March 16, 2007: Four-legged duck, chicken

Chrisinhouston suggested this beast some time ago -- a four-legged duck found in Britain. I saved it for a Friday, then this morning...

...a four-legged chicken turned up in Hebron.

As Mr. Inhouston put it, "Perhaps the N. Koreans would be interested in raising 4 legged ducks for food like the thread about the big rabbits." Agreed, this seems like a win, except that more people favor white meat and so the chicken is a mixed blessing.

And now, we see the folly of feeding thalidomide to poultry.

a quick google image search shows me that this is pretty common? Yum!

It actually seems more efficient, no?

Kinda unrelated ... The drumstick is certainly my favorite part.

It's Sheldon's fave, too. :D

Birth defects seem to be becoming more common in most creatures including humans, though this is possibly just the higher rate of reporting rather than proof of chemicals causing defects. However with fun things like mad cow disease out there I'd be weary of eating anything with such a defect, since there are often other problems with the animal that could cause unexpected side effects when consumed.

And given the use of hormones in promoting growth in chickens I've almost given up on eating the meat given the fact the hormones used in some cases are known to cause sterility in humans.

However I like the drumsticks too, though most of my family prefer breast meat.

It's interesting how these sorts of things get people's attention. My science room in high school had a pair of bull testes in a bottle of formaldhyde, and a stuffed two headed jersey calf, know a few students who paid more attention to the PT Barnum collection in the room than the teacher screaming at them, and yes he screamed you could hear him quite clearly at the sickbay which was nearly half a mile away.

I am a leg man. And I like everything in between.

Here's a pig with one head, two mouths, two noses, and three eyes.

I thought it was going to be a picture of Sheldon until you got to the part about two noses and three eyes.

They are unclean. Unclean!
Leviticus 11:20 (King James Version)

All fowls that creep, going upon all four, shall be an abomination unto you.

Four legged fowl were common enough to be an issue, in Leviticus' neighborhood? Can't think of any normally four legged fowl....except flying unicorns.
Ceri • Mar 16, 2007 10:46 pm
Pegasus is not a unicorn. I would guess that would be aimed at carrion eaters like buzzards which drag their wings on the ground while feeding though.
milkfish • Mar 17, 2007 6:56 am
No, it's really an issue of translation by the King James Version scholars. They used "fowl" to translate a word that refers to all flying things, including bats and insects.

Still, that duck and that chicken - not kosher.
