Boing Boing'd and circulating fast is this fascinating Daily Mail story and image gallery, for a National Geographic special to air soon.
Using a combination of three-dimensional ultrasound scans, computer graphics and tiny cameras, the team were able to show the entire process from conception to birth.

"These kind of images from inside animals have never been seen before," said Jeremy Dear of Pioneer Productions, who made the film.

"We worked with dozens of zoos and animal sanctuaries across the world. There were a lot of different challenges - recording a dolphin is very different from an elephant, for instance.

"Animals were trained to sit still near the scanners and we also inserted cameras into the womb via the elephant's rectum-But it has been worth it. It one sequence we follow an elephant developing. When it is finally born, there is not a dry eye in the house."

At six months.

At 12 months. This last image is so realistic that I think the other two are CGI-enhanced but accurate. Look at the little toes!

Why does the third one look like it's outside the mother's body? Did they just use their awesomely strong flash in that one and not the other two?

:eek2: omg

It's beautiful! aww sooo cute! precious! :biggrinlo

That last one looks like a toy almost. So tiny in it's perfection.

According to the Daily Mail image gallery, the second photo is at six months, and the third at one-year. Their captions do seem to be a little messed up though.

Cute, yes...but how the hell did they get a camera into an elephant's womb by *inserting a camera through the rectum*?! Ow.

I sincerely hope that they meant "ultrasound probe" not "camera."

I don't know, when you simmer with a cover you really run the risk of it coming to a rolling boil. I'd say uncovered, wouldn't you Zippy?
zippyt • Nov 24, 2006 10:38 pm
Just to par boil it , then its OFF to the GRILL !!!!!!

Right end of the elephant, wrong orifice.

Elephants give me the creeps. Today I have discovered that foetal elephants give me the double creeps.

If I dream of them tonight I'm blaming you Undertoad (forget the fact that the thread is clearly titled, I'm still blaming you).

Getting a probe up an elephant's rectum doesn't seem too difficult after seeing one elephant stick it's trunk up another elephants rectum and pulling out chunks and . . . uh . . . eating them.

Yum leftovers!

Managed to get back on line, but for how long who knows. I'd rather have this baby elephant any day over a human baby. Yes I'm an elephant lover, and with a baby one the way any day now. :)
