As much as I hate the personality of Washington, it is a great place to check out as a tourist.
--The National Zoo (they have 2 new pandas)
--The Smithsonian (and you might as well just take one day to check out all their museums)
--The Mall (which includes the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Vietnam Wall)
--The Capitol
--The White House
--Arlington National Cemetery (and have good walking shoes--lots of walking, lots of hills)
--Rock Creek Park
--Georgetown, Adams-Morgan, and K Street (the hip and happening spots in the city)
--Embassy Row (along Mass. Ave. NW)
--Bethesda (make sure to eat at BD's Mongolian Barbeque)
--College Park
--The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception (one of the most beautiful churches in the world)
--U Street
--Riding Metrorail (which puts most public transit systems to shame)
--Alexandria
--Eastern Market
--Union Station
