Maynard Ferguson Dead At Age 78

I actually watched Rocky last night and heard Maynard hit those notes one more time. He used to play with a local vibraphone guy around here but I'm blanking on his name. He had a nice run.

I actually got to see him in a small venue years ago. Good stuff. I'm sorry to see him go.

It's a sad week for music. Bruce Gary, the original drummer for the Knack, died on Tuesday of lymphoma. He was only 55.

You can probably close your eyes and hear his distinctive drumming from "My Sharona." I think he deserves most of the credit for that song's popularity.

Maynard Ferguson was one of my favorite jazz musicians. All the trumpet players in my high school wanted to have his chops.

I'll have to grub through the CD box and find Conquistador. I have about a half-dozen of his albums on vinyl that I haven't heard in 25 years.

Slam Stewart was the guy from Binghamton. Wow, hadn't thought of Conquistador in moons.
