A Not-So-Polite Introduction

...just kidding. But I do want to say hey, glad to be here. I read the Cellar's creed, was shocked by a feeling reminiscent of living in a democracy (how long it's been), and immediately joined.

That's just crap. The real reason I'm here is because I was researching an artist by the name of Pearce Bates and one of the few links led to xoxoxoBruce, here where we are all better than everyone.

Ok...so it's a combination of both. Bottom line, it's a comfortable mix...at least for my kind.

Stop by, say hello.

it will probably bug him that i got to say welcome before he did, too.

welcome!
footfootfoot • Jun 9, 2006 10:02 pm
Yeah but it will piss you off when he gives JQ the quiz and you didn't even think of it.
zippyt • Jun 9, 2006 10:26 pm
QUIZ QUIZ QUIZ !!!!!!!
jonesieQ • Jun 9, 2006 10:33 pm
Ok, I got the bait....what's the quiz??
xoxoxoBruce • Jun 9, 2006 11:44 pm
Gosh, I don't think I've ever been Bates to attract newbies before.

Well, maybe when I ran the motel.:speechls:
wolf • Jun 10, 2006 12:01 am
You came into this with your eyes open, apparently, so welcome.
farfromhome • Jun 10, 2006 12:47 am
It will only get worse.
wolf • Jun 10, 2006 12:53 am
Oh, wait, shit. "Not so polite."

Good to fuckin' meetcha.
Elspode • Jun 10, 2006 12:55 am
Howdy, Jonesie. Come on in, the lunacy's just fine.
jonesieQ • Jun 10, 2006 1:44 am
Good tactic Bruce...and to think the old line/joke was "why don't you come up and see my etchings?" And lookie here...it worked!

And the only way to board this train is with closed eyes, plugged nose and one final leap into the welcome warmth of fine lunacy. Fuckin' nice to meetchyall too.

And it'd better get worse or I'm not hangin' around.

Darling, we've talked about this before. You've got to want to stop.

So why were you looking up Bates?
jonesieQ • Jun 10, 2006 8:00 pm
Bought a lithograph - '50s, abstract. Arrived today, and it is excellent. I saw the image you posted of "Real Blues" - this guy's pretty good. I'll get a shot of this one, "Gambit", and post it. Let me know what you think.
xoxoxoBruce • Jun 10, 2006 9:14 pm
Is he still alive? Does he have a website? Where are you finding the stuff?
jonesieQ • Jun 10, 2006 10:27 pm
Finding what stuff? His work? I only have one...but I'm definitely going to try to track down more. I have no clue if he's alive, and no website. In fact, there's so little info out there I'm finding it a little hard to believe. There must be some source somewhere. Let me know if you come across any info -I'll do the same.
xoxoxoBruce • Jun 10, 2006 10:31 pm
I bought mine 25 years ago. An online search, when I was puting them in DoDads, only came up with an illustrated fishing book for that name. :(
jonesieQ • Jun 10, 2006 10:38 pm
Same here, but I'll bet he worked for a company or in academia maybe, which is why he's not coming up under PB. His skill must have been in use in some capacity - his stuff is clearly professional. And I saw samples of his fishing book illustrations...a little "brief" you might say...and the author references him as if he's well known in his field so I imagine there's some info out there.
xoxoxoBruce • Jun 10, 2006 10:59 pm
The gallery I bought them from was owned by a friends father. The only thing he told me is Bates was from NY state. Now he's dead and the business gone so I can't backtrack. :headshake
jonesieQ • Jun 11, 2006 1:46 pm
Good to know NY...I'll try to track him that way. I took a pic of the litho - I'll try to post it.
jonesieQ • Jun 11, 2006 2:08 pm
:) #1 in my new collection of Pearce Bates...now I just have to find the rest.
xoxoxoBruce • Jun 11, 2006 7:35 pm
Nice. Much different than most of mine. Is it numbered?

This one is 11/75. Seems PB had multiple styles and techniques. There's one on eBay right now (but I'm pretty sure it's a remarque - a later edition) that's really good but the sellers have it priced at $225. + 40. ship which is way out of range for an unknown. It does have a "best offer" option but what I would offer would be too embarrassing  so I'm just watching it to see what happens. Take a look. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7415213447&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1
xoxoxoBruce • Jun 12, 2006 12:02 pm
None of mine have that Pb mark, must be a later gimmick.

From a Google cached 2002 auction "Pearce Bates Wood Block Prints from Duncannon, PA area"........Hmmmm

That same print is up for a starting bid of $50.
jonesieQ • Jun 12, 2006 5:54 pm
Whoa...you're good. Now I'm going to have to go find out about Live Auctions (never done one). Could be a good deal! I contacted the seller of the one I linked here and asked about the Pb. He gave me some good information. I was misinformed (looking back and reconsidering the source, I should've known!) about remarques...they are usually small squares in the margin where the artist draws a detailed sketch, usually of one thing in the print, apparently to get a feel for or test the sharpness of the burr (etching tool). They raise the value of a print. The red Pb in the duck print is just his in-plate monogram... weird...I'm used to seeing them in either of the bottom corners, in black, where they blend in. I guess monogramming is random, maybe depends on the artist. There isn't one in my litho. I also just found a link to "art" definitions http://www.christcenteredmall.com/stores/art/definitions.htm - very strange source for that kind of info...:eyebrow:...but as long as the info's good, who cares.
DanaC • Jun 12, 2006 6:25 pm
What happened to the quiz?
xoxoxoBruce • Jun 12, 2006 10:17 pm
I hi-jacked the thread, DanaC, and bored everyone away. :D

The dealer that sold mine said Bates was fro NY state but everything I see points to PA. The newest reference is illustrating a book published in 2001.
Pearce Bates may be a fictitious name though.
