Actually ,I didn't need a test to tell me this and neither do you probably.
It's nice to get an inside glimpse of others though.

In the 60s Psychologist Julian Rotter developed a theory called Locus of Control of Reinforcement. His theory centered around whether someone thinks their life is more influenced by external factors like fate, genetics, luck, environment (external locus of control) OR by internal factors like effort, tenacity, and free will (internal locus of control).
Your results suggest you generally believe that internal factors like drive and free will define you more than external factors like genetics, fate, luck, and environment.

Thus, you have an Internal Locus of Control

I guess these things just happen to you, eh? Must be bad luck or somethin'.

But not by as much as I thought ....

Is that a reference to the lotus-eaters from the Odyssey?
Undertoad • Oct 23, 2006 12:19 pm
No, in Canadian, "Lotus Land" refers to Vancouver.

I am not making this up.

I work with remote admins in Vancouver.
I'll be sure and let them know they've been immortalized in an obscure lyrical reference.

Hm. Says I have an Internal locus of control...which, given my life, hardly seems possible.

Bear in mind--I've been up for 24 hours.

No, I am NOT doing cocaine.

Or Red Bull.

I dunno, I'm always afraid that in real life it manifests as an inappropriate lack of sympathy. On the one hand, I spend a lot of time rolling my eyes and shaking my head at certain foolish relatives (where they can't see of course), but there's a seed of doubt that wonders if I just don't actually know how to be compassionate.

don't feel bad.....It's just a silly test. It's what's on the inside that counts. :)

haha well , yeah I guess that fits in that 20 odd percent of external measure I got.

Internal Locus (56%) Individual believes that their life is defined more by their decisions and internal drive.
External Locus (44%) Individual believes that their life is defined more by genetics, environment, fate, or other external factors.

Not sure it's accurate in my case due to recent circumstances. I answered honestly, but my feelings are coloured by feeling I'm a bit of a failure and am not toally in control.

This doesn't mean I blame anyone for failures in my life, just that I'm aware I'm not succeeding at present.

Ah well, a 30 question test isn't going to explain the infinite mystery that is me :queen:

I agree, Sundaegirl. I know things could be better in my life and I have been experiencing a lot of the 'woe is me' feeling. With a few mechanisms I am putting into place I may have an entirely different result in a couple of months. I know that I am the first to admit my mistakes so I don't believe that I try to put my failures (i.e. bad choices) off on someone else. Things just have been overwhelmingly f***ed up lately. Interesting test, though.

I don't think it's necessarily negative, though. I've had lots of good luck, lots of bad luck, made good decisions, made bad decisions. In my mind, external forces don't dictate the exact path you choose, but they do tend to limit the number of choices you have. If you had asked me, I would've thought my score would be the inverse.
Spexxvet • Oct 24, 2006 4:13 pm
I wonder if there's a correlation between how "religious" you are, and your internal/external locus. My hypothesis would be that believing strongly in a superior being would lead to a more external locus, in that there would be a higher likelihood that "God (or whoever) is omnipotent and caused this to happen to me".

Any thoughts?

I consider myself athiest. my results were

Internal Locus |||||||||||||||||| 73%
External Locus |||||| 27%
Clodfobble • Oct 24, 2006 4:22 pm
I think that there is a stronger correlation (not 100% obviously, but it can be seen in the Cellar member results) between being female and having an external locus.

I'm an atheist. I don't believe anyone is in control of life life. Not even me at present! But like Shawnee, it's something I'm working on.

As far as the religious thing, it would be interesting to see a bigger sample. I don't *think* it should make a difference, at least for Christianity. The concepts of sin and responsibility and self-sacrifice aren't very external locussy.

Religion does attract people who feel out of control of their own destiny, though. But the faith is supposed to take you out of that mode.

And Clodfobble, YOU"RE a girl. so there.
