How do YOU use the Cellar?

CaliforniaMama • Dec 29, 2006 2:45 am
You see, it's just that it's so . . . BIG.

I want to read everything. Every . . . single . . . word . . .

But, I have a life.

So, I go to the IotD first and foremost. That's what got me here and I love it.

Then what?

I get involved in a thread, but if it doesn't stay in the top I forget about it.

What's your plan of approach?
DucksNuts • Dec 29, 2006 4:31 am
New posts, then I scroll through the ones I was previously reading, get them under control and if I have time flip through the rest.

Not very effective, because of the "dont judge a thread by its title".
Beestie • Dec 29, 2006 7:47 am
I use the Cellar for whatever I need at the time....

To learn something new
To find out what's going on
To see what other people think
To learn about somebody
To help somebody
To get some help with something
To piss and moan and pretend my opinion actually matters
To crack a joke
To crack a head
To restore some order
To wreak some havoc
To jack my post count :-)
To make fun of Lumberjim :-)
But, mostly, to stay sharp.

I mostly hang out in the corner smoking a cigarette and like the idea that I can step out of the shadows and get involved whenever I want without feeling any pressure to do so. What I've learned to do is pick and choose my entry and exit points. Its like being at a very interesting party and being able to turn invisible or visible at will.

The Cellar is many things: A news source, an art gallery, a novel, a soap opera, a kangaroo court, a debate you observe or engage, a soap box, a history lesson, an evolving and slightly unstable social structure, a helping hand, a pity party, a confession line, an open-mic night, a talent show, defender of truth, an advice line, a support group.

In the end, the Cellar is the truth.

The stay sharp bit is dead on. I've had a few occasions where the cellar became my argument cheat sheet. You can see exactly where folks are going so you bomb a couple bridges and you're all set.

I read *almost* everything these days. This is what I do:

Use tabbed browsing, which is in any web browser except IE6. Set it up so new tabs load in the background. (This may be default behavior nowadays)

Click on the New Posts button.

From the list of threads that have been updated, ctrl-click on the new posts button Image for each thread you are in or that you think you'll like. Now you have a set of tabs with all the new messages.

Hit ctrl-W to close each tab when you're done reading it, and you move to the next thread.

Welp, I was all excited about this tab browsing of which you speak. Guess what? IE6

ctrl w closed my browser completely. Darny darn damn

Probably shouldn't download that to my work computer, should I?

Only if you want to be more productive.

Productive? Say that again, that was funny. :p

Ask your net Gestapo if you can download IE 7 (since they're probably married to MS). It has tabbed browsing, although I haven't used it much, yet.

UT you totally rock - I have firefox and that is, without question, the best way to read and look at multiple threads all at once.
UT You da' man!! (literally and figuratively)

Or in IE6 you can right click the Image button and choose open in new window which'll give you the new post threads in a pile of erm windows (well, that's what it's called dammit!) :3eye: .

I do the same as UT, but instead of ctrl-clicking to open a new tab, I click with the scroll wheel of my mouse. Can type one handed that way. :p

I like the ctrl-w tip to close the tabs. That speeds things up.

Beestie, your description should be the definitive description of this place. Most excellent!
CaliforniaMama • Dec 29, 2006 1:16 pm
UT - the tab idea is great. I do that with my daily "musts" so it makes perfect sense.

How do you all keep track of which threads you want to revisit, even when they don't stay on the New Posts list?
wolf • Dec 29, 2006 1:45 pm
New Posts Button is the way to go, IMHO. Never thought about that opening a separate tab for each new thread though. Very cool.

I just use the back button a lot.

Sure. Just use the good, ole' fashioned User Agent Switcher.

At the risk of being accused of teaching my grandmother to suck eggs, you do know that you can subscribe to threads, and get emails at a frequency of your choosing to tell you they've been updated, don't you?

I generally cross reference the list of titles from there with the new posts list. That way I won't often miss responding to someone and I can add interesting reading. When the new posts are too numerous at least I haven't snubbed anyone in a subscribed thread.
DanaC • Dec 31, 2006 8:34 am
I just do the 'new post' thing. When I have read as many of the new posts that sound interesting, I usually then go looking in each section to see if I've missed anything. I always read anything that sounds like it might be vaguely controversial.....usually I'll read anything political, I also usually read anything where a cellarite is asking for advice or sharing something of their life. I tend not to read anything technical in nature.....unless I am very bored and there are no other threads that I am following which have moved on since last visit.
xoxoxoBruce • Dec 31, 2006 10:23 am
With IE-7, if I ctrl/click each thread in the new posts, it opens a tab for each one. But, when I go from tab to tab, it opens at the first post of the thread instead of the last read post. :(

Well, this is the first time I've made it into the Cellar Meta forum, but I may dip in more often. I too found the cellar through iotd, but I've hardly been there since (Google Image search for something weird). I (used to) spend most of my forum time on "Britnet" (and believe you me, you think you have problems with Britney's luncheon meat, imagine the crap we have to deal with being only 1 letter away......)

I mostly browse the first two forums, but only through lack of time. If I had more time, I'd read everything. And probably remember it too. And post a whole load more. And get into a load more trouble. I ain't even touched trouble here yet, which means you haven't seen the real me :D :worried: Don't think I'd go as far as tabbing everything, though -waaay too exotic for me. I browse forums in order, occasionally straying from the path by following links in posts to threads in other forums. You find the best stuff that way. Love this site -the only one I visit that doesn't have a specific "theme" -the reason for being is just because, and yet it's not full of inarcticul8 txtRs lucking 2 find whateva. Priceless ;) (Have had to invest in some Depends, though  )

Pursuant to the FOIA, I petitioned the NSA to email me the Cellar post numbers that were caught by their profiling (e.g. key words/phrases) software. I read those first; then, go to Nothingland which so far has been surprisingly sterile. :)
skysidhe • Jan 1, 2007 10:09 am
I start at [edit- main page]. I look for interesting thread titles. Then I look by each category. My method of whether I click on something is random and irresponsible. If I havn't been here for a few days I might not find that thread I wanted to respond to either. Especially the ones where condolences or congradulations are solicited.

If that dosn't work I might go surfing for photos in any one of the cellar's categorys which is pleasing enough.

I was just pulling your leg. The National Security Agency doesn't screen domestic correspondence between US citizens. Even if they did, they wouldn't release that information pursuant to a Freedom Of Information Act request: they would release it to some Presidential aide who would leak it to the press. Thank you for your inquiry. ;)
yesman065 • Jan 2, 2007 8:15 am
I thought that was rather incredulous. tx
