I doubt I would be able to walk through one of these even if you paid me. Even reading the website literally made me shudder.

As well as being skittish and easily spooked in general, I have a long standing belief that if I saw something too scary my mind would simply snap and I would spend the rest of my days in a vegetative state. (For the record the Jekyll & Hyde family restaurant in New York freaked me out... to the disgust of the children who entered at the same time as us)

So saying, I spent hours sitting in a bar in Blackpool where the haunted house exited, laughing in sheer delight at the people who piled out, terrifed. I'd love to have a window on a haunted house, just to watch people braver than me running scared.

Edited to add - I've just seen that 7 Floors of Hell has a Haunted Circus. That means.... killer clowns.... right? I'm going to have to hide under my desk now.

I just have one word to say to you:

I've yet to go through a haunted house that actually scared me. I've had them raise my blood pressure and get me tense, waiting for the next goon to go "blearghhgh". But without fail, all they make me feel is the urge to punch the monsters in the mouth (not that I could cause any physical harm, what with the arthritis and all). It feels weird being herded through there though.

I would get a lot more scared if the place was empty and people weren't screaming, and they only had someone jump out on random occasions -- like once a week. Empty haunted houses are creepy.

And this would be the house band. I have the cd, and it's freaky as anything. A couple reviews:

this cd would go well with a bottle of whiskey on a moonlit night behind the animal cages of the traveling circus.... it really brings images of a carnival to mind...

Where do I begin? The accordion, using meat as percussion...?

This is music from a dark, seedy cabaret, or perhaps a warped little carnival in some parallel world of darkness.

You just reminded me why I stopped going after the age of 16! All the screaming and yelling. The tenseness. It is all comming back to me now. :right:

It WOULD be very cool to be alone in one of those places with just the hint of someone there but not being annoying and over dramatic.

i remember on cable they had this show where they sent regular people (youse and meese) to "authentic" haunted estates.... usually in europe. left them there (with camera crew?) and filmed the events of their night. creepy stuff.

of course nothing from Kansas would be on that list...LMAO...imagine that. They do have some pretty good multi-story one's up in KC though...they're just not that scary :(

I have a book called "Haunted Leicester" - if anyone is ever in this part of the world I'll take you on a tour of supposed sites of hauntings. I daren't go alone.

I recommend the Haunted London walking tours to anyone there. We might not be able to match the special effects of US "Haunted Houses" but we have a capital city steeped in bloody history :)

My wheelchair never fits in them.
All going accomplishes does is makes them feel bad.

I've started thinking of Halloween now that the leaves are falling.
Even though the temp today is 28 degrees and set to continue into October!

And as I was arsing about I found this thread.
Wondered if anyone had been to any of these places, or had a personal experience with this kind of place.
I am looking to be scared vicariously.
monster • Sep 29, 2011 1:36 pm
Absolutely no fucking way in any form of hell will I go in one of those. jus' sayin'
Sundae • Sep 29, 2011 1:44 pm
Yeah, me too.
Ghost Stories (Cellar link) was my limit.
infinite monkey • Sep 29, 2011 1:50 pm
Are you guys talking about fakey fun haunted houses or houses that are supposed to be really haunted?

I'd love to go to one. It's been years. A fake one, I mean. A 'real' one? I could be persuaded.
Sundae • Sep 29, 2011 2:07 pm
For me?
BOTH.

See my earlier post. I am like un unbroken colt - skittish and easily spooked.
I can scare myself just in my own head; once an outside agency is involved I will scream. Really loudly. Without the relief of laughter afterwards. I will scream for eternity like a madwoman.

Or so I suspect.

ETA - the houses mentioned do not look like fun to me.
But yes, they are fake.
I might be better off in a real place, as I honestly do not believe in an afterlife.
monster • Sep 29, 2011 2:17 pm
I don't believe in ghosts so I'd happily go to a real haunted house. But fake haunted houses. no way. nuh-huh. not happening.
monster • Sep 29, 2011 2:18 pm
Actually i did make it through the one at Disneyland.

But that was for little kids so no-one jumped out at you
Sundae • Sep 29, 2011 2:27 pm
Monster, when you get international sponsorship, I'll spend the night in a real haunted house with you.

We're both sceptics, but I'll be the shrieky one.

We can tie it in with a programme/ book about ex-pats vs stay-behinds.
Or those who love the Barrowman and those who don't.
Or kids vs cats.

You know the score - nothing about "real" people is complete without some sort of ideological conflict.

Don't do it, Sundae. Trust me. They go for the skeptics first.
Sundae • Sep 29, 2011 3:51 pm
Argh!
In that case I wonder if Diz is "their" agent, as he jumps on me near every night, waking me up.

Although sometimes I wake myself up, trying to scream.
I call that a nightmare, although I know other people are more fluid in their definition.
I haven't had one for months now.

I have been in real haunted houses on a number of occasions, and fun ones only occasionally.

Friends of mine operate a haunt for the homeless at Halloween. They rip their house to pieces to bring this off.

whaaaaat?? I've been to these places (well, been through the neighborhood of Hamiliton Middle school, and I've been to parks in Kenmore, don't remember if that was the one, but it's a small area).

Really? These are spooky places in your neighborhood? Wow. I've been so, ignorant, so insensitive. So carefree. Now I will live in fear.

Great. Thanks.

I actually was just reading about this on Yahoo this morning. I haven't been here yet and honestly, I don't think I want to go either.

http://news.yahoo.com/clinton-road-jersey-most-terrifying-road-u-194000764.html?bouchon=501,ny

Clinton Road, New Jersey: The most terrifying road in the U.S.

About seven years ago, my cousin Julie and her husband Mark moved back to New Jersey from South Carolina. After months of searching, they found a great house in West Milford, New Jersey. Julie, who I grew up with, called me and asked me to meet them at the house and let them know my opinion.
After checking out a map online, I saw the home was on a street just off Clinton Road north of Route 23. I drove up Green Pond Road, got onto Route 23, and then turned right onto Clinton Road. Almost immediately, I noticed that Clinton Road was different from almost all the roads in New Jersey.
There were no homes along the road and no connecting roads. Clinton Road was very curvy and kept winding around between different bodies of water. At one point, I saw what looked like shack off to the right along a dirt driveway, and later on, I saw an old kiln by the road. But other than that, there was nothing along Clinton Road. Isolation was the word that came to my mind to describe the road.
After about 10 miles, I reached the street off Clinton Road where the house was. The house was great, with four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a finished basement. It was perfect for Julie, Mark, and their kids. While looking at the house, I mentioned how creepy Clinton Road was. Julie's realtor shot me a look and looked like she wanted say something not particularly nice to me, but she said nothing.
On the way home, I went down Clinton Road just as it was getting dark. I had not gone more than a couple miles down the road when headlights appeared out of nowhere behind me. The headlights came right up behind me and then backed off. I was not in a hurry, so I slowed down and put my blinker on to let the vehicle pass, but the headlights also slowed. The headlights kept following me down Clinton Road until I got near Route 23, and then suddenly, the headlights disappeared.
A few weeks later, Julie invited me and another cousin of ours, Mike, back to the house. They had made an offer on the property, and it was accepted, so they were having a little party one night after work. Mike and I drove up Clinton Road to get to the house. Within a mile of turning on Clinton Road, headlights again appeared out of nowhere and rushed up to us, but then backed off. I told Mike the same thing happened the first time on the road.
The headlights kept following us, and I was keeping an eye on them in the rearview mirror when Mike shouted, "Look out!" I hit the brakes and saw something like a giant white rabbit running off into the woods. Mike asked what it was, and I told him it was likely an albino deer. I had worked at the fenced-in Hercules complex in Roxbury, New Jersey, for a few years, and there was an albino deer on the grounds then. It would look like a lot of different things when it ran around at night.
As we finally approached some lights in the distance, the headlights behind us vanished as if they were never there. We went into the house and it was pretty cold, as the heat didn't work. Mike told everyone about the headlights and the creature that ran in front of us on Clinton Road. One of the neighbors Julie and Mark had met and invited over, John, came over at the mention of Clinton Road.
"Clinton Road," he said, "is the most haunted road in America." John told us he had lived in West Milford his whole life and that Clinton Road was to be avoided at all costs. He told us a frozen dead body had been found along the road a few years ago. Clinton Road was where the mob dumped their dead bodies. He said that Satan worshipers would also gather along the road and then row out to an island in the middle of one of the lakes and perform satanic rituals.
He also said that strange creatures lived along Clinton Road. They were the result of interbreeding between the local animals and the wild animals that escaped from Jungle Habitat, which was a wild animal amusement park located in West Milford that was run by Warner Brothers in the 1970s. After Warner Brothers closed the park in late 1976, they were rumored to have let a lot of the animals just go into the local woods rather than pay to have them transported somewhere else.
He told us the headlights we had seen were from ghosts that would appear out of nowhere and follow cars along the road at night. That's why the headlights suddenly appeared and disappeared. Mike and I laughed at what the neighbor told us, but we also asked him for another road to take out of there. He told us to take Union Valley Road, which paralleled Clinton Road and was not haunted.
When I got home that night, I went on the Internet and typed in "Clinton Road" in Google. I was amazed to find that Clinton Road was pretty famous as a haunted road. The frozen dead body story was true, the result of a serial mob killer nicknamed The Iceman who used to freeze his victims before dumping them. Jungle Habitat in West Milford was also real. I found tons of stories relating how terrifying Clinton Road is online. The Travel Channel did a show about Clinton Road, calling it the most terrifying road in America. Others have made scary videos about Clinton Road and posted them on YouTube.
In the end, Julie and Mark did not buy the house in West Milford because the home inspection turned up too many problems, including the heating problem. I was relieved to hear that because I did not want to have to travel along the most terrifying road in America, Clinton Road, to see them. But for anyone out there who wants to be scared to death, Clinton Road can be reached right off Route 23 in Newfoundland, New Jersey. The road runs about 10 miles between Newfoundland and West Milford.
If you do drive along Clinton Road though, you do so at your own risk. It is just a creepy, scary, isolated road. You have been warned by someone who has been there.

Glad you enjoyed it. Did you know that Jersey has it's own devil too?Image

The Jersey Devil

The Jersey Devil, the supposed mythical creature of the New Jersey Pinelands, has haunted New Jersey and the surrounding areas for the past 260 years. This entity has been seen by over 2,000 witnesses over this period. It has terrorized towns and caused factories and schools to close down, yet many people believe that the Jersey Devil is a legend, a mythical beast, that originated from the folklore of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Others disagree with this point of view. The following text will show there is evidence to support the existence of an animal or supernatural bring known as the Jersey Devil. The evidence consists of the stories of the Jersey Devil's origin, the sightings of it, and finally, the theories on it.

I lived in central jersey for three years. Its actually a beautiful state. The northern part was ruined by the New York overflow. The southern beaches are great when the tourists (NY'ers) are gone. The oceans have been over-fished by people who just wanna catch and kill as many as they can with little regard for sport. Did I miss anything?

ETA - Oh wait - its got great gas prices!

One of the comments said they were reacting to a "speeding car" coming straight at them.

It's pitch black, they are holding on to one another as they shuffle blindly forward, and then a pair of headlights comes straight at them, probably with a roaring engine sound too.
