you train her to do the 3/4 pose? Or is modeling just naturally in her future?
She actually does that pose on her own. She is quite a fun kid to be around, very smart and not overly precocious. She calls the 3/4 pose with her rear end pushed out her "hoochie coochie mama pose". Keep in mind that she is the youngest of 5 kids so she hears a lot from them.
I've got nothing to complain about, I am her favorite and I get big hugs and kisses when I come around, she likes to hold my hand when we go out for a walk. I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts as she will one day be a teenager with little time for me. ;)
she's cute as a button, chris. looks like she's got a lot of personality too.
Spencer sent this via text this morning. He's really enjoying pottery. he even skips lunch to go back to the pottery shop.
This bowl is glazed using a
Japanese technique called Raku.

Raku is a pottery technique that has it's origins in 16th century Japan. We are pretty sure that it was developed by Korean potters under Japanese rule but the exact circumstances of it's development and in what context it was discovered is a mystery. The raku technique, like other pottery techniques such as salt glazing and pit firing, primarily revolves around it's firing process although involvement with raku often goes much deeper into its philosophy, roots, and cultural significance. Traditional raku and our western version of raku are similar in many ways though there are some significant differences.
To briefly describe the raku process we must understand that most all other types of pottery are loaded into a cold kiln where the firing proceeds slowly until the desired temperature is reached. This firing cycle may take anywhere from 8-24 hours or even longer. When the kiln has reached temperature (which is generally determined through the use of pyrometric cones), it is shut off and allowed to cool enough to be able to remove the ware using bare, or lightly gloved hands. The cooling cycle may last from 12-24 hours or longer. The ware is considered finished when it is taken from the kiln. In raku, the pieces may be loaded into a cold kiln but are often preheated and loaded into a hot kiln. The firing proceeds at a rapid pace with the wares reaching temperature in as short a cycle as 15-20 minutes (though raku firings can last up to several hours depending on the individual pieces and their firing requirements). Glaze maturity is judged by the trained eye without the use of cones or measuring devices. When the firing is determined to be completed the wares are immediately removed from the kiln. Since at this point the glaze is molten, tongs or other lifting devices are used.
This is the stage in the process where traditional and contemporary raku differ in technique and treatment. In our western version the wares are now treated to a 'post firing reduction' phase. The wares are put into a container with combustible material such as sawdust, or leaves and allowed to smoke for a predetermined length of time. The carbonaceous atmosphere reacts and affects the glazes and clay and imparts unique effects and surfaces to the wares. Some of these effects are metallic and crackled glazes surfaces and black unglazed clay. When the wares have cooled, they are washed with an abrasive cleaner to remove all residue of soot and ash.
unfortunately, it's not good for making things that you would use frequently.
The traditional use of raku ware in the Japanese tea ceremony has contributed to confusion about the functional use of raku. With very few exceptions, all raku fired ware is fragile, porous, and generally unsuitable for functional use. Unless such fragile ware is treated post-firing with a non-glaze material, such as a polyurethane or acrylic sealer or an oil of some kind, the pots will sweat water and eventually breakdown. Treat raku as decorative. The occasional use of raku in a functional setting is OK but keep in mind that the glaze is soft and can be easily chipped and end up being ingested. If you must use your pots for food try to limit the use to dry food. The fragility of the ware also renders the reliability of handles and other appendages extremely questionable.
That's cool. Good for Spencer!
Nice work, it's good to see the kids enthusiastic about school stuff.
(you can clear glaze over Raku and refire to make pots everyday usable, but it's not without risk.)
Nice, Jim, pass on our atta-boys. :thumb:
Adorable little girl. :thumb2:
I know it's not a distinction, but Aden got a credit for his first piece of uni assessment. He was happy, and I was happy, so I guess that's a good start. :)
Chris, that girl is gorgeous. Looks like she's full of personality. :)
Nice one Spencer! I loved pottery in HS too. We did that sort of glazing. It's gorgeous. He could make lots of money at markets selling stuff like that. :)
My daughter was invited to present the paper she wrote for her science fair at the state science fair thing. I wasn't expecting it. Her experiment on magnet strength at different temperatures had really bizarre and inconsistent results, but I guess she wrote it up well. (I never did read the final paper she wrote.) But we're off to Richmond in May.
You don't supposed they want to present her as an example of a bright student with a good experiment, failed for lack of parental support, do you? :lol2:
... failed for lack of parental support, do you? :lol2:
It's actually pretty true this time. She even had to forge our signatures on the submission form because we hadn't signed it yet and the deadline was that morning.
Nice! Dwellar hands-off parenting scores again.
Haha glatt. Good job to your daughter, but another haha to you. :lol2:
But, but, I thought Mom was handling that.
Don't hand me that buster, you know science fair is your territory. :lol2:
Well is fairness to the adults, when kids hole up in their room it's hard the keep track of them, especially if they're good kids that don't stir up shit.
Happens all the time with Mav in particular. Mum, can you sign this, I have to hand it in tomorrow. He'll even come in and wake me up at midnight because he knows he wont see me in the morning. Well, he did once. Only once.
It's actually pretty true this time. She even had to forge our signatures on the submission form because we hadn't signed it yet and the deadline was that morning.
I never did that with my parents, but in college I soon realized that all my adviser did was to check that I didn't have any class conflicts. I thought "I can do that much myself" so for about the last 3 years of college I just forged his initials on the form and he never knew any better. It seems he wasn't keeping track of who he signed for, and who he didn't.
Finally got to meet grandchild #14, Caitllin Mary Rosa She is now 3 months old and she and her mother are on a short stay in Seattle until they venture up to Gustavus, Alaska where they will stay with her brother and his wife for the summer. Funny feeling when your babies are all grown up and have their own babies!
I took quite a few pictures but got this nice one of mother and daughter yesterday afternoon. Played with it in Lightroom and got this:
What a lovely picture. Your grandson looks like a wizened old man. :)
My daughter is fucking awesome at water polo. that is all.
Chip off the old monster, eh? :thumb:
here's a pic of my oldest daughter, elizabeth
New wave flower children?
The inch hit a great single to left field, and fielded a deep hit into center field.
All great strides are made up of inches.
Oh yes much better, that was great. You should be busting your buttons with pride right now. :drummer:
Hebe was named to second "all tournament" team at Water polo State Championships today. And got an honorable mention for all season.
Her team came in 7th, and the "honors lists" are hard to reach for players on the lower finishing teams :D (7th out of the 8 who made it to States, but about 30 overall in the State).
Cool, she'll be growing gills soon. :D
My granddaughter, Emily graduated from Pre-K daycare and will be in Kindergarten next year. Her school does a full blown graduation with kids in cap and gown. They all got to list on the program what they want to be and she said "A Cowgirl" which is probably because she enjoyed the Houston Rodeo so much this year and I bought her cowgirl boots, a belt and hat.
The funniest part of the graduation event was how the neatly dressed and behaved young children soon fell into a group of fidgeting playful kids as the ceremony dragged on.
That's awesome. An honest photo, those fidgety kids.
heheheee...I like the little boy in the third picture using his diploma or whatever as a telescope!
Your granddaughter is a beauty!
I love these!!! she is such a doll and the pics of them figeting are great
This might as well go here as anywhere else. It's a complaining brag and a perplexed I just don't even.
The inch is just under 5 feet tall (can that be true?) and maybe weighs 70 pounds soaking wet. He nearly always drops logs in the toilet that persist multiple flushings until they are broken apart with some handy implement. WTF? His craps are the size of beer cans and seem to have the density of iron. It's been three days and the upstairs toilet still isn't flushing right.
Seriously, qu'est-ce que fuck?
I think he may only crap once a month or something.
sounds like he could do with more fluid in his diet. Maybe more fibre too.
Tell him if he doesn't drink more water (not other stuff) you'll stick a suppository up his bum. That should do the trick. ;)
If it IS constipation, you could try giving him a couple of cups of strong coffee. That is a natural type of laxative as we all probably know already.
@footfootfoot
Your post reminded me of a joke (which I thought was George Carlin's but I can't find any cite...) about the two most expressive and versatile words in the English language: shit and fuck.
"You don't fuck? Shiiit. You don't shit? Fuuuuck!"
Hector was named to the Varsity team for the Water Polo game tomorrow. He may end up bench warming, but not bad for a tiny sophomore on the second game of the year :)
(The rosters for V and JV fluctuate, official varsity and lettering depend on making the post-season roster but this is a step in the right direction :D -he played fantastically on the JV last week, scored 2 and impeded some bruiser oppos)
tx :D :D :D I'm always so hopeful for them and I really felt he earned this but didn't dare suggest it..... so now it's happened I'm bragging where he'll never see ;) He's not even double-rostered! I hope the bench is comfy ;)
....bless his little nylon speedo
Yeah, bloody well done that Hector!
I'm always proud of my kids, but some days that's qualified with a comparison of where they "could" be. Today, however, it's just straight up proud of both of them.
1.) Minifobette's Spanish teacher came all the way out to the car to tell me that she just unexpectedly spewed whole sentences in class today, basically as well as she speaks English, and
2.) Minifob is currently watching this video, of his own volition, with great fascination:

They are such smart monkeys.
Another grandchild, this makes #15!
Augustus James Summers

Had to be delivered by Cesarian after about 36 hours of labor.
Damn, Christmas must cost you a fortune. :haha:
Damn, Christmas must cost you a fortune. :haha:
I let my wife figure out what to buy and I just take the credit!
I sent my son a new camera last month as they didn't own one. It's the same Canon mirror-less I have. Glad I did, he sent me a few this morning. I took the liberty of a little post processing in LR.
Damn, Christmas must cost you a fortune. :haha:
Really!
Damn, Chris...don't any of your kids got tv's in the bedroom?!
:lol2:
I let my wife figure out what to buy and I just take the credit card out!
Fixed it.
Great news Clod.
Chris, I was gonna say "pics or it never happened" then a turn of the page and there they were. Congrats on the new addition.
At the bottom of an email from Thor's band teacher with six points about general business..... as I was about to go back to my inbox, something about point 7 caught my attention
7. Finally, congratulations to Thor Beestmonster for becoming the first member of the SSB Club! Playing the Star Spangled Banner note- and rhythm-perfect gets students extra credit points and the satisfaction of being a more accomplished musician -- able to play our national anthem, which is indeed a very difficult piece to play or sing.
he plays baritone in case enquiring minds wanted to know ;)
Not really a brag, but this is a good thread for it anyway.
My boy had a really fact-intensive social studies test to study for. It was actually a makeup exam for a test he and the rest of the class bombed two weeks ago. He was studying for the makeup test about an hour every night for a week and a half and it was brutal. So many facts about the constitution and state and federal government structure and so on. So on Sunday we went over the 15 page study guide one last time before the test on Monday.
Sitting on the living room couch and quizzing him on this stuff, he would have a really hard time staying focused. He'd roll off onto the floor and start taking a sudden interest in the foot stool legs or something. Anything to take his mind off what we were studying. So on Sunday, I grabbed the study pack, and we went walking to the local woods, and just walked around the paths in the woods for a hour and a half asking him questions, and he was picking up stick and throwing rocks and smashing sticks against tree trunks all while answering the questions. He stayed pretty focused on the topic and burned off a lot of energy, and I think that by going over these facts again in a different setting, they probably stuck in his brain a little better.
So he took the test yesterday, and is confident that he got virtually all the answers right. We'll see when the test comes back, but I got the impression as we were going over the material that it was actually sticking.
You're an awesome dad, glatt.
Be careful. this is how Hippie Schools get started.
Thanks all!
He really struggles when a subject doesn't interest him at all. It's like his mind is coated in Scotchguard or Teflon or something to repel facts that he thinks are not relevant to his life.

So. Freaking. Normal.
15 page study guide
Ugghhhh....
That is really cool. Good on you.
Oh, didja see any shrooms while you were walking??
Oh, didja see any shrooms while you were walking??
Not that I recall, but that morning I saw this big colony growing out of a small pile of leaves on a paved street. Just growing out of the leaves. They weren't even an old rotten pile of leaves, as far as I could tell.

Those look like ringless honey mushrooms, glatt. Google them and see what you think.
Could be. They look similar.
So my boy saw that video online and decided he wanted to make the same costume himself. He did this 100% himself. I'm proud of him.

So Target didn't bite on Lil Pete's product design. She took it well, her prof loves the thing and the company she did the work for still likes it and wants to pitch it to others. One positive is that she can now put it in her portfolio. As excited as she was, the kid is durable, this didn't break her. I think her fencing helped make her tough like that.
Looks like your product design was a goodun, though ;)
congratulations to all
I'd love to see the product. Probably a secret for now, but maybe someday. It's cool that the prof is so enthusiastic and there is still some interest out there.
So my son has another massive study guide to go over for this same social studies class. There's a test next week. It's clearly just memorizing shit for the state standardized test. The concepts behind this one 10 page study sheet would fill an entire introductory macroeconomics class in college. But he has two weeks to memorize the definitions of each item on the 10 pages. There's no way he can understand the underlying concepts that quickly. Pisses me off. This entire subject is a waste of everyone's time. He will learn nothing from it but be in agony the entire time.
But this is the proud thread, so let me tell you about Monday of last week. They do a career shadowing day, where the student spends the day with an adult at their job so they get a sense of what kind of work is out there. Glatt Jr. is a builder and tinkerer, so we wound up arranging for him to shadow our electrician friend. He absolutely loved it. Our friend gave him real jobs to do all day long. He was using a right angle drill to drill through the studs the entire length of a wall. He was pulling wire and making connections with wire nuts. He was nailing outlet boxes to studs, after measuring the proper distance from the floor. Cutting holes in drywall and fishing wires through. And he loved every minute of it. Our friend told him that the helpers he normally hires need to have things explained to them a few times, but the boy did everything right the first time. He promised our son that once he turned 14, if the business has enough work lined up and is busy, he would hire him for summer jobs. And then our electrician friend went home and was talking to his wife, saying that if it all worked out, he could see selling the business to our son one day and retiring. The boy is really smart, but hates academics. I think he would make an awesome electrician, and this business has provided a good life for our friend. So who knows? But he got a job offer at age 12!
I love it when adults are able/willing to see the potential in a kid. Mr. Clod got his first computer job at 16 because he was working the checkout line at the grocery store, and some dude was complaining about his printer not working as he went through the line, and Mr. Clod gave him several suggestions on how to maybe fix it. The dude said "come work for me then" and the rest is history. I think there are a ton of industries that are missing out on real talent because we're all too focused on pure academics and not the reality of a satisfying (and still intellectually stimulating) career.

I think being from tough stock helps.
There's no way he can understand the underlying concepts that quickly. Pisses me off. This entire subject is a waste of everyone's time. He will learn nothing from it but be in agony the entire time.
He will learn the terms and their definitions, though. There are lots of articles online and in the news which refer to those terms, so he'll have a head start there if he remembers them. But being an electrician will assure he can support you comfortably, in your golden years.
I think there are a ton of industries that are missing out on real talent because we're all too focused on pure academics and not the reality of a satisfying (and still intellectually stimulating) career.
Yes, I've been seeing articles about companies not being able hire experienced machine shop people.
My mother had the choice of three high schools; Classical, for college prep; Technical, for business prep, and Trade, to learn a trade.
I had two choices, Trade or Regular. Now the trade schools have disappeared.
The high schools are geared to everybody must go to college or fuck you. Unless you have a connection with somebody to get into a business or trade, you have to settle for managing daddy's portfolio.

Push back is coming. Lil Pete's friends Dad has done a documentary on it. Kids are spending an absurd amount of time prepping for and taking these nonsensical exams.

Awesome! Do you realize how rare these kind of skills are now that education is focused on making cogs?

Brilliant. There needs to be more of this.
Yes, I've been seeing articles about companies not being able hire experienced machine shop people.
My neighbor can verify this. He's talking about downsizing his shop to the point where he does all the work.
Mav has graduated high school and has been accepted ti university. :). Very pleased that he's finally finished. Cant wait to so how he handles tertiary education. :)

Congrats Ali. That is awesome. A job well done under some extremely difficult circumstances.

I knew that. sorry. :/
We gave our 15yo daughter tickets to see Pippen at the National Theater for Christmas. She's really into broadway shows now and it was pretty much the perfect gift for her. She and my wife went, and she waited by the stage door to get autographs and chat with the cast.
So a couple days ago, she told us that she really wanted to go see it again before it left town. She was counting out all her money that she had, raiding her coin jar to come up with the ticket price, but it was really stressing her out because she had spent so much for Christmas gifts. She also had plans to get a birthday friend a present and go to the Hobbit with another friend, so funds were really tight.
So I suggested she just do the last minute lottery to buy unsold seats for $25 and just leave it up to the Pippen gods to see if she was going to get to see the show again. Maybe it would be sold out, or maybe not.
So she just went to downtown DC on the Metro all by herself, and went up to the box office and got her name on the lottery list, and won! She got one of the $150 orchestra seats for only $25.
So I'm proud of her that she's independent enough to get herself downtown in a major city and get seats to a show. Presumably, she'll get herself back home as well, but that remains to be seen.
Proud of her that's she's independent enough, but proud of you and the Mrs. for encouraging/allowing her to be that independent. So many parents today would say, "Alone in a major city? Not my delicate snowflake!"
That is very cool in all aspects :)
Yeah glatt, sounds like you done good by her. I can't even comprehend what it's like for a mid-teen in public any more, guess that's part of the parenting thing, letting them learn and experience while knowing when a guard against wolves and grizzlys is needed.
I'm glad she has a cheap Tracphone. She called when she got the ticket, and called now that the show is over and she's getting autographs. So we know she's doing OK and could drive downtown and rescue her if she needed it. And she'll call when she gets to our metro station. It's a mile away and dark and raining now, so I'm happy to pick her up from the metro stop.
Yes, that's the difference these days. Being connected gives her some safety with her freedom, and keeps you sane during the process. :haha:
Well, she's been back for about an hour. Talking pretty much non-stop. She's really proud of herself.
And over breakfast tomorrow she'll say, "Oh, I'm going to NYC next weekend."
Good job Mr and Mrs Glatt. You've done well, and it shows.
I'm not his parent, but if Dana can refer to her younger brother as "our kid" per UK conventions, then I can too.
So my brother's new single release has a little feature in
Texas Monthly, which is a not-small publication in the area. Warning: there is a super-douchey quote from my brother in the article, but that's who he is and we love him anyway. The song itself is embedded at the bottom of the article, and I'll admit that while I like the melody and lyrics, I hate the vocal processing. But still! My brother is in Texas Monthly magazine!
:)That's interesting, just when I think it's going one way it hangs a left and ducks up an alley we me trying to keep up.
Good for him!
Warning: there is a super-douchey quote from my brother in the article, but that's who he is and we love him anyway.
I'm always amazed at people who can talk that way Do they just sit around, thinking up stuff like that to say, or is their brain actually wired taht way so that's what they are actually thinking at the moment?
I liked it. I also listened to Fits the Crime .

Excellent. I straight up liked that. It got a little over-produced at the end but is right in my daughters wheel-house musically. She did her first college radio show Friday night and this would have fit right in.
I'm always amazed at people who can talk that way Do they just sit around, thinking up stuff like that to say, or is their brain actually wired taht way so that's what they are actually thinking at the moment?
I dunno how much is wiring vs. habit, but he has fully inhabited that persona for sure. He's actually a lot better than he used to be; he'll make normal conversation in social settings and only go all supreme bullshit metaphysical if you prompt him. But if politics comes up, he'll definitely do a fair amount of railing against the Man and all His Institutions.
If we didn't look so much alike, no one would ever believe we were related. Which in itself is funny--both he and I think we don't look much alike at all, but fucking everybody and their dog says we do. He was once recognized alone in our neighborhood as my brother by people who didn't know I had a brother.
She did her first college radio show Friday night and this would have fit right in.
Tell her to play it, he'll kill for any kind of exposure at this point.
I sent her a link yesterday, she really liked the intro. Parental pressure will be applied. :D Your brother looks like a kid I know.
She said she'd see what she could do. with a ;)
If by some weird series of events she ever ends up interviewing/meeting him, make sure she remembers that he is way too old and unambitious for her. ;)
Hey, you're talking about Griff's kid.
Like her old man, sharp as a tack and can't be hoodwinked by ne'er-do-wells...
...even if their sister loves them. :lol2:
Hey! She dumped that boy. New guy is more motivated. :D

Yesterday she did it again. This time she introduced the whole thing to a friend of hers. They saw Chicago. And they got seats together in row E, five rows from the stage. Way on the side, but still really good seats. She's so excited about this new thing she can do. And she got J. Peterman's autograph afterwards!
What a resourceful and independent young lady! Very cool!
I used to get J Peterman catalogs, having been curious after the J Peterman on Seinfeld. I was wondering how your daughter knew what J Peterman looked like, then I realized "Oh, John O'Hurley must be in the cast." D'oh! Of course, google verified this, and then I got curious as to what the real J Peterman is like. It's an interesting story.
I need to ask her how she knew it was J. Peterman. I don't think she has seen much Seinfeld. Maybe it was mentioned in his Playbill bio paragraph.
Don't read if you are of a sensitive nature
Proud bad momma moment....
Polo Girl's oppo was playing dirty, pinching her hard after the whistle was blown so my baby called her a cunt Apparently the girl was a bit upset and so one of their mutual "friends" posted a snarky comment about it/sportsmanship on PG's faceb
ook wall. That's my girl :cuss::angel:
so, the snark was aimed at polo girl, or in defense of polo girl?
btw, good on ya, bad momma, teachin her to stand up for herself. attagirl.
at polo girl. Apparently, PG's behavior was "unsportsmanlike"
(she deleted the comment before I saw it but told me about it because I commented that I was surprised to see Littleshit had commented on her post about high school dress code but I couldn't see what he wrote -maybe because I have him on quiet mode.....) this facebook malarkey's all way too complex for old fogies like me
it may have been unsportsmanlike... coulda been.
but it's important to know how to respond in this kind of contest, and in the countless challenges that she'll face as she grows up. it sounds like she's gotten the hang of communicating in the way her desired audience will understand. I'm not advocating unsportsmanlike conduct, but I do advocate appropriate responses and I'm a champion of strong daughters. cliche though it may be, sometimes you gotta fight fire with fire. really, I'm tickled that she found a way to stand up for herself that was effective and not an overreaction.
Let's get back to things to be really proud of... she scored 4 of the 10 goals and she plays defense these days :)
DEFENSE! DEFENSE! DEFENSE! DEFENSE!
Holy shit, my daughter.
So I was messing around on our little keyboard, trying to figure out the notes to a song we had been listening to in the car ("
Freeze Ray" from Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog, in case you're curious,) and I'd found the first three chords but was still mangling the fourth. From the other room, Minifobette yells,
"No, Mommy, it's supposed to be a G!"
"It is?" I ask.
"Well, a D or a G, I'm not sure."
The correct chord was a fucking D and G together. For real.
And once I told her in amazement that she was right, she casually says, "Yeah, I think I want to take piano lessons, too" (in addition to her current violin lessons, which she demanded two years ago and is still going strong on.)
There's a chance she'll support you in your old age. :haha:
No wait... a starving musician.
Took a video of it.

And then she thought it would be funny to make me play.

Console yourself with free tickets to her shows, although the airfare will be your responsibility. ;)
So cool!
So that last three note chord was a JFC?! Awesome.
I would be stuck with G-D G-D all day long right there with you Clodfobble.
Sincerely, that's **amazing**.
Your daughter is amazing. No wonder why...
I was unable to marshal the County Summer Swim Championships this year, even though being able to do so was a condition I placed on my acceptance of the job :(
But the new Head Marshal is doing a great job, I hear, and I am so proud of her :) no-one "adult" could be found and I was asked to ask her.... she thought about it and decided to accept the challenge ....then her high school swim coach (who coaches for the biggest and bestest summer team and gets an unusual amount of say because it's held at "her" pool (i.e. Skyline)) tried to say she was too young and inexperienced and it wasn't fair to her to let her do it... but she didn't have any better suggestions so ..... Polo Girl is rocking it. :D (so I hear)
And Goalie Boy (who only swims in summer and swam under duress this year) came in 10th in the IM and went a 26 on the 50 free- faster than the best ever of his two-year-older 4-year-Varsity swimming sib.....
Camo Kid didn't miss a race (just) and didn't get DQd in the fly..... so victory all round :D
:D
How does the 4-year varsity swimmer feel about the sibling having a faster time? :)
Fess up, Beest is really a fish, right? :lol2:
How does the 4-year varsity swimmer feel about the sibling having a faster time? :)
I think she was too busy marshalling to notice. I haven't mentioned it.
Wow, good for Polo Girl to step up, and take on this responsibility.
The Inch passed his hunter safety course yesterday! We're now discussing what his first rifle might be. It's two years before he can hunt deer during the special youth hunt (Columbus day weekend) but he can hunt small game until then.
Any caliber recommendations?
.22 Long Rifle. With lots of range time.

This is cool! Good job teaching him hunter safety. I love seeing skills passed on to the next generation.
And how do I phrase this? You can't do something like shoot woodchucks from your dining room with any semblance of responsibility until you know just how crazy doing something like that is by having learned the correct way of doing things first.
Sadly, with the arrival of new neighbors the in town woodchuck hunts have come to a halt.
best to save up ammo if you have neighbors

Alright!!! Congratulate the Inch for me!
Savage's Rascal is an outstanding first firearm. In .22, sized for the smaller frame, it's made for kids. And they come in different colors.

I'm always excited to hear about a kid interested in hunting. It is to be celebrated.
including PINK - for girly girls
blech !
They grow up so fast... grow 'em up tough.
.45-70 Henry, get the woodchucks and the neighbors.
he might take his eyeeyeeye out with that!
how old is the inch now? COngrats on the safety test. I'm not a hunting fan or gun fan, but I am a safety fan :D
Well, I hunt for venison, which to my mind is more legitimate than just cutting the head off the deer and leaving the carcass behind. Unfortunately, there are some asswipes that do that around here. Lucky there are way too many deer.
The inch will be 12 at the end of Nov. The mm is 8.
oh I agree, I just still don't like it. I'd be vegetarian if meat didn't taste so good and the alternatives so awful ;)
My grandson, Brian is turning 11 and in 5th grade. He is small for his age, always has been. He decided to play football on the community league and is as expected one of the smaller players. Sadly, their team was a new team for this league as their numbers had grown and instead of just drafting the kids into existing teams they started a couple of new teams and most of the kids have not played a lot so they have yet to win a game, let alone even score so far!
Here a couple of shots of him from last week, he is in the white uniform and the one taking a dive. The other team kept putting this big kid up against Brian because they knew he could easily get by him and go on to the next kid. But Brian kept trying to block him. The big kid was nice though, after he would knock Brian down he would give him a hand up and pat him on the back.
Oh, here is one more... Ouch!
Wow, he just barely clears that kid's belly button.
That's a dangerous disparity. As long as the bigger kid is cool, no problem, but one slip of the temper, or just a misjudgment in force needed, can be serious.
That's why you should always carry a knife, then nobody can say you can't cut it.
Yeah, I think they have weight restrictions around here. Tell Brian to keep his chin up. He can play
Sprint football when he hits college.
Chris - those pics bring back some ugly memories for me as a kid. I was that small too. Then in my early teens I took up a couple sports where size wasn't as important and excelled.
Just got a text from my son. He made it into the audition only high school symphonic band. He starts as a freshman next year. Rumor has it that only 4 freshmen were accepted. (Out of about 30 trying out.)
This is where I have to admit that it's mostly a numbers game and what instrument slots have openings, etc. etc. But the kid made it!
Both glatt kids are in this band now!
That's fabulous! Congrats to him -it's seriously hard to get into symphony as a freshman here -even if you are a fantastic player they're very cautious taking freshmen because of the maturity and unknown workload aspects. He must have really impressed them

SonofV and I attended the Democratic Caucus for our precinct last Saturday. It was an overflow crowd, just our six blocks exceeded the expected 40 turnout by over 50%, 61 people showed up. Our four delegates went three for Sanders and one for Clinton. Now those four delegates have to show up to the local Democratic Precinct Caucus for the district and county. It's an elected position. SonofV ran for Delegate, came in fourth out of three; ran for Alternate and made it.
He even gave a little speech about why he should be selected as delegate/alternate. He talked about how he believes in Sander's ideas about free college and racial justice. His engagement and enthusiasm make me very, very proud and encouraged.
Hillary is so disappointed with you guys.
Love the shirt.
Good on Son of V!
That kid who will graduate college in a month had a job interview by phone today, they like her a lot. She's headed for Vermont for a face to face paid hotel etc... :)
Vermont is just the right distance, close enough so it's not a safari, but too far to drop in while on a Sunday afternoon ride. ;)
Nice! She's got her momma's face, no way she can lose now! ;)
I've never been able to say no to that face. Why should it be any different out in the world. :)
Between the three of them you can have no free will in that house.
You can't say no to the dog either.
I remember you posting about her choosing college! Now that I have one in college all I can do is stick my fingers in my ears and sing lalalalalalah very loudly (and wish her luck ;) )
Wow - lots of good stuff here. Congrats to all of you and your youngins'
Lil late, but as some of you know my son and I speak regionally about distracted driving.
He made it into the paper recently. Good stuff bro, good stuff.
Tanx!
We were recorded by the local NBC affiliate today at another local high school. They said we'd be on today ... watched three hours of crap they call news only to NOT see him. Suxors.
The footage will probably be used some other time. Sucks because you won't know when. But hey, it's on TV!
Brag time! Summa Cum Laude
Hip hip hooray, cubed. :thumb: Beautiful like her Mother, and smart too.
It was those formative years watching you build the house. She said fuck this shit, I'm getting an education. ;)

Exactly!
Awesome! is that the equivalent of a First Class honours degree over here?
Awesome! is that the equivalent of a First Class honours degree over here?
She has a 3.8+ out of 4.0 gpa. They do have an honors program where you do extra work in one class per semester but it would have added a lot to an already labor intensive major.
Griff - So happy for you guys. Beautiful and smart... Congrats to the whole family.
It was a team effort.
:sustained applause :
CONGRATULATIONS!!
Well done! You have much to be proud of.
And Griff and Pete, good job.

Gotcha .. I think the 'cum lauda' is equivalent to our 'class' - so a 'First Class' is the 'Summa Cum Lauda', Second Class is the 'Magna Cum Lauda' and Third Class is the 'Cum Lauda'. .
I think anyway. We classify slightly different over here. I did an honours degree, but it's just assumed a bachelors would be an honours degree unless something or other happened in the second year (can't recall the details) to fuck it up. So, non honours was a fall back, rather than honours being specifically chosen.
Given her GPA, I'm thinking she'd be in the top percentile of a first class honours degree.
Bloody well done!
OK, we've been at this for over a year and after finishing 2nd/3rd etc a number of times
Son1 finally broke through - AND it happened on his B-Day.
Very good! Congrats to the young man.
Wow, congratulations to all. I love seeing these pictures and hearing about their accomplishments. I need to motivate my kids to do something special that I can post.
Congrats to your son, Classic:)
Thanks all. I gave him the day off tomorrow to compete in another.
Heck if he makes any real money ... maybe he'll share it.

Good morning Sir or Madam, can I interest you in home delivery of Ensure, in plain brown boxes, delivered by unmarked trucks, after dark?
Hey, I like your Harley-midlife-crisis-Davidson, Gramps.
Do you need help putting your groceries in the car, Sir.
The senior discount is on Tuesdays, Pops.
But, but, how can that be, I haven't grown up yet??
:lol2:
Jeez. Big milestone.
Well, done, Spencer.

Congratulations to the both o' yas!:celebrat:

When are the grandchildren due
Seeing as it's a boychild in question...
any minute.
:p:
Congrats Jim. Whats the plan forward?
Big congrats! Has he thought about the military?
The girl is 16 today.
I'm proud of her. High honor roll this year at school.
And I'm bragging because I'm an awesome dad who found her an awesome car.

She'll do well, she's already got the old man wrapped around her little finger. :haha:

That's a pretty neat thing, and I can't help but think it would be even better if I knew what he was saying!!!
Pretty cool.

This is my concept of visual music - My goal is not in the story itself, but rather with the rhythm and connecting the viewers with it.
Him got other poemetry:

Beautifully done, but without a translation it is useless to me.
Beautifully done, but without a translation it is useless to me.
I think the point of it,
Visual Music is the rhythm of the movement and the beauty therein. Compare it
listening to music without words. Are the Brandenburg Concertos useless?
Having the words leads one to get caught up in the meaning and miss the message. Ever have the experience of listening to someone speak a foreign language where you didn't know what was being said but you could tell the person was angry or happy or in love? You are picking up on other cues and using your mind in a different way to interpret what is being expressed.
Similar to not speaking a language but relying on other cues such as facial expressions, body language, pitch, intonation, etc. to understand what is being said, imagine someone who lacked a particular sense, in this case hearing. How would you convey the experience of listening to music to someone who couldn't hear? You'd need to express rhythm, melody, tempo, crescendoes, diminuendoes, and so on some other way. Here, he is using his body to sign with certain emotional expression. Compare the difference between a computer generated voice reading a passage and an impassioned speaker reading the same passage. The words are identical but the meaning changes. You even hear this in songs covered by different people. Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower is a completely different song from Dylan's, as is Santana's She's Not There from the Zombies'.
I once heard an expression, "Dark to the mind, but radiant to the heart" I think that is a good clue to deciphering the meaning of this video.
I understand what feet is saying. I understood it before he said it.
I agree with Fargon, it was beautifully done, graceful, even.
But, if the man is speaking/signing actual words, I am not getting the full monty if I don't know what those words are.
And, yes, I should probably know ASL, at least some, but, I don't.
It's hard to say. I did a series of photographs that were abstract. They were of ordinary things but taken in such a way as to remove context and thereby, identity.
The usual reaction was fascination, wonder, puzzlement - with people spending a lot of time looking at them and guessing what they were looking at, making up wild stories with each other about them and ALWAYS begging me to tell them what the photo was of.
For a while I would tell people if they really wanted to know. Invariably, when I did the excitement would drain from their faces and they'd say, "Oh." with a pathetic tone of resignation.
And that was it, knowing the answer pissed all over their parade and destroyed their interest in and enjoyment of the photos.
Sometimes, the questions are better than the answers.

I don't think I did. At the moment they are on the computer that isn't working, when I get it sorted I will upload a couple,
Glatt junior got this letter on the mail today from the national Boy Scout magazine. He doesn't even remember what tip he submitted because it was years ago. And he sent in like four submissions.

He'll see the January issue soon, then he'll know what they picked.
Glatt kid has the glatt down.
Glatt to hear that. Proud of the young man as well.
Thunder Boy is going to be president. He talked his way back on to the swim team even though he can't stop behaving badly and coach hates him. I have no idea why he wants to keep on with it, even tenacious I would have given up... but he does. He's on his beyond last chance now. A single (further) f-bomb within coach's hearing and he's toast. But he still walked in there and asked to be back on the team after the last one.
(old shitty coach left and was replaced by Polo Girl's coach (Mo-Jo). I suspect the sharing of genes and body type by PG and TB may be the redeeming factor. color me cynical. 'cause right now TB is not a great swimmer, but there's a glimmer....)

Pia (yeah clever :-) ) is 3,5 years. This is her first picture of our family : Papa, Mama, Pia with her prefered teddy and Bommel our cat.
Just don't be like one of those dads who tattoos their kids' artwork onto their bodies. Hold out for something better. :)

Here are the pics to accompany the massive brag in the "Happy" thread Our boy receiving and accepting the Principal's Award from the Principal at a pre-grad ceremony last night.
...he left his (matching) waistcoat in the car so as not to upstage the poor guy ;)
glad you got some good pictures from somebody
And the house is a bit quieter now. We dropped my daughter off at college yesterday. Dickinson. I hadn't seen it yet. She'll be happy there. It's a good fit and a good school. I miss her already, but she's on to the next adventure.

Great picture! Congrats Glatt's mini-me...
Ahh - she's in for a marvellous adventure.
Wonderful. It is difficult, but it's worth the pain to watch them fly.
Fantastic for her ... and good for you. Its a major change when the first flies the coop.
You've prepped her extremely well. She's gonna soar. Congrats.
Pologirl was named to the second team in the all Big Ten Conference all season teams :D
Big Ten is one of the biggest and toughest conferences, so it's actually quite impressive
I realize that it completely meaningless to anyone outside of the US and probably most of those within...
Um.... she was named as one of the top 20 players this year in Women's University Club Water Polo in a conference that includes 9 teams of about 20 players each.
She mostly plays defense so doesn't score too many goals, and the voters do tend to get blinded by goals (assists aren't really counted), so that makes it especially impressive.
Her specialty is stealing the ball from the other team, which often has to happen before your team can score a goal :) If you score, they get possession again, so....
Oh well, while I'm bragging, Thunderboy lettered this year. In Marching Band. not bothering to explain that for non-yanks right now.... I'm tired
Well, I know the Big Ten from football anyway. :) Nice job! Great kids monster, be proud.
Lil'Gs graduation present arrived last night. We got her a Roland electronic drum kit with mesh heads so she doesn't make her neighbors crazy when she moves to the big city.
Nice, monster (x2)! And nice, Griff!

Thinking of her,
and them.
Coolsville.
She's having a rough morning. She drove to Boston yesterday to meet the real estate agent today and got an email last night which was him bailing on the meeting...
Griff,
My admiration of you and Pete and what you've wrought... words fail me.
Your swelled head is FOR CAUSE. You *should* strut and crow.
[inner voice]
what is going on with you and birds, man?

Lil'Gs graduation present arrived last night. We got her a Roland electronic drum kit with mesh heads so she doesn't make her neighbors crazy when she moves to the big city.
Awesome!!!
Question:
Does she
Hit Like A Girl?
Her drumming has improved at college. She was taking lessons on campus the whole time and founded an all girls band. Her instructor said some really nice stuff about her playing and told her that of all his students she is the one who needs to continue in music. That was nice.
They found an apartment! It's funny the guy she's going to live with was about the first person she met 4 years ago. They've been friends ever since but not best friends or romantic. Just a friend headed in a similar direction.
That's how their story will start when they tell their kids about how they got together.
I don’t know about that, she’s had a front row seat to all his college relationships. She even arranged for her sister to make stuffed animals for two of them.
Just found this setup in my shop. Clever. Or maybe it's inspiration from a YouTube video.

I don't understand what I'm looking at. Is he grinding a knife blade from scratch?
Yes. But the smart thing is that he created a homemade jig that keeps the bevel of the blade at a consistent angle. It's a lot of work filing away at that blade, and it's easy to get sloppy. His jig prevents that.
The idea is not a groundbreaking new one, but it's nothing I taught him, and he cobbled together 6 different items to work together to give him what he was looking for.
It's not the cure for cancer, but it's showing some thought.
Yes indeed, quite clever. That's the way my Lansky sharpener works.
Pologirl got into her top choice grad school with full funding :D
Holy crap! That's amazing. Good for her.
I'm super happy for all of you! What an accomplishment! Congratulations, and pass them on please.
Good for her, well done. :thumb:
...with full funding :D
Outstanding. One less thing to worry about.
Who is happier, you or Pologirl?
Dudes, dudes, dudes....... a second full funding offer from Colorado and they want "to bring her to Boulder for a recruiting event". Sadly (...it's a tough life...) she can't go because she's going to Belize for Spring Break. So proud. Nowhere else to brag though so you guys are stuck with it. Out of my system now. Ignore me. Carry on....
Tell her to sign up in Colorado too, then send a needy child in her place. :haha:
really more reportage than braggadocio. them's the facts!
thank you for the update!
and now it gets stressful. :( (for PoloGirl) ...her Honors thesis supervisor (who is also in charge of the Dig she does each summer) is advising her to go to Colorado because the program is "more rigorous"
but on a happier note, the team used her pic in a promo for the tournament next week....

She'd have to get acclimated (mile high over there) and culturally adjusted. I hope she likes mountains. I've lived in Denver and I liked it. OTOH, I've dated an Indiana native who went to CU Boulder and didn't like it enough to drop out and join the military where I met her shortly afterwards. Different strokes...
She'll need reliable personal transportation to keep from going stir-crazy, additional winter wardrobe, possibly backpacking and skiing equipment. It's about 30 mi. to the big city; so, she'll have to make the most of local escapes during the week. Send her lots of gas money for the weekends.
Would the "more rigorous" CU Boulder credentials really carry much more weight in the job market for her field than her first choice?
...additional winter wardrobe,...
The way this winter in going in MI she may have enough by spring.
Would the "more rigorous" CU Boulder credentials really carry much more weight in the job market for her field than her first choice?
Working harder to get to the same place doesn't sound logical, but there will always be some who take the high road for personal reasons.
The additional wardrobe will be specialized for recreational activities. She's probably not doing much skiing right now. Taking the high road for personal reasons has to offset the practical considerations she'll face like finding an affordable auto club that will make service calls if her car breaks down or something runs into her on trips out in the mountain range.
From Minifob's Spanish teacher:
I just wanted to drop you a short note to tell you what [Minifob] did yesterday. We are all having a very hard time, and I was not okay when I read about [teacher who committed suicide] to my 5th period. I cried through the whole thing, and my one little tissue wasn’t working. Out of all the students in the class, your son is the one who got up to get me another tissue. I thought that was the sweetest thing.
For once, I'm crying for a good reason.
Pologirl got into her two other schools with full funding too. :) And now she's off to Belize for Spring Break. Not remotely envious. not. NOT.
Best two posts all day.
Thank you, I needed that.
You two Moms deserve credit here, please understand that. Your children are using their agency to take care of what needs to be done.
Minifob's action was simpler and Pologirl's report is more of a fiinish line for a particular multi lap race, but both show that they know what to do and how to get it done.
As a parent, we often wonder if they're even hearing us. It can be exasperating, discouraging even. I am a little less discouraged. I thank you for making the world a little better.
And now she's off to Belize for Spring Break. Not remotely envious. not. NOT.
No, not all...
monster's passive aggression: she's taking carry-on only. All our cases are shitty and old and were bought at thrift stores for a couple of bucks. I had been thinking of buying a nice swivel one. (for when I start on my travel fucket list ....any moment now....). So had she as she travels a lot, but she ran out of time to shop. I could have bought her one. But I bought me one and lent it to her, so at least my case is going..... :D and it's purple :D
From Minifob's Spanish teacher:
For once, I'm crying for a good reason.
ooh sorry I missed this. That is what it's about. They can get all the good grades in the world and still not have a clue. Minifob has it going on. Despite all the challenges you guys have dealt with, you got there. Well done. Big Time.
Cellar moms are rocking it.
Oh Good Lord, I'mm'a be broke. Thunderboy is also going to be a Wolverine at University of Michigan Dearborn. GO BLUE
:D
Three down! I repeat, we have FULL CONVERSION of all three specimens in the child-to-adult chambers! Bring the supervisor a case of beer, stat!
Not until all three have their PhDs, that's a couple dollars away.

You will have you sword broken, and all the members turn their backs, as you're drummed out of the helicopter parent league.
All those years of teaching and guiding, even while you built the house... all smoke and mirrors.
I knew all along you were a poser not fit for the league.

:lol2:
wow that was very inspiring.
SonofV told me yesterday that he "wished I'd learned this earlier" when struggling through his trials.
I'm proud that he said this in the first person, and not putting the blame on others.
That's more mature than a lot of what I hear from "grown-ups" in my daily life.
My son earned Eagle Scout rank and there was a big ceremony for him over the weekend. Grandparents and his sister came into town and the ceremony was very nice. I was grinning like a fool the entire time.
It was good to have the family together.

Congratulations! What was his project?
He was removing invasive plants in a local park and planting a bunch of native trees. And taking care of them, which was made much easier by historic rain all summer.
Much like "shit men," I initially interpreted that as a weather pattern that somehow rained history...
Nice! Excellent project as well.
Congrats to Glattboy!!
Eagle.

Congratulations Son of Glatt.
Pologirl just committed to FSU for grad school and declined her other offers.
Ah yes, Fayetteville State University, just down the road from Ft. Bragg, NC. Well, she'll have lots of boyfriends. I took a couple of classes there during my off duty hours while in the Army …
Oh! Oh! perhaps you mean fun-in-the-sun Florida State. Yeah, one of my nieces got her masters there. She blew it though and got married instead of sticking it out for her PhD. I mean, what do you do with just a masters in psychology...become a life coach? Write a book about it? Yep, that's what happened to her. Her original goal of doing criminal profiling for the FBI went down the tubes. OTOH, she seems happy with her husband, kids, and living in Florida.
Best of luck to Pologirl.
My son earned Eagle Scout rank ...
When an Eagle Scout sits down, he gets to say
The Eagle has landed.

Now what's she gonna do for spring break? Come back to Michigan?:eyebrow:
Good on her for picking some place warm...
I've been told I'm not allowed to "publish" this because there are better ones coming but sneak peak at what's happnin this week....
Goddamn. It's been four years already? What are her plans?

She's going to Florida State U to do a masters in Classical Archaeology with a certificate in museum Curatorship
Two down, two to go, for her. Congratulations.
Does Florida State do water polo too?

oh yesssss. She's hoping the team takes grad students. most do, it's allowed, not sure why they wouldn't. She says to limit numbers but.... :/
I'm internet proud!
well done!!!!!
Congratulations Pologirl.

Way to go Pologirl!! That's awesome.
Here's a photo of Addie, Bryanna, and Makenzie at the softball field. Addie has turned into a good first baseman this year. Addie is 11 and Bryanna 22, but they are the same size. lol.

Big Sarge - please check your PMs.
Accompanied PoloGirl to the bank today in case she needed a cosigner to get a credit card (she didn't). Was very cool to hear her tell the banker "I'm an Archeologist" :)
Just a thought, if she's going to do any more travelling abroad: note whether or not there's a currency conversion fee. Some cards charge nothing, some up to 3% of each transaction which can add up if paying for hotel stays, rental cars, meals...etc. Even reimbursed expenses may not cover those additional fees which will become out of pocket. It's easily overlooked.

So Lil' Pete picked up a nail in a tire with three ladies from work in her car, she made a tire swap that Richard Petty would have approved of and got back on the road. She was pretty cuffed and they bought her a beer in recognition of the operation. A couple days later another girl in her shop had a flat tire in the parking lot so she asked Lil' Pete to over-see the change.
You taught them well while watching you accomplish things in their preschool days. A solid foundation for a lifetime of learning. :notworthy
My second son Maverick recently finished his bachlors degree in Psychology. He is now onto his Masters in social work. His plan is to work with disadvantaged and at risk youth. We are all very proud of his efforts. Aden is still plodding along with his business degree. Max is almost finished primary school. 1 year to go and then he's a high schooler. Eva is in grade 1!
My girl is in Oz.

Cool! What is she doing there?
She's doing a semester abroad. Living in the rain forest near Cairns, studying the forest towards her environmental sciences degree.
Pologirl stopped one of her new classmates from driving drunk.
It doesn't sound like much, but for a 21yo in a new place with new friends, and only 10 classmates, to potentially alienate one takes some guts imo, so I am proud. Seems like the rest of the gang stepped up to help. :)

ooooh I totally missed this! I have major envy. What a fantastic experience -go, Glattlet!
What an awesome testament to your parenting, monster. It's hard enough to get kids to make the right choices for themselves, but for them to have the confidence to stand up to a friend making a shitty choice... Way to go.
Monster, that is fantastic that she did that. Shows some real self confidence, bravery, and having the right values.
she is pretty awesome :) and also teetotal.. Can't think why.......
Less than a month into her studies, The Archaeologist has gotten involved with/taken over the preparation of an exhibition (known as preparating, apparently) and the supervising prof has already offered to write her a recommendation letter when she needs one. More than proud. She is having a blast, totally in her element.
Sounds like she'll be too busy for a TV.
She's doing a semester abroad. Living in the rain forest near Cairns, studying the forest towards her environmental sciences degree.
So that'd be in the Daintree? Lucky her. It's pretty hot up there in the summer though, and she'll need good bug spray. I have family up there if she needs anything adulty in the way of help. Tell her to watch out for crocs, snakes and stingers in the ocean. Maybe sharks too! and in the rainforest, feral pigs! I assume they give them at least a brief talk about all these things, but seriously, even locals can get caught out so it's worth being vigilant. :)
BTW, do you remember my husband is an environmental scientist? He teaches at a Uni here on the coast. If she's after a fun class to do about marine ecology early in the new year, he does a camp at an island where they study all that stuff. I can give you the details if she's interested. It's usually in February.
Hi Ali! Thanks.
She went snorkeling for the first time on Saturday and they had the students wear the full stinger suits even though it's apparently not the season yet. Just being sure.
Her base camp is right next to Gadgarra National Park. They have her on a pretty tight schedule, so I am not sure she is able to do much outside the program. She's got a week or so after the program ends in December to travel around a bit. She'll decide what tickles her fancy then. Probably Sydney, but who knows?
If she can she should head out west and see Uluru and the red center. Don't waste time going to a city that's just like every other city you'll find in the world. See the real heart of Australia. That's my recommendation.
Sounds like with the schedule she has and where she's located, she might be ready for a city by then. :haha:
Dumb parent brag, but I am weirdly proud... Minifobette stood up too quickly from her bottom locker, and the door above was still open. Corner of the metal door caught her right on her scalp, leaving a big old bloody gash.
Brag #1: She got three staples at the emergency clinic without anesthesia, and barely whimpered. She's a champ.
Brag #2: I finally have a kid who has had some form of big wound closure. Like I said, dumb, but I'd had stitches 4 times by the time I was her age, and was starting to doubt that either one of these kids was related to me. :) Then again, she did fracture her spine a couple years ago, and I've never broken a bone, so she's got that on me.
The stories you tell... I think there's little doubt they're yours! :D hoping for an easy healing minifobette
I have never had stitches except surgical, nor have I broken a bone except when I punched out VZ for messing with my girlfriend.
