Guilty Songs...

Trilby • Dec 19, 2006 3:18 pm
Geez, I love me some Neil Diamond.

I think that makes me alternately post-modern and ironic.

I love, and groove heavily to, guilty shameful artists such as:

ABBA

Bee Gee's

Neil Diamond

Barry Manilow (MANILOW!)

Simon&Garfunkle

You?

Ahh, great memories. I remember my dad playing a lot of Neil Diamond on Sunday on the old 8 track; I can hear Chelsea Morning in my head right now. One of my college roommates played the soundtrack from Jonathon Livingston Seagull a lot, too.

I also love Simon and Garfunkel, as well as Paul Simon's solo work (Hearts and Bones is one of the most beautiful songs ever.)

Abba always gets my feet moving, as does KC and the Sunshine Band.

I love to hear the Carpenters. Karen's smooth as silk, angelic voice gives me chills...so clear.

And Linda Rondstadt.

:)

Carpenters
BeeGees Disco Era
Pat Boone (not the Metal parody album, either)
Flock of Seagulls
Much, much more, I'm afraid. Also Neil Diamond, but I won't play guilty for him. He's one of the finest songwriters of the past 100 years, even if a lot of what he does is schlock. A lot of what Irving Berlin did was schlock, too, but no one's ashamed of him. ;-)

The Pina Colada Song - Rupert Holmes
Convoy - C.W. McCall
Anything by The Monkees
Twisted Sister

I can't help it. I love them all.

(and I played the Jonathon Livingston Seagull soundtrack to DEATH. I really liked Kyrie)

Me too on the Kyrie, wolf.

The Pina Colada song? I never liked it because I just want to say...um HELLO? They were just plotting to cheat on each other! ;)

I refuse to feel guilty about Neil Diamond!

i'm of the opinion that even the gay bands have at least one good song. this was a thread about songs, not bands, right?

tainted love - soft cell

i remember liking a george michael or wham song, although i don't remember which one now.

and stayin alive is a pretty rocking tune, actually.
keryx • Dec 19, 2006 6:06 pm

They say that trauma or improper therapy can lead to false memories.

I love them all including Shatner (with Joe Jackson)

As some of you know, my primary listening choice is classical, with broadway and jazz thrown in, plus good comedy and parody songs.

My "guilty pleasure" music is almost all stuff that was ubiquitous when I was in high school, and that makes me nostalgic when I listen too it. Material Girl, Like A Virgin, She-Bop, Video Killed the Radio Star, Pressure. Maybe a couple others, but those are the ones that come to mind immediately.

Mind you, I wouldn't have given you a nickel for this stuff at the time. Now I can see quite clearly its superiority over all the shit kids listen to today. I'm sure this is yet another sign of my accelerating decline into geezerhood.

I love 80s music, and typically don't feel guilty about that.

Except for Relax.
Elspode • Dec 20, 2006 9:45 am
I only relax when I want to come.

Try playing "guess the artist" with "Zor and Zam", by the Monkees. The most common question is "who is the chick singing?".
wolf • Dec 20, 2006 10:00 am
Strangely, that's one of my favorite songs. But since the Monkees represent a secret love, I don't usually play them for other people.

My favorite, too. I put it on a compilation CD that I *always* play at parties, and it always gets comments.

I love that song!
I will not include Simon & Garfunkel on a list of guilty pleasures, I am proud to like them.

Mmm-Bop - Hanson
It's All About You - McFly
The Ketchup Song - Las Ketchup
99 Red Balloons - Nena
Gold - Spandau Ballet
Calling Baton Rouge - Garth Brooks
Catholic Girls - Billy Joel
Wannabe - Spice Girls
Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous - Good Charlotte
Dontcha - Pussy Cat Dolls
Birdhouse in your Soul - They Might be Giants
Blister in the Sun - Violent Femmes

Some of the above are great songs in my opinion. But I do get stick for liking them.

The Monkees were one of the all time great pop bands. And no surprise, that, considering that Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart and Neil Diamond wrote most their big hits.

Okay, their actual genesis may have been screwy, but the music that was produced under the name "The Monkees" is damn good stuff.
lumberjim • Dec 20, 2006 8:56 pm
i thought of another one:

ok, 2:

the cure: just like heaven & like cockatoos
Shawnee123 • Dec 21, 2006 8:55 am
I thought of a guilty song on the way to work today:

Genie in a Bottle.

Can't help but dance to that one.

And Paul Williams, IIRC.

Not Paul Williams. It was Harry Nilson, and Carole King.
Elspode • Dec 21, 2006 10:00 am
According to my friend Mike, who is a ridiculously rich font of pop culture knowledge, Paul Williams did indeed pen some of the Monkee's songs...and you are correct about Carole King, too. Harry Nilsson I did not know about...any idea which songs?
