Utopia: Can or should it exist?

yesman065 • Dec 21, 2006 4:20 pm
I've heard the phrases - "Utopia doesn't exist." or "In a perfect world. . . . . "

Is this something we should individually and collectively be working toward or is it truly just a pipe dream - something that has absolutely no chance of happening? thoughts? opinions?
Ibby • Dec 21, 2006 4:50 pm
It can't happen, because people suck.
Aliantha • Dec 21, 2006 5:39 pm
It can't happen because everyone has a different idea about what Utopia is.

I'm pretty certain my idea of a perfect world would be far different from the perfect world someone like ummm...let's say LJ might dream of.
DanaC • Dec 21, 2006 6:00 pm
The trouble with utopian visions is that they have a tendency to demand uniformity. that's the sort of thinking that led to eugenics.

don't start shit
Aliantha • Dec 21, 2006 6:25 pm
Not starting shit. Just making an example from our vastly different views on the way the world should be run.

edit: I could have used many others also, such as Maggie, UG, 9th etc.

Don't be paranoid.
lumberjim • Dec 21, 2006 6:30 pm
are you starting shit?
Aliantha • Dec 21, 2006 6:31 pm
Grow up LJ. Can't you just leave things alone?
lumberjim • Dec 21, 2006 6:32 pm
you must be starting shit
Aliantha • Dec 21, 2006 6:33 pm
Do you have opposite political to views or me or not? If not, then I retract my statement.

If so, either respond to the question or stop trying to start shit.

That's all there is to it.
piercehawkeye45 • Dec 21, 2006 6:44 pm
First of all, the word utopia itself means that it cannot exist.

u=not + topia=society. utopia=A society that doesn't exist

A Eutopia is a society that is in perfect harmony but the Greek's realized that a perfect society is impossible, so they used utopia and it caught on.

Read "Brave New World" or "1984" for a good view on a dystopia, or a eutopia gone wrong.

lumberjim • Dec 21, 2006 8:42 pm
take a poll...or a pole, if you'd prefer....

actually, just search the term.....you'll see.
JayMcGee • Dec 21, 2006 9:03 pm
impressive......

Spexxvet • Dec 21, 2006 9:03 pm
I live in utopia, to save all of you from the pleasure.

Ali, stop starting shit with LJ. And then start stopping shit with LJ. Whatever.

it's true......you have to be careful not to cross the line into trolldom.....something, i hate to tell you, i've seen you do. not trying to be mean.....i'm just sayin'
JayMcGee • Dec 21, 2006 9:44 pm
true enuff. I get bored sometimes. But then again, I see trolling both as an artform and as a necessary service;

as an artform, the aim is to to be elegant and encourage responses tangenital to the header subject...

as a service, one aims to rock the boat and encourage debate.

Living under a bridge is an optionl extra.
lumberjim • Dec 21, 2006 10:06 pm
to me, the difference between shit stirring and trolling is focus. if you are making broad statements designed to irritate multiple people, it becomes trolling. whereas, subtle little nudges intended to deepen or prolong a debate....that's shit stirring. Flint is shameless in this regard, and i admire his talent.
yesman065 • Dec 21, 2006 10:16 pm
Do shit stirring and/or trolling exist there? In utopia I mean. BTW does anyone have directions?
wolf • Dec 21, 2006 11:05 pm
My utopia is very different from yours.

One word repeatedly appears in LJ posts. Apparently his utopia: shit. Is that what his utopian world looks like - or just what he does when in utopia?
Aliantha • Dec 22, 2006 2:57 am
No LJ...I don't find you entertaining at all. Sorry. I'm pretty sure you'll survive it though. You have plenty of sycophants without me being one of them. ;)

Oh, and the above is just a response to your question. :)

Spex, very amusing.

I'm not even happy with the half-steps toward utopia.

As far as trolling vs shit stirring- can't we all just not get along?
Shawnee123 • Dec 22, 2006 8:45 am
All this shit trolling is why Ibram was right with the very first response to this thread. :)

very petty of you to let your low opinion of me impare your sense of humor. Oh, and calling people that do see the humor sycophants? brilliant.

try to suck less in the future m'kay?

What we have learned so far: Aliantha's utopia does not include lumberjim
Elspode • Dec 22, 2006 11:41 am
Nonsense...how would you know you were in Utopia if you didn't have LJ there?

You can't have good without evil...light without dark...etc.

Oh LJ can be in my Utopia...after he's had his lobotomy. :)
Aliantha • Dec 23, 2006 2:22 am
Oh and LJ...I don't dislike you. I just don't think you're very funny. :) It's ok if others do though. I have no problem with it at all. Everyone needs to know they're playing to the right crowd after all. ;)

Oh...and have a merry christmas! ;)

Where's that popcorn smiley...?

And as to the topic's opening question, I say "No." Can't, and shouldn't, for the reasons outlined in between the sardonic shitstirring vroom-atism. 'Cause if you guys do any more of it, you're going to need to motorize.:p
