odd to think you're on tomorrow already.

Still Valentines Day here. beest did not take me up on the offer of doing the taxes and wills, so instead he's sat 10 feet away in ther next room and we're IMing

(he's testing/setting up a laptop we bought for his mum)
Aliantha • Feb 14, 2007 10:45 pm
I just has a new laptop delivered today. It's very cool although I'm still on the mac now. The new one is for the kids to do their stuff on without destroying files that Dazza and I need on our computers.
monster • Feb 14, 2007 10:54 pm
New comp for the kids?

Ours got the old one
Aliantha • Feb 14, 2007 10:57 pm
Well the old one they were using kicked the bucket a few weeks ago. It was so old it didn't even run half the games they wanted to play. The kids do a reasonable amount of browsing too, so they'll take a lot less time now.

Dazza and I both have perfectly good computers, but they've got stuff on them that we can't afford to lose or have infected with viruses etc. We're just not willing to run the risk of the kids doing something wrong and crashing them.

Hence the new comp. It's not just theirs. It's more the family comp, but I'd say they'll use it more than either of us.
Cloud • Feb 14, 2007 11:00 pm

Aliantha • Feb 14, 2007 11:40 pm
Well I'm not going to worry too much about it. The kids are banned from having food or drink near the computers anyway, so hopefully it wont be a prob for us. :)
zippyt • Feb 15, 2007 12:01 am
the rule ( when the kids were younger ) was NO drinks around the key board , then the FIRST week my wife spilled a glass of wine on/in the key board , I fixed it , but she still got us a new one the next day.

Ouzo or raki, all the same. I found I prefer taking my raki without a splash of water --a traditional way of taking it, sort of the East-Med answer to bourbon-and-branch -- as this somehow caused me to twitch, whereas drinking it unmixed did not. No idea why.

However, chasing one's drinks at the evening's end with half a liter of water will do much to relieve a hangover, most of whose symptoms are caused by dehydration. Metabolizing alcohol will dry you out, which is why Mohammed forbade his followers to drink wine -- desert weather will dry you out quite sufficiently without help. Having a store of water in you for your body to draw on will literally keep your humours in balance.

I wonder if it is a quality control issue? Maybe they like and understand the market they have? They have expanded into NY but it seems like they had production difficulties when they grew. We need a Yuengling emoticon but we should limit access to Pennsyltuckians. ;)

Edison Light Beer: "Kiss your corporate light beer goodbye. Smoother, easy-drinking Edison brings new energy to light. Learn more at edisonbeer.com Cheers!" [punctuation as original]

The beer comes from the same place my family has lived in for many generations -- Hingham MA. Sundry generations of my people are buried in its churchyard.

Or does it? One source on Googling says it's Hingham; the Edison Independent Light Beer website says company headquarters is in Randolph MA. The brewery that makes the brand is located in Utica NY -- an outfit called Matt Brewing Company, picked for its combination of quality and proximity to Eastern markets.

The beer is indeed smooth, but frankly it's too light -- I go for more body. Its lightness may serve well on a hot and humid summer day, though -- which would be Hingham at its hottest, and points south.

For a thoroughly local feast then, hit the Hingham Lobster Pound for a couple pounds of fried clams a head (go there hungry) and a couple of Edisons for go-with.

I should tell Mom and Dad about this stuff. They're from that neighborhood.

Icy cold Grolsh.
Well, the off licence has had a run on Stella since installing fridges without doors (it used to be in the corner and a devil to get to)

Oddly, the Perfectly Cold Indicator on the side of the can is not blue. So it is not perfectly cold. From this I discern that Grolsh is at the correct temperature when it is cold enough for the rim of the can to stick to your tongue.
wolf • Jun 12, 2007 2:07 pm
Grolsch comes in cans?

Why drink it out of anything but the bottle with the ceramic cap?

I'm drinking coffee. It's my morning right now.
Flint • Jun 12, 2007 2:09 pm
The ceramic caps are plastic now. But you can still get that "nose hit" when you pop it. The Skunkier, The Drunkier

Because cans are lighter to carry, easier to dispose of... and anyway they don't sell the bottles in my local off licence.

You betcha, Griff. It's one of the three whiskies I have on hand, as opposed to the three whiskeys also in the cabinet (Scotch vs. bourbon here). Lagavulin is nice and smooth, with solid (but not overpowering) peat and smoky elements.

According to Miller's Brew Blog:
Miller’s take on a classic Mexican beer recipe, Miller Chill is a superpremium light beer brewed with a hint of lime and salt.
I've been asking myself whether I should try it or not.

The food and beverage industry has a tendency to take a good idea, and produce a product that tastes nothing like the description.

On the one hand I thought "Beer with Lime and Salt" sounds great. On the othe hand, it could be a NOVELTY BEER... anybody remember Tequiza?

The six-packs were taunting me. How can I buy six of these things; what if they're nasty? Then I saw the "singles" - maybe I could try just one? But this presents another problem: if I actually like it, then I haven't got another one! My solution: I bought a single Chill, and a six-pack of Miller Lites.

The verdict?

Tell me your dates and I'll take time off. It would be a treat.

Then we can work out what you want to see and I'll be all geeky and suggest an iternary - which you can of course keep if we meet and you can't stand me!

I imagine you'll have people to see & things to do, but whether you fancy a river trip to Greenwich, cocktails at Smollenky's on the Strand, tea at the Ritz, a London Walk, jellied eels in a Pie n Mash Shop - I'll be up for it. You may have guessed I love this city and I'm happy to show it off.
Aliantha • May 3, 2008 7:26 am
lol...well the planning is in its infancy just at the moment, and I may be bringing my girlfriend libby with me too, so you might have more than one of us to cope with. It'll probably be in late july/early august and it'll depend on us selling our house first. But hopefully that'll happen, and then I'll be all set. But yes, I would probably like to spend a week or so in England and see a bit of the countryside moreso than the city, but it'd be great to check out the local hot spots, and of course, I will need to see a couple of pubs while I'm there. From London I plan on getting a rail pass through Europe and stopping in France for a few days then on to Berlin where my cousin lives. Then through Asia and home.

Maybe if you're up to it, you might like to jump on the train with me over to France even. I don't speak French, so I'm likely to make a complete balls up of it on my own. lol

Yes, it's weird btw. But pleased to see we've moved on!

The best laugh I had in years was reading the Ikea recruitment ads. If I could be arsed, I'd set up an Ikea Honesty Forum, with the comments fed directly back to HQ. Most people I know appreciate their low cost furniture. EVERYONE (and this now crosses continents) hates their stores, the staff, the experience. All I can assume is that Northern European ethics make it work, and without them it is the 7th circle of hell.

Buffalo Bill's Brewery's Original Pumpkin Ale.

Punkin ales are becoming something of a seasonal traditon. Pyramid makes a famous one. BBB's OPA presents as less grainy and lighter-bodied, with a fruity note to it. Pyramid's is more pumpkin-y, or pumpkin pie-ish (had two slices of that tonight, virtuously sugar free), but either will do nicely.

At 11:00 in the morning? What a lush!!! :) I envy that!

I am having coffee with brown sugar. It appears as if I ran out of regular sugar and am almost out of half and half....The gross part? I think the brown sugar is about a year old, and I have been trying to chip at it like an iceberg, with a spoon.
Treasenuak • Oct 24, 2008 10:26 am
-chuckles- I'm only a lush on days ending in y... when I don't have to work. Or drive. Like today when I have the day off and it's raining to beat the band and cold outside.

Put it in a hot oven for a minute to dry it out and it'll soften right up. (remove from plastic bag first)

It's amazing how Ginger Ale can be so good or so bad. When I was a kid it's the first thing I noticed adults having strong allegiance to a brand name.
Beestie • Jan 1, 2016 6:03 pm
If the word Ginger does not appear in the list of ingredients (look for the % to be at least 15 - 20). Then it's just ginger flavored hfcs.

Plenty of good brands - just look for the percent and cane sugar in the ingredients.

Gosling or Reeds are my top 2
Gravdigr • Jan 1, 2016 6:58 pm

Ginger beer is actually fermented (like beer) but has almost no alcohol. Ginger ale is carbonated water with ginger flavoring. If you get Ginger ale, check the label - some ginger ales (Canada Dry for a while) didn't have any ginger in it (due to public criticism, they now put a token amount of ginger in it - enough to include it in the list of ingredients).

And, yes, ginger beer burns on the way down. Some folks think it helps with digestion (maybe that's why they serve it with sushi).
xoxoxoBruce • Jan 2, 2016 1:19 am
Burns on the way up, too. ;)

There is a resemblance to something I've tasted before, and, I cannot identify the something it resembles, other than to say it tastes like mouthwash.

The first swallow is good. Refreshingly so. After that first swallow, though, I'm done with it.

I'm glad, too. Costs too damn much for as much as I'd drink if I liked it as well as ginger ale.

I have a cheap and unsophisticated palate, apparently.

Back to IGA/Priceless.

You have got to be a "Real" man to drink wake up juice. Once a long, long time ago... I was sitting with friends at the Bob's Big Boy on 17th Street in Santa Ana Ca. And Turkey (not his real name, the names were changed to protect the guilty.) bet me that I couldn't drink a water glass full of Tabasco Sauce with out puking. Since $20.00 was on the line, I was forced by nature to take said bet. Well to make a long story short. I didn't puke, I farted and cleared the restaurant. Our waiter Rudy the Rude said "i'm in the presence of greatness". The Manager was heard to exclaim that he also was in the "presence of greatness" And since these people had just come in nobody was bummed to see them go.

I just had a cup of Cinnamon-Orange MarketSpice Tea. It's very sweet. So sweet, I got the box out to read the ingredients. They claim no sugar. So I did a Google search and the website claims that it's naturally sweet from cinnamon and orange oils. Still, there is sugar in there, whether it's "natural" or added. There's sugar in that tea bag. I'd love to see it analyzed in a lab to know how much. It's unusually sweet.

Yummy, in case that's not clear from my rant.

Drinking? Imbibing? How about absorbing, inhaling The KRAKEN!!!

Can you see the little legs (ha!) tentacles of liquid streaming down the inside of the globe, after evaporating and condensing at the top of the globe? The atmosphere in there is *highly* aromatic. I inhale through that little straw, not only but with a generous amount of bypass (there's probably a term for it, I don't know it, chime in if you do) to get a nice lungful of sweet boozy rummy air, and there's definitely a bit of a rush, albeit brief. Rum's good in this rig. Other booze, not so much.

I had a glass of George Dickel's Rye Whiskey. My *last* glass, until the next bottle.

In other news, booze is expensive here in Washington, fuckyouverymuch Costco. There's about a 40% tax on booze, which puts the cost of my favorite scotch, Laphroaig, at about $0.10 per milliliter, or about $80 a bottle. That's... very dear. Twil and I recently returned from a lovely weekend in Canada (where my beloved Rat City Roller Girls took third place in the playoffs and are travelling to Portland in December for World Championships!!!). Back to the booze, a trip that long warrants a brief detour in the Last Chance To Leave Your Money In Canada Store (aka, duty free shop). Which I did. I picked up a couple bottles of Laphroaig (Quarter Cask, since you asked. You didn't ask? Ok, that was for free then) for $57 a bottle. This worked out to about $0.04 per milliliter, a 60% discount over my local cost. For the math geeks in the room, I'm factoring in the 1.30/1.00 exchange rate and no taxes and BONUS, thank you Canada for the metric system. Here in the good ol' U S of A, we buy booze in "fifths" but they're really just 750 mils. Canadian bottles are a full liter, a fucking third more booze for the same "sticker price", no taxes, and cheap Canadian peso.

Fuck Yeah, I lurve Canada.

When I was in elementary school, they had a rule that you weren't allowed to buy more than one chocolate milk. I don't know if it was just something the administration had come up with, or somehow it was helping them meet the nationally-imposed nutrition guidelines, or what. But I would buy one chocolate milk and one whole milk, and mix them together in an empty thermos my mom packed every day. Voila! A whole thermos full of chocolate milk.

I don't usually bother with inexpensive Pinot Noirs 'cause they can be disappointing; but, this one had good reviews so I tried it ... and I liked it! Tasty and clean on the palate. Very nice at room temperature (not so much when chilled for those who only like wines cold). With 111,100 cases made, it's widely available. This one is for drinking soon, within a year, not for holding.

It's refreshing to find a halfway decent Pinot Noir at this price point. I spent Thanksgiving at my sister's house and my BIL is a big time P.N. fan (also high end Cognacs). The bottle of P.N. I brought for the dinner table was $55. It was marvelous and that's what even a good deal on marvelous P.N. costs these days. It's why I thought to share my opinion of the inexpensive one. You can easily pay 3 times as much for other brands of P.N. of similar quality.

Fill pot with water, bring to boil while adding one and a quarter cups of sugar or splenda. Make sure all is dissolved before adding two family sized Luzianne tea. Let boil for a few minutes then pour in large container. Fill pot , put tea bags in, bring to boil again. Pour into jug and top off with tap water. Makes ice tea with lemon maybe. I pour a cup and microwave it and cremora makes hot tea.

Also sorry that it's back. Did you stop drinking the coffee? Maybe it's caffeine related.

Coffee with a little milk and a dash of Bailey's Irish Creme. Morning standard, 1 cup a day or my stomach riots.

When I want to be DRUNK, I make a 21 Lengths. It's an original recipe based on my knowledge of horse racing and my favorite large coffee mug. The mug advertises Man O'War cigars...but just says "Man O'War." That was also the name of an extremely famous racehorse about 100 years ago or so; they called him Big Red in his racing days. His owner and another guy who owned a colt named Sir Barton were locked in one of those sporting hate-feuds and decided to have a match race to see which really was the better horse, since they hadn't run against each other. In horse racing a "length" is the average length of a horse's body from the furthest-forward point of its shoulder to the furthest-back part of its butt, usually about 7-8 feet but officially a "length" is 10 feet. So all the glitterati of the racing world in that era gathered to watch this hugely hyped up 2-horse race.

Man O'War dusted Sir Barton by 21 lengths.

Now if you take, say, 4 oz. of Sprite, a shot or 2 of vodka (depending on how bad you hate your liver), and a splash of any bright-red fruit juice (cranberry blends work great, though I use pomegranate since I despise cranberry), and serve it in a Man O'War mug, you end up naming it something weird like 21 Lengths.

Some years we get all fancy and do the Bucket O Blood. This one's seasonal because I insist on hand-juicing the blood oranges. Take the juice from about 2 blood oranges, pollute it with vodka and maybe a dash of a blood orange & passionfruit liqueur called Rated X, and throw in some fancy nautical theme novelty ice cubes, and enjoy in late winter & early spring. I have lots of nautical ice cube trays...skull & crossbones, shark fins, Titanic and iceberg, fish, you name it.

Maybe one of these days I'll remember and post the recipe for what started out as a homemade irish creme substitute and ended up getting named Chocolate-Covered Mule after my best friend tried a swig once and said "It's like getting kicked in the head by a chocolate-covered mule...and liking it!"

Just finished a can of Guinness' Nitro IPA. Unmemorable. I am in the land of craft beer and I've had many, many IPAs far more delicious than this one. The nitrogen bomb in the can does lend a velvety mouth feel, but that's not my highest priority for an IPA, or even a beer. I won't be buying any more of this one. In fact, that might be the sixth of six, bought months ago.

Now, Canadian Whiskey, straight from the bottle.

There's no easy way to stretch the traps without hanging from something, in my experience. And muscle spasms, especially in that area, well, thankfully they only hurt two times, inhaling and exhaling.

I'd share my unused ETOH with you, but I fear it is not peach-compatible. You still have my full sympathies, though.

Unfortunately, I was traveling in the wrong direction. I *tried* to buy a big duty free bottle of Jim Beam at JFK that was on sale for $24 (Damn, Edna!) but if you're in NY and flying to OR, that deal's no good.* Bastards.

Yeah, I used to think it was sweetened with just honey, but a closer look at the label revealed the use of high fructose corn syrup. Liars!

The problem is, plain water is too fucking plain. Tea must have sugar. Fruit juices all have sweetener in them. I've searched my local grocery stores for Kern's Nectar to no avail (sweetened with cane sugar, but better than hfcs). And I loves me some diet Coke, but that shit'll kill ya worse than sugar will.

I never tried Coke Zero, but it supposedly tastes more like regular Coke. The problem is, I don't like regular Coke at all; it's WAY too sweet for me. I much prefer the crisper, cleaner taste of Diet Coke.

Honey's just as much sugar as is corn syrup, it's not any healthier just because it was in a bee's mouth. And while I do prefer the taste of honey, I'd rather have corn syrup than Gunter's Buckwheat honey (bleah).
Clodfobble • Feb 26, 2019 6:59 pm
Point of order: honey is a monosaccharide, while corn syrup (and regular sugar, and all the other fake sugars except saccharin) are polysaccharides. It makes a difference.
Happy Monkey • Feb 26, 2019 7:06 pm

Happy Monkey;1026808 wrote:

I stand partially uncorrected - honey and high-fructose corn syrup are both primarily fructose and glucose, ie, monosaccharides.

So that part of my initial post was correct. Honey is equivalent to HFCS on that level. In fact, HFCS is more similar to honey than is regular corn syrup.

But the bee's mouth does in fact dissolve di- and poly-saccharides from nectar and pollen into monosaccharides, so it does matter that it was in the bee's mouth.

And, while not stated directly, the implication that all sugars, including those not mentioned in the post are equivalent was incorrect.
Clodfobble • Feb 26, 2019 8:40 pm
Sorry, man, I don't have it in me today. I shouldn't have said anything.
fargon • Feb 26, 2019 9:14 pm
Faye my Diabetic Educator says that sugar is sugar, no matter what you call It. I'll grant you that honey is better for you than HFCS, and I would rather they use Bee vomit for our sweetening needs than HFCS.
God made Honey, man made HFCS. Who are you gonna trust?
Clodfobble • Feb 27, 2019 8:08 am
If you are diabetic, and your only concern is your blood sugar level immediately post-digestion, then yeah. Sugar is sugar is grains is starches is fructose is all carbohydrates, even the tiny little fraction of it found in celery. It's a numbers game.

But if you have digestive disease, or any of a host of other diseases that are tied in with your body's ability to process, filter, methylate, alkalize, and run its other seemingly unconnected processes in the presence of long-lasting, persistent high blood sugar instead of a brief spike... then what kind matters.

I imagine there's at least a dozen choices these days.

That's cool. NEPA has some good stuff going for it. Do they sell farm made ice cream there too?
Griff • Mar 1, 2019 9:57 am
This is bottled in NYS, I think. I should talk to my cousin he’s always thinking about ways to make his dairy more profitable. I think PA is a stricter state when it comes to food regulation.
glatt • Mar 1, 2019 1:54 pm
In the summers when I visit a lake in the Honesdale/Carbondale area, my family members often disappear to go to the dairy, and they come back with milk and ice cream, in containers with no labels. I have no idea where they are going but they aren't gone for that long, so it must be in the area.

Carruthers • Mar 10, 2019 11:26 am
As per usual for this time of the day, it's a mug of tea.
I'm at one end of the house and Dad (also with cuppa) is at the other, watching the birds from his seat in the conservatory.

I filled up the feeders a little while ago which has attracted the attention of the local squirrels.
Every minute or two Dad invites them 'to leave the premises' in a tone and volume that would scare off a Brontosaurus.
Gravdigr • Mar 10, 2019 11:41 am
I wish I had a conservatory.

I'd have people over, escort them into the conservatory.

And ask "What is a 'conservatory'?"

And when they told me it's a greenhouse, I'd throw a geranium at them.
Gravdigr • Mar 10, 2019 11:43 am

ew.

At Chinook's last night before the competition, Twil and I each had a cocktail. She ordered a "Fisherman's Lemonade" which is lemonade and Midori and vodka (I think, no doubt about the Midori though). I ordered mumblemuble something Spiked Lemonade, which turned out to be cranberry with our friend vodka on board. The drinks were very tasty, but the most interesting thing in my opinion was how closely they resembled a pair of lowball glasses we have at home.

Kentucky bourbon and Diet Coke, my usual. After doing some yard work this morning before it got too hot (currently 77 degrees), doing two loads of laundry, cleaning the kitchen/unloading the dishwasher/etc., eating lunch (yummy homemade chili), and setting up my new microwave oven and thoroughly reading the user manual, it's cocktail hour. 4-pack of Reed's Extra Ginger Brew. It's strong.

Separately: Shackleton Blended Malt. Named for and copied after the famous Antarctic explorer. Seems his team mislaid a case of Scotch which languished inside the ice cap for upwards of a century until somebody noticed something sticking up.

The stuff comes off like a Highland-style malt Scotch -- smoothly elusive, not overly peaty.

Now that surgery is long past, pulled the cork on my Springbank 10yo.

Spiritous bite to the nose, otherwise very hard to describe. Unlike any other single malt I've tasted. Sweet intially, like a Speyside, but without the graininess of many Speysides; indeed sweeter on the tongue than those Speysides. Whisky-spirits kind of finish, rather short, but powerful. If there is any peat, I can't find it. That said, there *is* some smoke, just enough to be Scottish I guess -- just not the blatant peatiness of the Islays.

Smooth, sweet, not subtle nor elusive.
Would go damned well with chocolate...
Have not attempted 'opening' it with a few drops of designer water.

While once there were many Campbelltown whiskies, this is one of the two or three survivors, and I believe the largest.

Coffee.

… Researchers analyzed data from nine previously published studies with a total of more than 430,000 participants and found that drinking two additional cups of coffee a day was linked to a 44% lower risk of developing liver cirrhosis. ...

… Combined, the studies included 1,990 patients with cirrhosis. …

… “Cirrhosis is potentially fatal and there is no cure as such,” said lead study author Dr. Oliver Kennedy of Southampton University in the U.K.

“Therefore, it is significant that the risk of developing cirrhosis may be reduced by consumption of coffee, a cheap, ubiquitous and well-tolerated beverage,” Kennedy added by email. …

… Compared to no coffee consumption, researchers estimated one cup a day was tied to a 22% lower risk of cirrhosis. With two cups, the risk dropped by 43%, while it declined 57% for three cups and 65% with four cups. ...

… Cirrhosis kills more than one million people every year worldwide. It can be caused by hepatitis infections, excessive alcohol consumption, immune disorders, and fatty liver disease, which is tied to obesity and diabetes. …

I've said the hell with it and started drinking the wine I stashed away over the years.
The last two nights we enjoyed a 1980 McDowell Valley Vineyards Estate Bottled 1980 Syrah. California, Mendocino County, about 25 miles south.
40 years old, good cork and just a little sediment.
It has a great, mature nose and is what you hope for in a soft palate.
A bonus is that the winery's winemaker at the time, George Bursick, was a friend of mine and his name is on the label.

I should have started this with our two-weeks-ago 1996 "Knotty Vine" Zinfandel from Rodney Strong and a 1980 Parducci Petite Sirah before that.
Both had difficult corks and needed straining, but were otherwise very nice.

More reports to come.

A St. Pat's tale from my Cellar.
To enhance a tasty (if I do say so myself) corned beef, potatoes and cabbage meal yesterday I opened a 1977 Sanford and Benedict Santa Inez Valley (Santa Barbara County) Cabernet Sauvignon.
My girlfriend and I bought several bottles of this and other wines at the winery in 1980.
We had a nice afternoon there with the facility almost to ourselves and shared our picnic with the eponymous owners and winemakers.
The place has grown tremendously and is now Sanford Winery even though Benedict is still around.
The wine was my fourth good one in a row. with a sound cork, good color, almost no oxidation, still lots of fruit in the nose and nice soft tannins.
The insulated but not cooled cabinet I built long ago seems to work well, keeping daily temperature fluctuation to a minimum.
I know I'll get a bottle of vinegar eventually, but so far so good.

The Chinese were testing chloroquine. We're going with hydroxychloroquine, a derivative of chloroquine with fewer side effects than chloroquine or primaquine.

While there isn't an adverse drug interaction with hydroxychloroquine and alcohol, it is metabolized by the liver and excessive alcohol consumption can change how it works.

Bottles from the crypt, part 5.
This was actually last week's wine that took a while to fully appreciate.
It was a 1981 V. Sattui Cabernet Sauvignon from their Preston Vineyard in the Napa valley.
The exposed top of the cork was nasty with mold and perhaps other stuff. It came out in pieces and the smell of vinegar and worse filled the kitchen.
This was the dreaded volatile acidity (acetic acid) one fears with old wines.
And it tasted bad, too.
I opened an alternate recent purchase and left the old bottle on the sink with the cork out, expecting to pour it out in the morning.
When it came time for its demise, I poured a little for a final sniff and found the fault to have disappeared!
It was too early in the day to sip it, but by dinner time it still smelled good and tasted soft and mellow, if not award winning.
In my experience and reading, this is not supposed to happen, but it remained drinkable for a day or two.
So I learned a few things that didn't even come close to killing me.
# 6 tomorrow.

Wow, the Sattui came back from the dead! Tales from the crypt.
I'm confused by your statement, "It was too early in the day to sip it," what is that in English?
Diaphone Jim • Apr 7, 2020 5:56 pm
While I have never been shy about enjoying almost every kind of alcoholic beverage, they don't taste as good before breakfast or even lunch.

I worked around wine tasting rooms for years and grew suspicious as visitors made claims about how fresh and discerning their palates were in the morning and please could they have just a little more of that pinot noir.

Perhaps also contributory, when I was in college, there was a football season activity called "suds at sunrise," when kegs were killed by the dozens. I felt like shit all day afterwards and never knew who won the game.
So I usually keep my yard arm time around five.

I forgot to mention that my Sattui was number 15761 out of 29285 bottled.
I also just thought to look and I found a 1982 currently for sale for $100, and an '85 for $70.
sexobon • Apr 7, 2020 8:32 pm
Those prices aren't bad. I used to buy Bordeaux top growths. For instance, I bought a half case of the 1982 Château Haut-Brion at $55 a bottle in early '85. Then the newly evolving Chinese upper class latched onto Bordeaux wines as status symbols and drove prices through the roof. By the time I was opening my bottles with holiday meals, 20-25 years later, the price had already shot up into the hundreds of dollars each. Today you can get the price down to around $850 a bottle if you buy it by the case; but, a little over $1K each by the bottle. Not for me. I felt a bit crazy for indulging in the $55 bottles at the time. These days, that's nothing for good wines from anywhere.

Price in Pounds per case of 12.

Guayaki Yerba Mate...Enlighten Mint flavor

I take my mate amargo, sucked from the gourd. More fuerza to the brew than what's in those cans. Not that flavored mate is unknown at all, even in the half kilo bag.

Half(ish) full of la yerba out of the bag (looks like chopped alfalfa), wet down with cool water, then infused using justlukewarm water. It is mate manners to drink the first, potentially bitter, gourdful yourself before infusing the next one for your guest. Very gradually, mixing cool water with hot, increase the infusing temperature with each succeeding gourdful. Your mate is giving its best flavor when a little greenish foam is visible on top; foamless is pretty much spent, recharge your gourd with fresh yerba.

Some brands/blends include stems and twiglets -- these add a bit of something. Kind of bori-cha.

You do need the bombilla to drink with; it has a bulbous strainer, whence its name.

The wife says when I'm wearing rumpled khaki shorts of a summer day and drinking a gourdful that it makes me look like a rather demented planter of some interesting South American crop.

The wine I pulled at random from my stash this week was a 1990 Zinfandel from Greenwood Ridge Vineyards in Philo, Mendocino County, California.
The winery is in the Anderson Valley, but the grapes came from old vines in the Alexander Valley, Sonoma County.
It has great facility and tasting room and makes really nice wine, especially late harvest ones.
For many years, it also has hosted the World Wine Tasting Championships which demand of both amateur and professional noses and palates knowledge of varieties, appellations, vintages and even individual wineries.
This wine had a dry cork and little sediment.
The nose and flavors were very agreeable, but not outstanding: a quite nice experience in total. It was the right time, or maybe a little late, to enjoy it.

This week's lucky pick was from a small local winery: Frey Vineyards of Redwood Valley.
They may have been California's first 100% organic producer and the whole Frey family were involved at the remote ranch.
The wine was a 1984 Mendocino appellation Cabernet Sauvignon which the label promised would improve for 2 to 3 years. Instead I found it very enjoyable at 36.
The winery is slowly recovering from almost total destruction in the 2018 fires that raged around their valley and mine.

My son-in-law brought me some fresh caught ocean fish over the past month and they paired better with fresh bought white wines than with elderly reds.
I did pull a few of the latter from their hiding place in the cabinet.
One was a 1985 Milano Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma County grapes, even though the Winery is the furthest one south in Mendocino County.
This small winery has been in production since the '70's and has a friendly tasting room on a two lane section of US 101 south of Hopland; the turn-in northbound is a white knuckle one with the southbound one much safer.
The wine was in good shape and tasty, but surprisingly similar to the next victim, a 1985 Sirah-Syrah from Preston Vineyards in the Dry Creek Valley near Healdsburg in Sonoma County.
It was a blend of 56% Petite Syrah and 46% Sirah. The winery still makes this Rhone variety blend but varies the mix.
I guess the similarity we found between these two very different wines comes from the waning of the influence their source fruit.
The corks I am encountering have benefited from storing the bottles on their sides for 30+ years, keeping them from drying out. They are fragile, however, and I am trying different extraction methods to keep particles from the wine; so far a really fine strainer has been necessary.
sexobon • May 19, 2020 1:22 pm
I just use a paper coffee filter in a funnel when pouring vintage port from bottle to decanter. They're thin: so, they don't absorb much.

I suppose you could use a surgical mask; but, stay away from N95s. They absorb too much wine and are difficult to wring out.

Last night I liberated a 1978 Parducci Mendocino County Cabernet-Merlot.
It was a Cellarmaster label with 60/40 blend.
The cork was stained only about 2/3 of its length and came free easily.
After 42 years it lacked a lot of fruit smells and tastes, but was all-around very pleasant.
This wine was part of a statewide effort in California to mimic Bordeaux wines from France using their traditional varieties. They came up with the name Meritage and many wineries produced them.
The blends still are common, but I am not sure if the term survives.
BigV • Jun 11, 2020 8:51 pm
I wouldn't mourn the passing of the marketing term.

I'm interested by your observation that the fruit smells and tastes were lacking--what else is there in wine but fruit? #notasommelier

I am drinking--trying to drink--a little bit of bourbon. It seems the glass I used wasn't rinsed completely and the taste of soap dominated the booze. I threw it out. I poured another in a new glass--same result.

Now I'm sad *AND* sober. wtf.

Fruit can be harvested at different levels of ripeness. When Bordeaux and California wines are compared, it's often said that California wines are more "fruit forward" (riper tasting). Wines made from very ripe grapes can even be jammy (reminiscent of grape jam). Wines continue to evolve in the bottle and change chemically. The aromas and flavors of fruit can become subdued. It's probably more readily noticed by those used to drinking California wines rather than Bordeaux.

Just got Truly pineapple seltzer on a recommendation, and let me just tell you.

It tastes like the can it comes in. Or maybe a sock. Blech.

Doesn't matter, not nearly enough alcohol in it.

I can remedy that. And I know how, too.

I meant to respond at the time, but forgot.
When I just got out a freshly cleaned glass for my pre-dinner S&W,
soap smell and taste is what I got. Gahhh.
It took three thorough rinsings get rid of them.
(Why doesn't spellcheck like "rinsings"?)
I don't seem to notice this problem with other beverages.
BigV • Jul 13, 2020 9:03 pm
I have a couple mitigating circumstances here.

When I'm drinking in the house, I don't have this problem. I have a few dedicated cocktail glasses, made of glass, and they're all fine. Easy to wash, easy to rinse. But sometimes I have some whiskey when I'm outside and I *strongly* prefer plastic in those situations. It's an iron rule, if you'll pardon the pun, for sipping while soaking, but even when I'm working in the yard I prefer plastic, it's just harder to break. I have a couple preferred plastic vessels I drink from ... they all tasted like plastic that day.

OK UNIVERSE I'LL STOP DRINKING TODAY. FUCK YOU BACK.

....

Meanwhile.... I've boiled the plastic cups and they're... ok? but I might have to just retire them and get new ones. They're not super special, they don't have a lot of emotional significance, I'm just really, really cheap. And lazy. Lazy and cheap. ! Which also means I drink more inside, so, glass, so, I can add procrastination to the list.

CHEERS!

BBQ'ed some home grown Pork Butt Steaks last night.
They were delicious and fully complimented by a bottle of 1991 Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Vieux Telegraphe.
This Rhone wine is usually a mostly Grenache blend.
It had a good cork and a rich clean nose. It was smooth and drinkable, probably the best of the old reds I am slowly discovering in my "cellar."
I was first introduced to this appellation by a friend of my mother's when I was in college. He would order it whenever he saw it on a wine list and I remember all as very good.
This was my only bottle and I bought it from its importer, the wonderfully named Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant in Berkeley, Cal.
Looking on line this morning turned prices for this wine at $75-$100, with 1990's about twice that.
I hope it is as good today.

I concur. ish. Unflavored for me. But then I don't like and soda/pop other than diet coke, and you can always add flavor of the moment to them. My favorite post-run refreshment (if it's too early for beer) is fresh OJ topped up with a plain seltzer. Tastes like Orangina :D works with any fruit juice and pretty sure you can extrapolate. ( Dr Pee, though ...bleugh ;) )

But anyhoo, I'm a diet coke freak (before beer time) but if I ever feel that habit is getting a bit OTT, I just sub in a plain seltzer. I find it's easier to get used to something totally different but with some of the essential elements than to a poor substitute (and in this case better for you) I couldn't find any decent substitute for British pub bitter when I moved here, so I switched completely to American lager so I wouldn't be continually disappointed by it not being exactly what I was after. worked. mostly.

Right now it’s coffee with a splash of 1% milk. No sugar.

My beverages, in order of consumption, are:

Filtered tap water
Coffee
Red wine
occasional glass of milk.

Very rare occasions I might have a beer or margarita.
