IotD had the first face transplant patient but this guy, apparently the second, has received less attention from the world. It happened in China, where the guy lost much of his face in a bear attack.

As in the case of the first transplant, docs aren't so worried about whether it'll "take" as they are how the guy will deal with the psychological problems of suddenly looking very different.

They aren't making as big a deal about this guy because, face it (heh), there are a lot of Chinese people, and if you reported on every single one there'd be no other news. And honestly, in the states at least, how big a market is there on China? Chinese news is only reported there when a mine collapses or something, or if their president is in the states.

How could he face psychological problems from looking different, when they all look alike?

(now that I've gotten that out of the way ... an intact transplanted face has got to be a major improvement on what he's looked like since the bear attack.)

Man, I would hate to have to do that. Get up and look in the mirror, and get the shock of your life. Fun experiment: Wear a halloween mask overnite, and see if you immediately recognize yourself the next morn.

That's why all they should limit all these face transplants to celebrities, who are all so psychologically damaged already that the post-transplant issues would not matter.

If that was me I'd have to be on benzodiazepams for the duration of my natural life. so many time the IotD reminds me how very, very fortunate I am.
