Whatcha gonna be for Halloween??

bbro • Oct 20, 2006 10:49 am
Ok, so I may be a huge child at heart, but I love dressing up for Halloween. I don't go trick or treating or anything, but there is a big bash at the bar that I can't wait for!!

I usually don't do anything drastic, but I love my outfit. I am going to be a hippie with authentic hippie jewlery (thanks mom), homemade bells (thanks mom), army jacket, and funky glasses. I can't wait. The only piece I need is something to put in my hair. I am either going to tie a leather string around my head or use a scarf I already have to put around my hair.

What are you going as?
Shawnee123 • Oct 20, 2006 10:51 am
I thought I'd try going as a sane person, but I don't think I can pull it off.
Ibby • Oct 20, 2006 10:59 am
I dont think I have anywhere to dress up AT... but I'm going as Ziggy if I go anywhere.
Flint • Oct 20, 2006 11:04 am

I always have trouble thinking of a theme, and usually don't dress up at all. So this year I'm considering going totally random. I bought some black contacts. I also bought a Pirates of the Caribbean wig/hat thing. I don't know how they will go together, or even if they will. I might ebay the wig.

I found out that if you make the hat brim go floppy instead of pirate-like, it kind of makes a Deliverance crazy hillbilly thing. I might take the beads out of the hair in front and see if I can't complete the effect. I also found, but haven't yet bought, a cheesy fake chainmail looking thing with a big cross on the front and back, kind of a knights templar sort of thing. It's really disco-y and would complete the costume well I think.

There were also some fuzzy rainbow slippers at WalMart the other day.

We're playing a gig the weekend before Halloween and I want to wear my stuff onstage. We were all going to dress up as the Tunak Tunak Tun guy, but we couldn't find affordable Indian dress.

We dont Bri!!! The last few years certain suburbs in the major cities have started their own little halloween/trick or treat thingie.

But other than that we dont, its just another nite.

Occasionally, if someone is having a birthday that weekend, it will be turned into a Halloween party.

mmmmmm......

I admire the US attitude to Hallow'een, and the inventiness they deploy in their costumes and preparations for that night. I reaaly do wish that had been translated over the pond to us in good old Blighty.....

but, sadly, that is not the case....

Rather, it has become not just an occasion when pre-teens can bang upon your door and demand 'trick or treat' without the slightest comprhension of the culture behind that phrase, but also a 'marketing opportunity' for our supermarkets to offload several tons of rather tacky 'hallowe'en party essentials', which consist in the most part of rubberised face-masks that approximate a childs perception of a vampire, and possibly even (in the de- luxe versions) a candle to put inside the (optional extra) turnip head.
wolf • Oct 21, 2006 9:31 pm
As Halloween is a weekday, I will be at work. Although there are people on day shift in nursing that dress up (this is a recent innovation), generally it is not a good idea to put on masks and facepaint around people who already think they see demons.

I do have my Official Pointy Witch Hat, but haven't worn this at work since I moved down to the clinical side.

BrianR • Oct 22, 2006 12:57 pm
I will be going in a functional costume: a maid. Since I will be serving at a buffet for a party, it was deemed appropriate. Yes, for ALL ages; there will be children present. So, NO naughty French Maid!

They asked me what I wanted to be at first, so playfully, I said "a princess". THey took off with that and told me I could be Cinderella and in my usual deadpan way I told them that knowing them as I did, they would be mean about it and make me dress as Cinderella Pre-Fairy Godmother, in an old Goodwill dress and soot on my face. We laughed so hard about that that the idea was dropped. Lucky me. So now I get to be a serving maid in a black dress with white trim. Yes, I expect to look silly but so what? It's all in fun anyway.

I'll try to get a postable pic to share after the fact, which is next week.

I know the US posters on this site find some of our weapons laws in the UK pretty laughable. While I am quite happy to accept restrictions on sales and carrying of various dangerous items, I admit seeing this poster in my local shop nearly made me drop my biscuits (not a euphemism btw)

As it's come out quite small I'll elucidate - no sales of eggs or flour to unaccompanied under 18s in the period coming up to Halloween and Bonfire Night (November 5th)

Last year we dressed the inchlet as a bumble bee. He became upset when he thought that he would actually become a bee. He maintained that he wanted to be a little boy.

This year we think he knows he will not actually be a leopard, he'll merely dress as one. We'll see. cf being eaten by a lego cow, and still worried that he will go down the drain with the bathwater...

As for homegirl, she's still not sure.

Oh shit, now you show me his sword. :worried:

Went to a friends house tonight.
The house was decked out and after dark the porch lights, light up the decorations.
The storm window/screen was out of the door leaving a hole.
She was standing inside the door, in the dark, with a smoke machine blowing out the hole in the door.
The parents would typically stand on the sidewalk and send the tykes up the walk where she would jump up, wearing red and black makeup, rastifarian wig and a hooded cape.
Tomorrow she'll have to scrape the tyke poop off the walk. :D

*Two* stinking trick or treaters. *Two*! Man, what has become of today's youth? I am depressed. If it hadn't been for the forty people at the ritual and feast, I'd be nearly suicidal.

Despite the lack of trick or treaters (I wonder if having signs saying "The Witch is In" and "Witch Way" and other such things in our yard year 'round discouraged them somehow. Didn't put the JW's off this weekend...), we had a terrific time celebrating both Samhain and my our ninth anniversary. I love Halloween.

Pics later. My wife looked so *hot*.

The usual 80 of the little fart-knockers here. I bribe them with full-size bars from Costco, and they go crazy. It is their only interaction with me and I don't want to be called that weird guy who we never see.

Two separate lads declared that my house is "really cool". I explained that it was highly mortgaged and that if I don't find some work in the next few months their parents could buy it from me. They screamed in horror and ran.
Trilby • Nov 1, 2006 11:39 am
Don't be bummed, Elspode. I didn't get nearly as many trickertreaters this year. The kids that did come were so...so...dejected and downcast that you could have mistaken them for middle aged, mid-level managers at Wal-Mart or something. So many dispirited, unenthused, "trick or treeeeet"s. Was sad, I tell you. Like they were being forced on some Bataan Death March.
glatt • Nov 1, 2006 11:43 am
Our kids started out with a lot of enthusiasm, but then kind of forgot what the ritual was, and they would just knock on the door and stand there, not sure what they were supposed to do next. I had to keep reminding them between houses what they were supposed to do.

When I was a kid, we used to freakin' scream "trick or treat!"
Iggy • Nov 1, 2006 11:44 am
I didn't get any tickertreaters at all, but I live in a second floor apartment with the porch light always on (i.e. the residents don't control it) so there was no way for kids to know that I had candy. And it was really cold last night, so that could be part of it. But I didn't expect anyone anyway. They don't go to the apartments.
xoxoxoBruce • Nov 1, 2006 11:45 am
Maybe there are so used to having everything handed to them the thought of actually going out and working (dress up and extort) for it, depresses them. ;)
wolf • Nov 1, 2006 11:59 am
Apartment complexes used to be the absolute primo ground for candy ... low walk to loot ratio. The place I'm in is probably around 15% occupancy, if my own court is typical, so slim pickings here this year.

There are few kids in the complex currently, so I didn't even bother turn turn on the front door light, which is the magic signal that candy is available. No problem, that just means more fun size bars for me.

I think, though, that what has changed are not children, but parents. Kids still love going from house to house getting enough sugar to power a major city for a month, but their parents won't let them. I know that for at least one of my friend's kids, trick-or-treating meant mommy driving them around to the homes of trusted adults ... her friends, parents, in-laws, and grandparents. Almost doesn't seem worth the effort, does it?

When you were a kid, did your parents take you out, tell you where to go, what to do, how to act and never let you out of sight for a minute?

I was on my own and that was half, or more, of the adventure. Sneaking up on people that could care less, but in my mind being terrorized. Nobody knew where I was or what I was up to, although in truth, the parent/neighbor network was keeping watch.

Now Halloween is run by Home(land) Security......keeps you safe......at a price.;)

Clodfobble • Nov 1, 2006 2:59 pm
I would say at least half the kids at the door this year didn't actually say "trick or treat" at all. Which was irritating to me, you're trick or treating, that's what you say. We also tended to get mostly older kids, in the 8-10 age range, which for me is pushing it as far as trick or treating age goes.
glatt • Nov 1, 2006 3:17 pm

When I was a young tike, yes. But I don't remember how old I was when they cut the strings. Mine are now 4 and 7. The 4 y.o. is too young to be on his own. I'd maybe be OK with the 7 y.o. going out without us if she had an older kid with her.

Times change :( .

We also have more traffic in our neighborhood on Halloween than when I was a kid. I think some kids get ferried in from other neighborhoods. Lots of minivans with kids jumping in and out of them. Crazy.

I saw my wife giving candy to a couple of teenagers, in their street clothes, holding big black trash bags. I was like "What the fuck are you doing?! Did you ask them what they are (dressed as)?!" Then again, I guess you don't want them to come back and burn your house down. Little shits.

Samhain is the best night for divination, you know. Perhaps they'd seen glimpses of their futures, and they were too bummed to enjoy themselves.
xoxoxoBruce • Nov 1, 2006 11:15 pm
There has been a big change in Halloween, the last 10 years. It used to be something kids loved and adults sort of dreaded. Now it's become a big deal for adults....more decorations, cards, costumes, parties.

The side effect is more orchestration and choreographing of the kids activities, which makes them feel they are just along for the ride......just a piece of the adults festivities.

Of course the other thing is safety and there is no doubt parents have to be more careful. They had the nerve to ask me why I painted FREE CANDY on the side of the van with no inside handles. Harumpf.
