September 29, 2006: Entertaining pigs

The Royal Melbourne Show, in the city of the same name, is where the original IotD diving pig came from. Here it is this year and the pigs are racing. I believe we've had racing pigs before, but none so impressive.

Image

They still have diving in Melbourne. Now, interestingly...

Image

This shot showed up in Yahoo!'s Most Emailed images, and it turns out to be from a diving pig exhibition...

Image

In Nanjing, China! Uhh... is that pig tattooed?

Image

Meanwhile in Deerfield, NH, it's the "Pig Scramble". The kids have three minutes to catch one of the piglets in a ring and get it into the bag.

Image

I'm sure they'd rather be diving.

I dunno, it looks like the kids are having fun... ;)

I always wished to have a pig...but then my older brother moved back in...be careful what you wish for.
Elspode • Sep 29, 2006 2:42 pm
I was expecting to see an audience of pigs watching some sort of performance...
axlrosen • Sep 29, 2006 3:09 pm
Wow, nice list Emrikol. It looks like the rounding-the-bend photo has been well-established as the pig race money shot.

PS

I am never, ever eating pork products again.

And this time I mean it.

While reading Charlettes Web did anyone else catch themselves thinking "these farmers are the dumbest people on the planet" ?
Pancake Man • Sep 29, 2006 3:56 pm

Great, now I have an idea for a restaurant...new BBQ place to be called "Cute Enought to Eat". Our motto:
"We serve only the finest racing and diving pigs here!"

It could be like the lobsters in some resturaunts, where you choose your own greased piglet, and chase it down!
capnhowdy • Sep 29, 2006 8:21 pm
I like me some pigs.

In the first image they're swapping paint in the first turn.

Aw, shucks. And from the title I thought I'd be viewing images of methods used to entertain pigs. Intelligent animals, get bored easily. Must be why I'm so easily amused, rarely bored.

Me too, I was imagining the poor grad student resposible for figuring out what pigs like to watch on TV.
spooke • Oct 1, 2006 6:22 am
Can I just add that we have the pig racing and pig diving at the Royal Adelaide Show too. Our show takes place a couple of weeks before they get it in Melbourne.

Apparently the pigs are all "specially trained" to race and dive. It's quite a sight to watch them race up the ramp and quite happily dive into the water! They clearly enjoy it.

UT, if you die before me I am going to petition for your beatification, for your services in the are of pig viewing pleasure.

Either that or get a PayPal account one day and send you some money!
xoxoxoBruce • Oct 1, 2006 8:37 am
You don't need a paypal account. He has the account, all you need is a credit card. Or you could send naked pictures he could sell. ;)
Sundae • Oct 1, 2006 9:25 am

Now there's a heck of a signature line.

Can anyone help? I'd love to get a higher resolution image of that gorgeous photo on top of the page, with the two racing pigs side by side. As someone that races motocross, these guys so remind me of this great sport. This truly is a beautiful image that I'd love to be able to print. I understand this took place in Australia. Any hints as to who posted it and/or how I can get in touch with the author?
Griff • Oct 9, 2006 8:11 am
Click on Undertoad and send him a message he'll point you toward his source if he can.
Undertoad • Oct 9, 2006 8:21 am
These are pretty much wire service images I think.
xoxoxoBruce • Oct 9, 2006 6:33 pm
Hi Biking Guy, try Googling pig racing, look for links to the outfits that train and race them, then look for a gallery on their sites.
And welcome to the Cellar. :D
