Brief outage tonight for upgrade
It's that time again; at some point around midnight EST I'll take the system down for a few minutes for a vBulletin upgrade. It should be fairly painless, although it usually takes me a day or two to migrate all the subtle stuff that is changed from the standard vBulletin, that I have to convert over by hand.
The upgrade is mostly done; I'm rebuilding the search indexes and the system will be slow for a while, but everything looks like it works.
huzzah
I would really like to change our default design; I think we have earned it and it will give us a certain... gravitas... on the intarweb.
Go for it, dude. Nothin' like a new set of rims and a paint job to make an old ride look spiff!
:worried: Will I have web-shock?
Didn't even notice the outage ... but I was on the phone with a suicidal guy at the time.
Can't wait to see what you have in mind for the look! Probably gonna be really sharp and all.

Yes, you certainly have earned it, no question. I would like to see a different color scheme. Don't get me wrong, I *like* these colors, like I like my favorite pair of jeans. But I would very much appreciate the ability to change the display, including the colors. There are times when I could use the extra camouflage. I'm thinking I'll have to check out the blog/printer view...
edit: btw, I checked out the "multiquote" option... nice. Thanks, Undertoad.
Ideally, the new style would be the default, but you could still use the old one if you preferred it.

I saw that button, but can't seem to figure out what it does. When I click on it, it just changes back and forth from a plus to a minus.

So I right clicked on the button and opened the link in a new window. Now I'm testing it. Is it supposed to open when I left click on it?
Edit: I must be screwing something up. This appears above my text in this post, but with ['s not with {'s.

It doesn't seem to be working for me. Firefox.

OK, this is a test.
Edit: Guess I figured it out. For others who may wonder, you click on the "multi-quote" button of the posts you want to quote, and then you scroll down to the bottom and click on "post reply."
Wow, thanks. Five minute service, with a smile.
Wait... Are you smiling? My meal is free! In your face!

I think you can get a lotion for that, Sam.
I just now noticed the new button... that is fun and exciting. :) I also think a new look would be fabulous. Thanks UT!

by design, do you mean color scheme, or a whole new layout? and gravitas? isn;t that keifer sutherland's favorite word?
here's one thing i like about the new whatever: when i reply to a thread, it doesn;t disafreakingpear. i browse by hitting new posts. if this is one of those manual fixes you haven;t gotten to yet, skip it. this way is better. if anyone disagrees, i will fight them.
I've made a new style available "cellar.org" -- but due to how the system decides what style to display, I can't tell whether the style will show up for everybody.
Are ya seeing it? It's not really done yet.
If you're not seeing it, or if you are and you hate it, you can change back from the bottom of the front page.
Feedback welcome.
I'm not?
edit. Ok bottom left corner of the front page. Box said "the Cellar vBulletin 3 style", I clicked on it and it gave me two choices, the one it was on (3 style) and "cellar.org". Clicked on Cellar.org and was bedazzled.:D
At the very bottom left of the home page, there should be a "quick style chooser" ?
You're to quick, I edited. ;)
A brief outrage: what's the deal with the little saxophones at the top of my tabs?
also I forgot to ask about the garbage can icon next to the paperclip icon
OH, when I hit "reply" it changed styles, too. Anyway, in the new style, the list of users on at the monent. Two of them are a different color? Well more a different shade, but they are different.
And the forum jump button is still blue?
The lighter-colored ones are ones you have clicked on.
Some of the last color changes are still on the way; it's pretty rough stuff.
Clicked on? The list of members currently on the board? Naw.:headshake
Or any user profile of same users.
Picky, picky, picky . . . but it looks like the favicon is back to a default vBulletin one.
Clear your browser cache as I have uploaded a new one.
(edit: don't know how to do that. I guess you could just wait.)
can you do a black, grey and white one, with no fills in the post title bars? maybe with no, or low contrast frames around each post?
whew. i went to vb dot com, and phucked around with a demo. not exactly intuitive like settin gthe colors for windows, is it? nevermind
I'm loving the new layout, no need to fight me LJ :)

Looks great. My only complaint is that the new Cellar banner (which looks awesome btw) is a little too wide to appear on my 17" monitor without a horizontal scroll bar being needed. The "r" in "Cellar" is cut off. If it was just slightly narrower, it would fit on the screen. Or is there some setting in Firefox I'm supposed to check so it will always load banners to fit my screen without my active involvement each time?

Yeah you are supposed to buy a larger monitor - UT gets a percentage each time. :right:
You 800 pixel wide people crack me up. How do you get anything done?
I'll fix the logo so it's 760 wide, but you people!
I like the maroon! People at work won't recognize I'm at the Cellar instead of doing real work for awhile ;)
I don't like the post font, but will get over it. Seems smaller. Is it or am I a freak?
also I forgot to ask about the garbage can icon next to the paperclip icon
tells you how many posts have been deleted in that thread, the paperclip tells how many attachments there are.
The post font has changed, and this new one is not set in stone. Good typography is critical to us and I haven't done the requisite research to figure out what our best bet is. I wanted to experiment a little to see what works.

I don't have a trashcan or paperclip. Gimme a minute I'm going to Officemax - brb.

I thought I was cutting edge when I moved up from 640x480!

I actually thought the opposite. Perhaps it's because the "old" colours are blue & white, same as the NHS so I think it can be passed off as a work website more easily.
I'll take the plunge with the new one while there's hardly anyone around until the paranoia wears off.
I love the new look. Thanks.
I'm still wondering how to use multi-ball, I mean quote, though.

We're back to 10 point Verdana/Geneva for most fonts. Please let me know what you think.
The color of the quick reply and editor is pending; it still has a light blue cast instead of the olive that matches the burgundy/orange scheme.
FWIW: the burgundy makes it more obvious that I'm playing. Is there a quick way of doing a monochrome scheme? i noticed that there was a download/search for templates thing in the admin panel. It looks like a lot of work to create, and this is asthetically pleasing, ( maybe a splash of hunter green here and there for accents?) but if it's a quick thing, a stealth version would be grrrrreeeeeaaaaat. so,yeah, thanks, i'm gonna need you to go ahead and handle that for me, k?

I like this much better than the skinny font.
Also, IMHO, the bright red of the menu bar (User CP, Register, FAQ...) and the page navigation is a little glaring in comparison to the other shades of burgundy on the screen. But I tend to prefer green or blue palettes in general, so I may just be resisting change. :)
lj: I think I can pull off adding a stealth version, now that I've pulled off this version. It's not just a matter of dumping a new template into the software, because we have a lot of customizations that have to carry over, you see. But, let me see what I can do for ya. I would do a lot.
Clod, I will tone that down. The original brighter red was actually closer to the original notion of the scheme, the inspiration for which is called "pixelpusher" here:
http://www.colorschemer.com/schemes/?start=40
I can't create a color scheme myself yet, but I can choose one and roughly follow it. This is progress.
Rock on with the new fonts, thank you!! The other was making me feel older that I was... *squint*

Same here (always at the office when I'm here) and great idea.

FWI(my negligible :2cents:)W: A "SFW" Cellar would kick so much ass, it would have to wear special ass-kicking boots.
P.S. I know that the new color scheme you did to match my signature colors the way it matched the other one also and I know that you love me so much because I love you so much and this is like a special message from you to me that you can't say out loud but that's okay because I understand and we can be together forever in my heart always.
I thought the skinny font was kind of cool, but taking it back to this retains the continuity to the old style.
I like the colors. Paging through that swatch book taught me that there are a lot of damn ugly colors schemes out there. I mean, I already knew from direct experience, but now I know where they get them.
For about 30 seconds about a minute ago ... was everything set for a serif font that was overly large?
Your right, he must be playing with fonts. :D
I really like serif fonts, at least for reading hardcopy, they are much easier on the eyes.
But not times roman. I dislike times roman. I'm more of a palatino or garamond girl.
They sure don't make it easy.
I am still undecided about this color scheme. I like the font in the reply box a lot... don't know what it is. It is fun to try out something new though. Thanks for all your hard work UT.
I do really like the new banner monkey though. Good looking out. :D

Yea!! Thanks! Looks good.

These two don't miss a beat. Ever-vigilant, their eagle-eyes trained on the wretched hive of scum and villainy known as The Cellar, their cat-like reflexes perched on the edge of the seat of a hair-trigger, ready to snap, like the steel trap that is their minds!

Stop it. Just stop it. You are banned from any more sucking up until the election is over.

Yeah. text only would be ultimate stealth. doubleplusgood.

I'm having a hankering for
waffle. (Ye Olde Cellare used to run on this.) I wonder if anybody's written a waffle <-> vBulletin gateway?

You watched the entire Christmas Story Marathon this year, didn't you? All 24 hours.
Yeah. text only would be ultimate stealth. doubleplusgood.
wouldn't IotD lose a little something in text only?
There are some really amazing ASCII IOTDs out there, I'm sure.
When I was a child there was a beloved printout on greenbar in my house, so beloved it was framed and hung in the living room (in 1968 you could do stuff like that because it was such an ususual thing). The image was JFK. You can't do much better than that in an Irish Catholic household. Well, okay, you can, but we didn't have any framed pictures of the Pope.
You watched the entire Christmas Story Marathon this year, didn't you? All 24 hours.
The only thing I need for Christmas this year is to accept you into my heart as my personal Lord and Moderator.
And the aforementioned thing about LabRat's bicycle seat... But only if you give me your blessing on that.
wouldn't IotD lose a little something in text only?
Certainly. However what I'm keen to lose is the distinctive bottle, not the wine.
Images are ok, but the banner at the top with the big name at the top and the bright and shiny circles on the right are uncomfortably conspicuous.
How come yours has the weather forecast at the bottom - thats cool!! Now I want it.
Your wish is my command.
I'll even throw in our weather... :rain: :rain: :rain: :repeat:
I have an additional opinion on the color scheme to throw out there... feel free to ignore it; it's certainly been said before that I'm not a visual person. There is less contrast now between the text of a post and the background color, and I find myself straining a little bit to see it. Quoted text is still showing up in black, which is easier to see. It probably doesn't have to go all the way to black to be easier to see though, maybe just a darker shade of whatever olive color it is.
I like the neu style it is easier on my iballs :eyeball::eyeball:

That sounds disturbingly like a new Apple product.
The "Sterile for work" mostly-gray version is now available from the style chooser.
Nifty! My life now has less color, at least at work. Thank you, UT!
Although the white-on-light-gray timestamp for the posts is darn hard to read...
The "Sterile for work" mostly-gray version is now available from the style chooser.
where is the style chooser?
white on light gray is fixed.
Style chooser is at the lower left of every page.
thanks I found it. what else is there around here that I'm missing I wonder?
I like how the banner is mostly cut off in sterile mode, but still there. It's peeking out. Henceforth I will call this "Ninja Cellar."
white on light gray is fixed.
Excellent! I like this a lot.
I tried to crop it such that only Cellarites could easily read the word as "cellar"
I give you my humble thanks. You did a fantastic job UT. As usual.
Ok, either I am retarded or the tip jar link disappeared. Am I just missing it?
Wowie zowie, we get great service around here.
OMG, thank goodness! I clicked on the new Cellar and thought bilateral cataracts had spontaneously burst into my eyeballs. Or, that I'd finally done it and had a stroke.
Whew.
Check for numb spots - you might coincidentally have had a stroke at the same time!
Check for numb spots - you might coincidentally have had a stroke at the same time!
My god, you're right! (begins to check self)
Now just remember - there are some spots you only need to check once. If you keep rubbing at them you'll get a different kind of epiphany!
And I'm sure someone will ask for footage.
three nuns were walking down a path in the park, when all of the sudden, a flasher popped out of the bushes and flashed them. The first nun had a stroke. The second one had a stroke as well. The third one wouldn't touch it.

That joke is going to the bar with me...in 5 minutes.
You can't put that kind of stuff on YouTube, so please just send your videos to me directly...
