It's bands anyway.

Nominate your favorite rock acts. The nominations are part of the seeding, so don't just list - take your top 10. If others have already mentioned bands you like, you can second them. Seconding goes into the seeding too.

Duran Duran 2nded - saw them 3 years ago
Cyclefrance • Apr 17, 2006 5:52 am
Sorry about the tears down the trouserleg - ur probably right about Wham, altho Georgie boy deserves a mention - and I shouldn't have listed so many, but getting up to 64 looked like a heavy task so there's gonna be a few lightweights in there that would doubtkess disappear quite quickly...

Surprising how quickly groups come and go though - there are quite a few from the 70's, 80's and 90's that I haven't mentioned but can add if necessary because of a shortfall - always steering clear as much as possible from New Romantics that will generally not fit in that well....

PS - at least I remembered INXS:p

Nominations will remain open until there are no nominations or seconds for a while. Since the place is slow, there could be some folks who aren't reading all the threads, who would want to participate... as long as we don't get re-farked soon, the performance problems should die down soon.

I'm thinking after we've done 64 of them, we can then have a meta-field of 64 and pit them all against each other.

Seeding might be a bitch though.

did I say that already?

Buddy Holly inspired John Lennon and the early skiffle Quarrymen (including McCartney) ....

so, i guess even though the Beatles and Stones raped the music field with "Britsh pop blues"

OK

second the bloomming bloodsucking bastard BEATLES (the stones would be a followup, but they just tagged alone and tried to be different)

Ladies and Gentlemen... your Rock Bands Cellar Field of 64

Take a breath, look over the selections... they have been seeded carefully for your maximum enjoyment.

So many of the top seeds were British that I put mostly Americans into the West. Major Aussie seeds go in the South of course.

Help me out, somebody. This is the first 64 I've participated in ... how/where do we vote?
Undertoad • Apr 18, 2006 9:26 pm
Well the first round is usually pretty grueling since there are 32 matches to play. What happens is that we go in order, I announce the beginning of the match in my post by writing
"such-n-such
vs
so-n-so"

And then you post your vote.

My guess is this will be more popular than landmarks, and so let's go with best-of-5, repeat voting allowed.

Since it's best-of-five, once three votes are recorded for a side, no need to vote further. You may record your pleasure or displeasure with a result, and you may argue for a side during a match.

As always I am the Final Arbiter, and am drunk with power over what is clearly nothing more than a friendly competition.

Let the games begin with my next post.

A revote is voting in back to back matches. In the past they have been banned at times and been allowed at other times. They are allowed now.

vote: Sex Pistols

Sure, the Yardbirds spawned other great bands and solo acts, but they were nothing special themselves. (At least not compared to the likes of Queen, anyway.) Without using Google, name 3 songs that the Yardbirds are famous for.

Neck and neck - difficult one to decide. Duran Duran have show they have longevity and they still cut a good gig, whereas Green day have established themselves as a poetnt force quite quickly - a bit like Franz Ferdinand. I'm not sure either will go the whole distance but have to stick with the stalwarts who brough some lively stuff into the New Romantics era. Im sure some will disagree but I go with:

Duran Duran

PS - glad to see Santana made it through - Carlos is the man!

here's the deal: (sky and .....oh wait. i was gonna say Ibram, but he/she did vote a few posts back........anyway, for those of you who are confused by this thread, i'll remind you of the flow)

Undertoad is the MC.

there is a bracket linked in occaisionally in his posts (seems to be when there is a victory announced)

that bracket lists all of the matchups. UT announces the next match up, and the first band to get the majority vote wins the round and advances.
this round is 3 of 5.

so, when you see people voting, look back in the thread for Undertoad's post announcing the match, count the votes for each band, and determine if you should vote or not. also, only vote for the bands that are currently being matched, please. Not that it's a problem or anything, you just look like a tool. It's really quite simple.

what really bugs me is that this post was the kind of thing we had BigV, master of the obvious around for. he had the patience and time for this shit.

Ibby • Apr 25, 2006 5:47 am
Queen had Freddie. The Doors had an acid burnout who wrote quasi-intellectual poppycock. Thats not to say I don't like them, but Queen just pwnz them. And nobody can write a song (or an album) like Rodger Waters, and only about five people can play guitar on the level of David Gilmour. The Who's songs don't speak to me (get it? Speak To Me? get it? get it?) like Wish You Were Here, or any of the songs off The Wall, or Pigs On The Wing...

Back in 1972, the Beatles WERE MUZAK. Progressive Rock got no air play on the radio. I got tired of people asking me why I didn't like the Beatles like everyone else did. They thought I listened to obscure stuff: Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Gryphon, Trimvirat, Renaissance --- that was when you used a lower-case 'a' in 'alternative'.

Nonsense...I am a huge Prog Rock fan, and I've never thought the Beatles to be Muzak. Hell, I think Glenn Miller was a genius, I can't get enough Nat King Cole and I practically worship Scott Joplin. None of that ever stopped me from blasting out "Selling England by the Pound", though.

I suppose that I hold the Mop Tops as something of a rarified quantity, though. In my own mind, they are above most others in terms of cultural significance, and quantity and consistency of quality.

But, as a teenager in 1972, The Beatles == Britney Spears. ALL commercial stations were ONLY TOP-40. It was horrible.

To me, Prog was post-Beatles Rock. Much more sophisticated. Learn from their ansestors, and brought Rock to the Next Level.

Pink Floyd (formed in 1965 in Cambridge, England) is an English rock band, noted for progressive compositions, philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, cover art and elaborate live shows. The group is one of rock music's most successful and influential acts, believed to have sold an estimated 73.5 million albums in the U.S.,[1] and over 200 million albums worldwide.[2]

Pink Floyd enjoyed moderate success in the late 1960s as a psychedelic band led by Syd Barrett. Barrett's erratic behaviour caused his colleagues to replace him with guitarist David Gilmour and the band went on to record several elaborate concept albums, achieving worldwide success with 1973's Dark Side of the Moon, 1975's Wish You Were Here and 1979's The Wall, among the best-selling, most critically acclaimed, and enduringly popular albums in rock music history.

-------------------

The Grateful Dead was an American psychedelia-influenced rock band formed in 1965 in San Francisco. The band was known for its unique and eclectic songwriting style—which fused elements of rock, folk music, bluegrass, blues, country, and jazz—and for live performances of long modal jams.

The Grateful Dead began their career in Palo Alto, California as "The Warlocks" ... After meeting their new manager Rock Scully, they moved to the Haight-Ashbury section of San Francisco. Many bands from this area, such as Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother & the Holding Company, and Santana, went on to national fame, giving San Francisco an image as a center for the hippie counterculture of the era.

Back to the Stones for a minute, I thought their Super Bowl performance sucked. Last year's Paul McCartney thing was canned and boring. Janet Jackson single breastedly set back Super Bowl halftime shows 50 years.

The last decent Super Bowl halftime music was Gwen, No Doubt, and Sting. "Message in a Bottle" with Sting and Gwen singing and No Doubt playing the instrumentals was terrific. A month later Gwen inducts The Police into the Rock Hall of Fame.

If the NFL can't do a decent Super Bowl halftime music act anymore, just cancel the friggin thing. Focus on the football game for Peet's Coffee sake. Enough washed up English acts. Shit, Detroit, Motown, they could have done much better.

Since 2000?

Have there been 64 films since 2000 that you would describe as "good?"
Cyclefrance • Apr 27, 2006 10:03 am
I'm easily pleased!
Cyclefrance • Apr 27, 2006 10:08 am
Well there's:

the Bond movies.
Lord of the Rings trilogy
Toy Story duo
Titanic and other ones with either Di Caprio or Winslet
The Producers
Bruce Willis stuff (Die Hard, Sixth Sense, Hostage, etc)
Tom Hanks efforts (Private Ryan, that one with the guy in the Airport, Castaway)

and I'm only scratching the surface...

I don't know what this means, but I always thought these field of 64 games were fun.

Yeah I want to improve the whole thing, give people other ways to vote, let people set up their own tournaments, that sort of thing.

We do this a lot in the bathroom stalls at school, except it tends to just be one of the cardinal brackets and the playoffs/finals never get done. Which maybe is somehow reflective of the mental state around here.

But, the part I always enjoy most is how abstract it gets when you ignore categories. Like infinite blowjobs versus the kiln technician vs salad, or something.

On the other hand I'm not sure how much encouragement the cellar really needs towards resembling bathroom walls.
