There's no information about this Reindeer race taking place in Quebec - so no way to know whether the big truck is required to make 'em run, or if it's just chasing them for some other reason. Anyway, it's an effective shot!

Okay... I'll bite.

Reindeer pancakes.. Yummmmm.

Wait, is that Santa's sleigh?

I can't imagine that a truck of that dimension with a load on the back would be required to make these guys run. Probably any mechanized vehicle would do the trick. I suspect these reindeer were meandering across a show-covered highway and this truck came upon them.

Is it just me, or does the driver look like a fat jolly man with a red suit?
Elspode • Dec 15, 2006 9:49 am
Old-fashioned truck dodge! Radical, dudes.

Does this fall under the heading of Reindeer games? 'Cause I don't see a red nose on any of them, and it would appear that Rudolph has once again been excluded.

Does this look 'Shopped to anyone besides me? Something's not right about the edges of the reindeer and the interface of their hooves/legs with the snow. I also find the depth of focus to be suspect.

Not to me...
What you are seeing that looks "odd" to you, is the outline around the two reindeer on the left. The headlights from the truck are limning them with light and it makes their outlines look different from the other r'deer.

I thoguht that too, about the edges, but I think it's because the first two on the left are backlit by the headlights.

There could also be some foreshortening in that image. The truck could be a fur piece or more behind the deer.
TorasMommy • Dec 15, 2006 12:38 pm
It does look a bit shopped. The three on the right in front of the snowcloud have a "crispness" around them, similar to the two in front of the truck. However they all seem to have a "splash" in the snow where their hooves hit.

Maybe something was removed instead of added.

Here's what I had thought of when I saw today's topic..

I can't find where I originally saw this on Reuters, but I don't believe it is photoshopped. Additionally, I don't think it's a reindeer race, per se, just a truck that some reindeer happened to be in front of.

Haha this totally reminds me of that Family Guy episode:

Makes me think the driver has a box of RoadKill Helper.:yum:

I think that truck is carrying a machine to groom ski slopes. Maybe they use Reindeer to keep the slopes from overgrowing in the off season.

Is the picture photoshopped? Well there is a photographer behind that camera and he is not running for his life.

LOL!

dang! I saw this somewhere! Actually, I thought I'd seen it on IOTD a few days ago, but apparently not. I must have seen it in meatspace, in a local newspaper, but I can't seem to find it. Anyway, the story is that the reindeer just happened to get in the way of the truck, which is carrying snow grading equipment. (Being a Canuck I can tell you they'd probably just use that equipment on roads, not ski hills.)
xoxoxoBruce • Dec 16, 2006 3:07 pm
I doubt if any equipment big enough to clear roads, would fit in that dump truck and be light enough to load/unload. Maybe parking lots. ;)

Pretty healthy looking reindeer compared with real working stock, like Manny, Moe and Jack.
steppana • Dec 17, 2006 1:33 am
The photo with the truck was taken with a long telephoto lens which is why the truck and reindeer seem so close to the photographer as well as to each other. In reality, there was more than likely at least half a mile separating them.
xoxoxoBruce • Dec 17, 2006 2:12 am
Welcome to the Cellar, steppana. :D
Yes, it had to be a long less. If the photographer was as close as it first appears, the Reindeer would be veering off to the left or right.
pdaoust • Dec 17, 2006 2:08 pm
You're probably right, xxoxoBruce. I've seen those little tractors being rented for Wal-Mart parking lots. The graders they use on the streets are these huge monsters that are about as big as the the truck in the photo. And their buckets are full of sand.
