"Black?"

Mr. & Mrs. Obama

Almost without exception, all reporters and pundits keep referring to Barak Obama as being "Black," and plaintively ask if America is ready to elect a "Black" for President. WTF? Obama is mulato. That's a perfectly good word. At least they could say "mixed race."

It matters because I think that's a really important part of his identity, his growing up, perhaps his own view of race.

Just a thought.
Aliantha • Dec 12, 2006 6:42 pm
Whatever colour you call his skin, it means he's from a minority group.

I've no idea whether he'd be a good president or not, but he seems to be saying all the right things lately.
Pangloss62 • Dec 12, 2006 6:53 pm
Whatever colour

I love that Brit/Aussie spelling.

Actually, I would say "mixed race" as a category is huge, but you're right that most would see him as a "minority."

For me, Obama represents one of those "Don't wish too hard" candidates because now that he's hot, you wonder how long that can last.

At least he can speak English. That means a lot to me.
Aliantha • Dec 12, 2006 7:06 pm
I always marvel at how you lot manage to spell so many things wrongly. ;)
JayMcGee • Dec 12, 2006 7:50 pm
yeh, but somehow they always manage to spell 'black' correctly..... and often. Perhaps they think it matters.
Aliantha • Dec 12, 2006 7:58 pm
Are you looking for another stouch Jay? Posting shit like that is likely to get you one. lol
JayMcGee • Dec 12, 2006 8:12 pm
'stouch'?

that's an oz word?
Aliantha • Dec 12, 2006 8:15 pm
It means fight.
rkzenrage • Dec 12, 2006 8:16 pm
Focusing on race is just a red herring at best; a sickness, closer to reality.
All that needs be looked at are the issues.
JayMcGee • Dec 12, 2006 8:25 pm
aw, ali, I'm so disappointed that you think of me thus......

I am, by nature, a pacifist..... wouldn't harm a fly, me....

(yankee's are of course a different matter....)
Aliantha • Dec 12, 2006 8:27 pm
What are you so down on yankees for?
JayMcGee • Dec 12, 2006 8:30 pm
because they're all a bunch of tax-evaders....
Aliantha • Dec 12, 2006 8:32 pm
How do you mean?
JayMcGee • Dec 12, 2006 8:35 pm
Don't they teach History in Oz? You never heard of the 'Boston Tea Party' ?

(just think of how that poor dormouse felt....)
Aliantha • Dec 12, 2006 8:37 pm
Yes but what does that have to do with the average man on the street now? (The people you talk to on this board)
JayMcGee • Dec 12, 2006 8:45 pm
TBH, I tend to talk at people, rather than to them.....

(sighs, and gives up...)

I don't dislike American people, and wherever possible I try to remind them that patriotism is not exclusively an American thing.....
Aliantha • Dec 12, 2006 8:47 pm
Oh well, you're right there. Maybe it's just the way you go about saying such things that irks people?
JayMcGee • Dec 12, 2006 8:53 pm
I'm a computer programmer, and as such have no social skills....
Aliantha • Dec 12, 2006 8:55 pm
I have noticed your limitations. :)
JayMcGee • Dec 12, 2006 9:01 pm
mmm....... so why are you riding my case? some kind of 'help the afflicted' progrom...sorry... program..
Aliantha • Dec 12, 2006 9:02 pm
Just trying to keep you out of trouble Jay. ;)
Shawnee123 • Dec 12, 2006 9:02 pm

As a yank myself, I see the tongue-in-cheek, and know even we have our shortcomings. ;)

Carry on
Aliantha • Dec 12, 2006 9:04 pm
How gracious of you Shawnee. lol
JayMcGee • Dec 12, 2006 9:07 pm
If I had a middle name, it would be 'trouble'......

Nevertheless, thank you for the thought and the effort.

Now, what do you think we should do about these dammned Yankees?
Aliantha • Dec 12, 2006 9:08 pm

I think there should be a salary cap. They buy their way to the best team. They...

Oh. Different Yankees. Never mind.
Shawnee123 • Dec 12, 2006 9:09 pm
:us:
JayMcGee • Dec 12, 2006 9:10 pm
Indeed.

To all those yankees out there, may you Rest in Peace.

I reckon that should have fixed it, Ali
Aliantha • Dec 12, 2006 9:10 pm
We have salary caps on all codes here in Oz. I think it's a great idea. The only consolation is for the 'wooden spooners' in the afl. They get first choice of the draft.
Aliantha • Dec 12, 2006 9:11 pm
No, I said leave them in peace Jay!
JayMcGee • Dec 12, 2006 9:15 pm
OK.

Locks and loads......

Aliantha • Dec 12, 2006 9:18 pm
