Fourth Cellar Field of 64: Rock bands
you read it....
Who are they?
(*of course this is a wide spec.... porn actors, political actor, humorous, drama actors,
Are the actors man or woman?, do they make you think or emotive?
could you watch an indie movie with no language you can understand and vote for that attempt)?
wouldn't this be the 4th field of 64? or the 2nd 3rd field of 64?
Damn straight, LJ!!
the 4th call!!
Traditionally we have suggestions for bracket fillers. Yay or nay
Lynyrd Skynyrd
The Rolling Stones
The Beatles
The Allman Bros
hhahahahahhahahahaha
ok, Marylin Manson
It's bands anyway.
Nominate your favorite rock acts. The nominations are part of the seeding, so don't just list - take your top 10. If others have already mentioned bands you like, you can second them. Seconding goes into the seeding too.

Can i puleeze PML @ Wham....sorry Cyclefrance (I do have their albums though) but I have decided you have good taste for an ...err...old guy :p
Duran Duran 2nded - saw them 3 years ago
Sorry about the tears down the trouserleg - ur probably right about Wham, altho Georgie boy deserves a mention - and I shouldn't have listed so many, but getting up to 64 looked like a heavy task so there's gonna be a few lightweights in there that would doubtkess disappear quite quickly...
Surprising how quickly groups come and go though - there are quite a few from the 70's, 80's and 90's that I haven't mentioned but can add if necessary because of a shortfall - always steering clear as much as possible from New Romantics that will generally not fit in that well....
PS - at least I remembered INXS:p
Also want to second for seeding purposes
Beatles
The Who
Rolling Stones
Jimi Hendrix
Aerosmith
I do feel a bit bad that I forgot INXS, but shit happens.

I seconded "yes"
I also sencond "Grateful Dead".... those whacky druggies went for years on tour with millions of fans.... AND with no "produced" albums...
They only wanted quality bootlegs of their concerts.
If i were to approach Garcia and ask them to sign my pirated copy(s)
(unlike Metallica) they would.
FWIW it's bands, individuals will not be counted, unless there is a ruckus and people demand it.
Ok, then.
David Bowie and the Spiders from Mars
Elvis Costello and the Attractions
If i were to approach Garcia and ask them to sign my pirated copy(s)
(unlike Metallica) they would.
How can a dead guy (as opposed to a Dead Guy) sign a copy?
Time for two late arrivals?
ELO (Eledctric Light Orchestra)
Eurythmics
and for the obligatory group:
James Brown and the Flames
Nominations will remain open until there are no nominations or seconds for a while. Since the place is slow, there could be some folks who aren't reading all the threads, who would want to participate... as long as we don't get re-farked soon, the performance problems should die down soon.
U2
Duran Duran
INXS
Simple Minds
wouldn't this be the 4th field of 64? or the 2nd 3rd field of 64?
I'm thinking after we've done 64 of them, we can then have a meta-field of 64 and pit them all against each other.
Seeding might be a bitch though.
seeding sounds dirty....
did I say that already?
Buddy Holly inspired John Lennon and the early skiffle Quarrymen (including McCartney) ....
so, i guess even though the Beatles and Stones raped the music field with "Britsh pop blues"
OK
second the bloomming bloodsucking bastard BEATLES (the stones would be a followup, but they just tagged alone and tried to be different)
mmmmm..... talking of seeds.... how about the 3 seeds of the brit '60 rock movement.....
Yardbirds
John Mayalls BluesBreakers
Alexis Korner Set
Second BluesBreakers
oh, yeah - Jefferson Starship nee Airplane
Janis Joplin
Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen (joke)
Dianna Ross and the Supremes (we need to honor Mo' town, as well)
I'm gonna second Red Hot Chili Peppers so they at least make the field.
I'll 2nd RHCP too, they really do rock.
Can Machine Gun Fellatio get a look in?? Bet no one else really knows them.
Time for some mop up duty (didn't see these mentioned yet)
Steely Dan
Doobie Brothers
James Gang/Joe Walsh
Eagles
Blue Oyster Cult
Buffalo Springfield
Dead Can Dance
Pink Floyd
Santana
Bruce Springsteen
Creed
Creedance Clear Water Revival
@ Beestie, your post reminded me....did you ever hear the James Gang after Joe Walsh split? haahahah, it just wasn't the same without his vocals/guitar.
BTW did ya see Eric Claptons Crossroads Guitar Fest (in Dallas,Tx) DVD? I thought it was a hoot in that it was a 3 day benefit concert for Alchohol Abuse... and Joe Walsh was one of the main head liners .... lol.

The first 56 positions are set. The following bands have not made it. The first 8 seconds from this grouping will make the final positions in the seeding. To avoid one voter having too much sway, please do not nominate more than two bands from this list.

Ladies and Gentlemen... your
Rock Bands Cellar Field of 64
Take a breath, look over the selections... they have been seeded carefully for your maximum enjoyment.
So many of the top seeds were British that I put mostly Americans into the West. Major Aussie seeds go in the South of course.
man. i was about to lose my shit. i came straight to the above post, went to the grid, and saw cake....and not metallica. but then, reading back, saw that i missed the bus...bad timing. oh well.....democracy isnt for everyone.
go zeppelin!
3rd seed, ut, you prick?
No way man it was the voters choice i only pick the division. And I think you think I may have been helpful in that regard if you go back and look at the field.
Help me out, somebody. This is the first 64 I've participated in ... how/where do we vote?
Well the first round is usually pretty grueling since there are 32 matches to play. What happens is that we go in order, I announce the beginning of the match in my post by writing
"such-n-such
vs
so-n-so"
And then you post your vote.
My guess is this will be more popular than landmarks, and so let's go with best-of-5, repeat voting allowed.
Since it's best-of-five, once three votes are recorded for a side, no need to vote further. You may record your pleasure or displeasure with a result, and you may argue for a side during a match.
As always I am the Final Arbiter, and am drunk with power over what is clearly nothing more than a friendly competition.
Let the games begin with my next post.
yeah, i know. i was just funnin ya. zeppelin is so huge that i think many people just assume they'll seed a one, and this whole thing will boil down to zep v. beatles. i was surprised is all. especially to see them seeded behind u2 and black sabbath? cripes. what's wrong with you people!>?#$%@)(*&
There are some unfortunate matchups for some of my favorite bands. Talking Heads vs Clash? R U kidding me? Some other loser band makes it into the sweet sixteen instead of one of those two.
Unanimous for the Pinkster!
no contest.... Pink Floyd...
"... by the way, which one's Pink?"
The Beatles aren't a rock band, they're a Pop Group. I hate zep, but I'm not going to vote for the opposing band unless I actually like the opposing band; otherwise I'll pass. I thought it would come down to Pink Floyd versus U2, but what do I know. See you on the dark side of the moon.
Pink Floyd wins.
10,000 Maniacs (8)
vs
Crosby Stills and Nash (9)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bands10,000 Maniacs
I love Natalie Merchant.
CSN.
The Beatles aren't a rock band but Natalie Merchant is?
And I just realized who I forgot to nominate. Traffic. Not a travesty but still.
10,000 Maniacs is a Folk Rock Band.
CSN is a pop-folk group. They don't play rock.
I love Natalie, too. but 10k maniacs is nowhere near CSN
CSN!
Who.
I can't believe I forgot to second them.
"Won't get fooled again"
Genesis (Gabriel!) ...both are good though
Peter Gabriel's Genesis
A lamb lies down on broadway
It's a moot point now, but Eurythmics over Genesis with Phil Collins. Genesis with PG was a totally different animal.
It's a moot point now, but Eurythmics over Genesis with Phil Collins. Genesis with PG was a totally different animal.
word
hey. wAIT A MINUTE. how in the hell did Van Halen NOT make it into the tournament?
also: CSN should be CSNY. i mean really. there's a big difference.....CSNY includes CSN's work. CSN excludes Mr Young. fix that UT?
hey. wAIT A MINUTE. how in the hell did Van Halen NOT make it into the tournament?
Because it was "best rock bands", not "best imitation of early teen male masturbation with an electric guitar"
But if it were, they would win, hands down.
Phil collins annoys me... I'll go with the girl. Get em Annie
I can see I'll have to stay up late to participate in this - it's all going on during UK beddy-byes time....
Some good pairings UT - hope I'm around f(awake that is) or some of the harder choices...
Genesis wins. (With or without Gabriel! Nobody has put together an album like Trick of the Tail, and Collins' drum sound, which was actually developed for Gabriel's third album, literally defined the 80s.)
REM (6)
vs
Doors (11)
Doors.
how can you even ask?
Doors. (Nothing against REM, though.)
Doors win... score one for the drunken cheesy lounge singer.
Police (3)
vs
DEVO (14)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsPolice - Synchronicity rules
Good point about the fouls. Did I foul? Or are two in a row OK this time?
Feel free to ignore my vote if I fouled.
I think it should only be a foul if Police win without your vote Glatt - that's fair isn't it?
Revotes are allowed this time.
In that case:
ELO - class over arse.
Doors won. Police beat DEVO.
What is a revote? You mean change a vote? Certainly the same person shouldn't vote twice in the same runoff. That seems ridiculous.
What is a revote? You mean change a vote? Certainly the same person shouldn't vote twice in the same runoff. That seems ridiculous.
A revote is voting in back to back matches. In the past they have been banned at times and been allowed at other times. They are allowed now.
vote: Sex Pistols
I think by 'revote' UT means that you can vote for the next pair that immediately follows - this was not permitted in the World Landmarks rules.
I'm going to say Sex Pistols, simply on the basis of impact.
ELO on the basis of not giving me a headache.
Queen will, Queen will, rock you.
Queen.
ouch, that's tough one......
have to the Yardbirds
Sure, the Yardbirds spawned other great bands and solo acts, but they were nothing special themselves. (At least not compared to the likes of Queen, anyway.) Without using Google, name 3 songs that the Yardbirds are famous for.
I can name 10 that Queen is famous for.
(they ARE, afterall, "The Champions")
heart full of soul, still I'm sad, for your love....
no googling involved, evil hearted you.....
OK. Good job. :) I only recognize one of those songs, though. Maybe that says more about me.
Still I'm Sad wasn't a hit this side of the pond... which is one reason why
Queen wins this match
The north division first round is done
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bands
U2 (1)
vs
Misfits (16)
Much as I think Bono acts as if he has a gold bar permanently up his arse it still has to be
U2
<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a387/wiccan33/AAAU2Bloodysunday.jpg" border="0" alt="Image hosting by Photobucket"></a>
U2 (Bloody Sunday)
U2 wins, a blowout
Talking Heads (8)
vs
Clash (9)
Two great bands. RIP Joe Strummer.
Talking Heads (Remain in light)
The world needs more songs about buildings and food as long as we have fear of music.
Talking Heads wins. The 8-9 seed is always difficult.
INXS (5)
vs
Franz Ferdinand (12)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsINXS
(talking heads beat the clash? Daaaaaayam.)
That was a good pairing. I would have gone Heads, but t'would have been tough.
INXS
(talking heads beat the clash? Daaaaaayam.)
Yeah - I wish that had been in the sweet 16 or elite 8. I would have gone with the Clash, but I wouldn't have liked it. :rar:
Franz Ferdinand
this is a protest vote against INXS doing that crappy, crappy "Rock Star" show to find a new lead singer.
FF deserved better, but they are still growing whereas INXS made their mark - maybe next time if they they demonstrate longevity...
INXS wins.
AC/DC (4)
vs
Rush (13)
rush
brilliant musicians. (understatement)
A nice comeback for Rush, and the first upset of the tourney. (But I'm proud.)
Springsteen & E-St Band (6)
vs
Radiohead (11)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsradiohead
In 20 years, they will have mattered more
Springsteen WINS
Led Zeppelin (3)
vs
Blues Traveler (14)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsLed Zeppelin
sucks that blues traveler should fall so early. there are a few really really tough match ups ahead in the west. in round 2 i see hendrix facing jane's addiction, nirvana v. chili peppers.
Zep, of course....
But beats me how you guys can vote out Yardbirds yet vote Lled Zep......
another tougfh one.......
Kinks
Kinks are good but Aerosmith has to get the nod.
aerosmith
for introducting white america to Run DMC
LIv will be pleased, but Ray won't be happy - His Waterloo sun has set....
Aerosmith wins it. I was always pissed at the Kinks for having "Paranoia the Destroyer" use the same riff as "All Day and All of the Night". If you're going to have radio hits, write new songs.
Black Sabbath (2)
vs
Meatloaf (15)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsyeah, i see what cha mean on the same "riff" type thing... Bo Diddly and Chuck Berry were the masters of that, too... (hard to listen to a whole hour of either one)
I guess I'll go Black Sabbath first and Meat second.
Meatloaf, even though they (he) really only had one good album
thump .. thump .. thump .. thump .. I .. AM .. IRON .. MAN
Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath wins
South division first round is over
Beatles (1)
vs
Eagles (16)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsHas to be the Liverpool legends

Violent Femmes (8)
vs

http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsBeatles it is.
I'm shocked. SHOCKED!
no gentle femmes for me.... Violent and Saucy!
Femmes
(that was a difficult one)
TiddyBaby, was that a vote or did it just resemble one?
VIOLENT FEMMES....just in case it wasnt
Violent Femmes win
Pearl Jam (5)
vs
Jethro Tull (12)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsAC/DC
 guess i was way behind on that one
Pearl Jam wins
Rolling Stones (4)
vs
Elvis Costello & the Attractions (13)

mmm...maybe I should change my tag to 'master of bad timing' ...
velvet underground...
(we already did the Beatles... why bother with a 2nd rate tribute band?)
VU takes one
Dire Straits (3)
vs
Santana (14)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsyou wasted the planetary resources to say now't worth hearing, man-who-wears-high-heels?
I concurr.....
'tis a tuff one, nobody can deny Dire Straits deserves to be up there, but then they are up against Santana..argghhh....too hard.
Santana wins. (Subtlety loses)
Duran Duran (7)
vs
Green Day (10)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandssubtel as a brick to the head ...... for a sysop you got a crap taste in music....
green day .....
(the only duran duran worthy of attention was in Barbarella, and if you were paying attention to him then you missed the main feature...)
There was a time in my life when I thought the idea of a bunch of stoners from berkeley was cool.
abstain
green day - for making punk matter again.
Duran
I don't like Dookie
Duran
I don't like Dookie
Too late, we lose. You snooze...
Neck and neck - difficult one to decide. Duran Duran have show they have longevity and they still cut a good gig, whereas Green day have established themselves as a poetnt force quite quickly - a bit like Franz Ferdinand. I'm not sure either will go the whole distance but have to stick with the stalwarts who brough some lively stuff into the New Romantics era. Im sure some will disagree but I go with:
Duran Duran
PS - glad to see Santana made it through - Carlos is the man!
Lots of reasons to choose either....
Gotta go with <strike>Green Day</strike>
Hmmmm instead make it <strike>Duran Duran</strike>
On second thought its <strike>Green Day</strike>
That's it my mind's made up: <strike>Duran Duran</strike>
OK, no more flip-flopping: Green Day
I'd like to have been at the Mudfest Slinging at '94 Woodstock... I think Green Day had a good time with all those chuncks being thrown back and forth....
Green Day.
Sorry lads - it's best of 5 , I think - your Green Days have been have turned into Yester Days....
well, at least they didn't nominate Wham!... (in fact, i've not seen too many losers in the voting chart)
Club Tropicana, drinks are free, la la la-la - sorry, what was that...?
Duran Duran survives.
Yes (2)
vs
Cranberries (15)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsgotto go with Yes, if only for the first couple albums, and the splinter group "Flash" that came out in early '70s.
Yes.
Ok, I am a trader to my generation... But how can I not be? There wasn't much worth listening to in the 90's. Thank god for my mom's album collection.
Duran Duran survives.
Must have been the Reflex-flex-flex-flex
blaaaaa..... I think he gots early altimerezer
or was under duress duress
<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a387/wiccan33/delores.jpg" border="0" alt="Image hosting by Photobucket"></a>
Cranberries
you sodding PUSSIES! It's the Cranberries, dammit!
Duran Duran
Um. Ok. ya dink from outer space.
Sheesh.
Um. Ok. ya dink from outer space.

sorry
that's an apt description though ...

Furiously trying to get my 30-year old bic lighter to light just one more time...
Lynyrd Skynyrd
They don't use lighters at concerts anymore; no one has them these days. Everyone just holds up their lighted cell phones.
my virgin phone has a flashlight built in...
*shines it on Skynard*
Lynyrd Skynyrd wins
Guns n Roses (4)
vs
Deep Purple (13)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsPurple
...... is the colour of my one true love......
Deep Purple doesn't fade.
Red Hot Chili Peppers (6)
vs
Moody Blues (11)
RHCP
This is payback for a poor MB concert experience.
Hmmm.... it's a tough one, but I'll go with the Dead.
FYI Mari: there's no ' in Willys.
Yeah, yeah. Just cuz you got insider car knowledge. Still dances to a Cajun rhythm.
PS The spell check puts the apostrophe in.
Moody Blues
...inventers of the concept album..
Moody Blues (Seriously, how many people are still going to be singing "Give it Away, Now" after 30 years.)
wow, two shocking upsets in a row! guess that's why we play the games, John.
Moodys in a close one.
Nirvana (3)
vs
Coldplay (14)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsnirvana.
you know how i know you're gay?
vote for cold play and i'll tell you.
nirvana.
you know how i know you're gay?
You know how you know that your best friend is gay?
Because his dick tastes like shit... :smack:
Nirrrrrrrrrrrrrrvaaaaaannaaaaaaa!
Spode... I'm crying
as a protest against his cowardly action while troubled teens we're watching.
coldplay.
fuck curt, how many followed his example i wonder
Nirvana wins
Jane's Addiction (7)
vs
John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (10)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsYou just totally don't get this game do you?
I abstain, because I can honestly say that I have never paid attention to either of the two contenders in this round.
You just totally don't get this game do you?
I abstain, because I can honestly say that I have never paid attention to either of the two contenders in this round.
One way to abstain is to register a protest write-in vote.
Moody Blues (Seriously, how many people are still going to be singing "Give it Away, Now" after 30 years.)
Seriously, how many people walk around singing "She loves you ya ya ya" ?
Well, I drive around singing the Cranberries all the time now.
jane's addiction[been caught steeling]
Jane wins
Closing out the first round:
Jimi Hendrix Experience (2)
vs
Dead Can Dance (15)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsi love hendrix, and he'll probably win this, but i have to vote for lisa gerrard
<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a387/wiccan33/dcd1.jpg" border="0" alt="Image hosting by Photobucket"></a>
Hendrix.
EDIT 1: nevermind, i got it
EDIT 2: Why didn't Ziggy and the Spiders get in? I KNOW I saw someone nominate them...
I'll make it interesting and vote for a band that I like: Dead Can Dance.
Who will come forth as the tie breaker?
Hendrix.
EDIT 1: nevermind, i got it
EDIT 2: Why didn't Ziggy and the Spiders get in? I KNOW I saw someone nominate them...
I nominated No Doubt and they didn't get in either. They played the SuperBowl with Sting and toured with the Stones and U2.
Hendrix closes out the first round, best first round we've had.
Second round, continues best-of-five format
Pink Floyd (1)
vs
Crosby Stills and Nash (9)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/admin.php?field=bandsProxy vote for Pete. Go Floyd!
Floyd all the way, though I do love CSN/CSNY...
Floyd easily moves on
Big matches now:
Who (5)
vs
Genesis (4)
Police
(can I vote this many times, UT?)
Yes, voting on consecutive matches is allowed.
I think it was too hard to follow when revoting wasn't allowed.
Doors, only because I haven't heard too much Police.
Doors, because they were my first batch 8-track, (them and BS&T and Steppenwolf and the Guess Who)
I really can't bear to choose between the Doors and the Police.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Pearl Jam
Silverchair
Live
Staind
Audioslave
Goo Goo Dolls
Tonic
The doors are totally over-rated.
My vote is for the Police
The Doors ARE waaaay overrated, but... like I said, I'm a bit Police-deprived.
the police were a good attempt of white people ripping off ska/reggae
The doors were over rated acid-poets
doors
i think sky needs a refresher course. and the other two.....did you vote? wtf?
the other two, who?
I'm only on line now and again... I don't know WHEN to vote, or if its too late, its all over.... I just go by the last post and figure "better say something now, because 3 hours from now, another category will have been up and closed)
The Doors are CLEARLY superior. Clearly.
Whiny synth crap does not compare with "The End".
The Doors. Morrison was a genius, IMO. Fucked up.... but a genius.
the other two, who?
I'm only on line now and again... I don't know WHEN to vote, or if its too late, its all over.... I just go by the last post and figure "better say something now, because 3 hours from now, another category will have been up and closed)
here's the deal: (sky and .....oh wait. i was gonna say Ibram, but he/she did vote a few posts back........anyway, for those of you who are confused by this thread, i'll remind you of the flow)
Undertoad is the MC.
there is a bracket linked in occaisionally in his posts (seems to be when there is a victory announced)
that bracket lists all of the matchups.
UT announces the next match up, and the first band to get the majority vote wins the round and advances.
this round is 3 of 5.
so, when you see people voting, look back in the thread for
Undertoad's post announcing the match, count the votes for each band, and determine if you should vote or not. also, only vote for the bands that are currently being matched, please. Not that it's a problem or anything, you just look like a tool. It's really quite simple.
what really bugs me is that this post was the kind of thing we had
BigV, master of the obvious around for. he had the patience and time for this shit.
The drunken lounge singer moves on.
In a match of sheer irony,
Sex Pistols (10)
vs
Queen (2)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsi don't like queen
sex pistols it is
thank goodness that vote of terrible bands is over. Now we can move on to a vote of two excellent bands.
fuck the idiot flamboyant shits... I don't care
BTW, rockstead, which overproduced pile of shit do you vote for?
no hijack intended but I still can't beleive Paul Rodgers is fronting for Queen. Sorry... carry on
fuck the idiot flamboyant shits... I don't care
BTW, rockstead, which overproduced pile of shit do you vote for?
You didn't understand my post. I didn't vote at all. I'm waiting for the U2/TalkingHeads match up.
Gwen's gonna be mad at me for this, but I have to vote for Talking Heads.
like 'em both.
Voting for U2
What I think about all this COOL editing thing, is while LG (for example ) has a post MYSTERIOUSLY appear before I followed the dialogue.
If I said/asked something... wtw ... Post something three hours later to be in front of whatever I posted back at the REAL time.
(oh wait, maybe,... some seven hours from now, mr peabody will step in his wayback machine and post an "interuptive post" before this one... )
geeez you guys are clowns.
(@ rOCKsteady, yeah,... i know what cha meant... space wasted on those two, when some forethought had could have been two real rock bands, like Lil Richard and Kings of Leon for a duel)
Talking HEads.... (my bad UT)
Talking Heads wins, the first #1 upset of the field.
INXS (5)
vs
Rush (13)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsRush
What the heck did you people do to U2? Shame on you.
oh shit, I'll have to download some songs of each to tell...........
Whos' got $5?
Rush wins
Springsteen & E-St Band (6)
vs
Led Zeppelin (3)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandszep
(damn these quests are flying by)
Well, LJ, we're waiting for your vote.....
on behalf of LJ ,
I vote for Molly Hachet.
Zep flies on.
Aerosmith (10)
vs
Black Sabbath (2)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsSabbath on the rulz
Liz on me tool.
Black S wins:)
Black Sabbath. Aerosmith can't touch 'em.
Black Sabbath wins
Beatles (1)
vs
Violent Femmes (8)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsbeatles, I don't like the violent femmes.
Violent Femmes!
holy snappin duck shit I cant believe some of the bands that have fallen off the wagon....pfffff....bloody timezones!!
Violent Femmes!
holy snappin duck shit I cant believe some of the bands that have fallen off the wagon....pfffff....bloody timezones!!
Yea, like the Cranberries. I love Delores. I was also a Yes groupie in the mid-70s. So, I couldn't bear to vote on that one.
Bono is a Time Person of the Year, but can't get the highest honor at the Cellar. That's what makes this place great; you can't predict.....
damn I missed that one... of course I would have said the fab 4
If I choose to bat for the other team, Gwen Stefani would be top of my list.
Beatles win
Pearl Jam (5)
vs
Rolling Stones (4)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsStones (as much as it pains me to agree with Mari on something, this is important.)
Can I still vote for Sabbath? grr
--------------------
Pearl Jam ...... I guess
Stones (as much as it pains me to agree with Mari on something, this is important.)
OK, fine, Pearl Jam.
Just kidding!
? shit?
How did boy george get entered?
I liked pearl jam... and they even protested the skyrocketing prices of concert tickets, and if they had their way, we'd go back to the "earthier" sounds/tones that comes from LPs (vinyl)
But they come in 2nd to the Stones.
garbage
how did shirley manson get left out?
I don't know, but I sure like Shirley Mansons' see-through top, fishnet hose, and red hair. I need her for a solo job.
(i didn't post the pic because its too large, and i'm too lazy to re-size it)
Stones roll on
Velvet Underground (6)
vs
Santana (14)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsCarlos for me - it's an age thing:
Santana
Velvet Underground, if not David Bowie then I'll have to settle for Lou Reed.
Santana.
Carlos is smooth.
Santana for me, that kid drummer he had in original woodstock blew me away.
Yes, and not just for the album cover artwork.
The affirmative is victorious.
Greatful Dead (1)
vs
Tom Petty & Heartbreakers (8)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsThis one is hard. They are both so good.
But I'll have to vote for the Dead
Yeah Santana!
Yes ( but but blows kisses to Duran)
Tom Petty ! ( come on....so singable)
I actually *prefer* Petty, but I am voting for the Dead out of respect for the sheer enormity of their cultural significance.
Dead live on. (Sorry to keep saying that.) Close... the last shots go in, but are not buzzer-beaters.
Lynyrd Skynyrd (12)
vs
Deep Purple (13)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsEver see the movie Duets? It's not a great movie, but Andre Braugher sings an amazing version of Freebird.
God almighty, the Dead versus Petty is a tough call. I can't help thinking something like Wildflowers versus Terrapin Station (Side Two) . . . impossible to determine. Both are desert island albums.
Lynyrd Skynyrd wins
Moody Blues (11)
vs
Nirvana (3)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsI abstain from casting the deciding vote on this one...
oops.. n/m, jinx beat me to it.
Nirvana wins
finishing out round 2:
Jane's Addiction (7)
vs
Jimi Hendrix Experience (2)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsthis may be the hardest of all the matches to date.
I'm going to go Hendrix here, although i listen to Janes addiction more frequently. only because of historical import.
I don't like to vote against JA, but I gotta go with Hendrix. No doubt about it.
skynyrd
Nirvana
Hendrix
Are late votes alright?
Hendrix passes on...to the next round.
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bands
--- IT IS NOW ROUND 3 ---
We have the sweet sixteen. At this point, due to the high popularity of this particular tournament, we now move to a BEST of NINE format. In this format, FIVE VOTES are required to win the match.
Also in this round I mess up the order and remove the seeding from the match announcement.
Again, five votes to win. Ready:
Doors
vs
Queen
Queen :queen:
(I can't believe you people who fell for the smoke and mirrors of the Doors! Sheesh!)
Queen. Nothing against the Doors, but really. Queen.
Doors. Or did you mean *best of five*, in which case Queen had already won?
Queen!
one for good measure
DOORS
we is stoned........immaculate
we is stoned........immaculate
"Stronger than dirt!" (my fave Doors line.)
I think queen already has it, but they get my vote too anyway.
Queen wins (the best-of-9 format)
One of the all-time big debates:
Beatles
vs
Rolling Stones
True, all-time big debate. It could have been in the finals, but the seedings often made brutal match-ups this tourney.
After my first girlfriend broke up with me in 1972, I played Ruby Tuesday 100 times a day for a week. The Beatles never did that for me.
The Stones.
f the beatles.
Stones, I say
wow, LJ took the words outta my mouth (not likely to happen very often)
Stones!
dammit whip, how could you do that? put the last nail in the coffin....
Wow. 5-0 Sweep for the Stones. This is my kinda crowd.
A cup of Cherry Garcia from Ben & Jerry's at the corner of Haight and Ashbury.
vote dead
dammit whip, how could you do that? put the last nail in the coffin....
apart from maybe 3 songs[magical mystery tour, lsd and straberry fields forever], i don't like the beatles at all, but the stones, my my, so many amazing tunes in so many decades.
I like the dead and all, but Skynyrd have my vote. Too many Dead songs just kinda flounder instead of keeping the groove going like Truckin' does, but all of Skynyrd's sonds just kick major ass.
Gimme three steps...
Lynyrd Skynrd
I like skynyrd and all... whiskey bottles, brand new car, oak tree you're in my way...
But c'mon . Dead.
Dead win, one of two remaining #1 seeds.
The other #1 is tested in a big game:
Pink Floyd
vs
Who
ohmygodFloyd
I hate the Who.
Pink Floyd.
I can't believe the Beatles got slammed so hard. They are THE BEATLES. My God, people, what's wrong with you?
I love both of these bands. But, meet me on the dark side of the moon.
Pink Floyd is the greatest
baba o'reily is my favorite song of all time, but that's about it from them.
pink floyd for sure
Floyd wins easily.
Led Zeppelin
vs
Black Sabbath
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsI'm voting Zep...coz I am still pissed that Black Sabbath knocked Aerosmith out
I adamately ABSTAIN. Write In: Jefferson Airplane
I should chose Black Sabbath since that's what I listened to when I was not yet 14. THEN Houses of the Holy......oh ...I can't choose.
http://www.photofeatures.com/blacksabbath/ppages/ppage57.htmlSabbath
No wait
Zeppelin
NO!
Sabbath
ARRRGHHHH
I vote Ziggy Stardust.
zep will prove difficult opponents for pf, so i'll vote for black sabbath, although i like plant better
What the hell are all of you idiots thinking? The Beatles are 100% better than the Stones, and The Who outshines Floyd (although just barely). And Queen over The Doors? Oh, the humanity!!
Philistines.
Queen had Freddie. The Doors had an acid burnout who wrote quasi-intellectual poppycock. Thats not to say I don't like them, but Queen just pwnz them. And nobody can write a song (or an album) like Rodger Waters, and only about five people can play guitar on the level of David Gilmour. The Who's songs don't speak to me (get it? Speak To Me? get it? get it?) like Wish You Were Here, or any of the songs off The Wall, or Pigs On The Wing...
What the hell are all of you idiots thinking? The Beatles are 100% better than the Stones, and The Who outshines Floyd (although just barely). And Queen over The Doors? Oh, the humanity!!
Philistines.
Heads.
And what Wolf said goes for me, too. Except I agree with the Floyd and Queen selections. :o
RUSH! HOW could you vote against Geddy, Peart and Lifeson?!
Talking Heads. And all of you who voted down The Beatles are surely going to rot in a flaming hell where the only music to be heard is Britney Spears tunes rearranged as Muzak.
Stop Making Sense (vhs/dvd), at that college concert was subtle build up from nothing... They ended up a tight art form...
The Heads
Heads for the win.
Nirvana (3)
vs
Jimi Hendrix Experience (2)
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsanother tuff one....
dammit.
Im watching Audioslave/Rage concerts right now.... I keep hearing jimi hendrix influences... (probly my imagination)
I go with Jimi... ( i'd like to hear a jam with him and Primus)
(oh crap, now I'm watching the Foo Fighters, which may not exist without the Nirvana thing ... including todays' Queens of Stones, and Eagles of Death Metal, also)
Screw it, the Foo Fighters are a jumping good time band, second to Me First and the Gimmee Gimmes...
Dammmm that grundge influence, is hard to see what's more influential.
Nirvana, though I understand the "importance" and talent of Hendrick.
It is tough, but I have to go with Jimi. Can't have my old fart status revoked.
Talking Heads. And all of you who voted down The Beatles are surely going to rot in a flaming hell where the only music to be heard is Britney Spears tunes rearranged as Muzak.
Back in 1972, the Beatles WERE MUZAK. Progressive Rock got no air play on the radio. I got tired of people asking me why I didn't like the Beatles like everyone else did. They thought I listened to obscure stuff: Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Gryphon, Trimvirat, Renaissance --- that was when you used a lower-case 'a' in 'alternative'.
Nonsense...I am a huge Prog Rock fan, and I've never thought the Beatles to be Muzak. Hell, I think Glenn Miller was a genius, I can't get enough Nat King Cole and I practically worship Scott Joplin. None of that ever stopped me from blasting out "Selling England by the Pound", though.
I suppose that I hold the Mop Tops as something of a rarified quantity, though. In my own mind, they are above most others in terms of cultural significance, and quantity and consistency of quality.
talent over angst appeal
Hendrix
And if Hendrix were still alive, I'd wail on him for killing himself.

Well, you have broad tastes. Good for you. I just can't do it. No Doubt.
Oh, by the way, the search engineer asks...
Did you mean Grateful Dead?
I am losing it. I must have looked at that a hundred times and thought, something's not quite right here...
Yes wins, closing out the round.
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bands
Since most matches were completed in an hour it seems we have room to expand the format for the elite eight.
The next four matches determine the final four. They will be in a BEST of ELEVEN format. In this format it will take SIX VOTES to WIN the match.
Again, SIX votes to WIN.
Ready --
Pink Floyd
vs
Queen
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsThat's a really hard one. Very different bands, but both are great.
I'm going to go with Pink Floyd.
QUEEN.
(I frickin' hate Pink Floyd.)
how can I decide? I love both too much to betray the other
I SHALL LET ITUNES DEICDE!
...aaaaand iTunes wont work. No wait, there it goes!
Floyd it is.
FLOYD. and it's not close
FLOYD. and it's not close
Well, Lumber, that is one thing that were are in violent agreement about.
Floyd, man, totally. My band does Echoes and Fearless.
bet my CD does echoes better than your band.....
bet my CD does echoes better than your band.....
Depends on which night . . . and which night . . .
QUEEN
....soo not happy that Santana are gone!
Sorry folks, but this gender-challenged individual hates Queen. No Doubt.
If it weren't for the Beatles, there may not have BEEN progressive rock.
If it weren't for the Beatles, there may not have BEEN progressive rock.
Word. Indeed, members of Yes said they were directly influenced by the Beatles. And I was a Yes groupie.
But, as a teenager in 1972, The Beatles == Britney Spears. ALL commercial stations were ONLY TOP-40. It was horrible.
To me, Prog was post-Beatles Rock. Much more sophisticated. Learn from their ansestors, and brought Rock to the Next Level.
But, what do I know. I'm just a girl. No Doubt.
Floyd takes the match.
Grateful Dead
vs
Jimi Hendrix Experience
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsMusically, I think....overallllllll, .....i prefer Jimi. he's just so fucking groovy.
.......but the Dead created a lifestyle.
That's pretty big. I followed them around the country for a substantial amount of my youth.
so,
um......er The Grateful Dead
good i dea increasing the vote number. yer smart. SMRT
Sigh. Another hard one.
I'm going to go with the Dead.
BTW, I never anticipated a future world where, in a forum rock voting thing, the Top 8 would include Talking Heads, Pink Floyd and Yes. Some how in the last 30 years the world veered off in the right direction. Amazing.
I still say Rush deserved on there more than Talking Heads. And the fact that Nirvana made it as far as they did disgusts me.
EDIT: My prediction is Floyd vs. Yes in the finals, with Yes winning by a whisker... or Floyd winning by a whisker, I don't reeeeally know. I see Zeppelin vs. Floyd and Yes vs. the Dead in the semifinal, with Yes and Floyd triumphing.
Well, I'm bummed out that The Cranberries didn't make the Final Four. But, the matchups were brutal.
Still, where were Blondie, No Doubt and Jefferson Airplane?
I guess they settled for the National Invitation Tournament. ;)
jimi hendrix [all along the watchtower]
I'm glad No Doubt didn't make it, I'm sorry. But Ziggy/David Bowie and the Spiders should have been on here, as should have the Alan Parsons Project, The Allman Brothers Band, The Boomtown Rats, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, CCR, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, Iron Maiden, the Black Crowes, Motley Crue, Mr. Big, Niacin, Primus, The Ramones, Racer X, Ratt, Scorpions, Sex Pistols, Spinal Tap, Steppenwolf, the Stray Cats, Tally Hall, The Temptations, Three Dog Night, Van Halen, Weather Report, Whitesnake, XTC, and ZZ Top.
...heh.
This is a toughie but I'm going with Hendrix. His version of All Along the Watchtower is powerful, freaky stuff. And he did an ode to bipolar disorder. Cool.
My prediction is Floyd vs. Yes in the finals, with Yes winning by a whisker...
eeeer!! :rasta:
I'm going with the Dead.
But saying one is better than the other is like saying an ice cream cone is better than shrimp.
...But I don't like shrimp... I don't eat shrimp, even if I did like it... I'm a vegetarian... not a particularly good similie.
I've never been a fan of either. In honor of LJ, I'll vote COCK.
...But I don't like shrimp... I don't eat shrimp, even if I did like it... I'm a vegetarian... not a particularly good similie.
I like chocolate milk.:yum:
I'll vote for the Dead becuase Jimi was gay ("excuse me while I kiss this guy") and I have a 7 year old in the house...
god, girl. ya crack me up!
Dead take the match, a close one.
Talking Heads
vs
Led Zeppelin
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsIncisively Hendrix (chew those strings, fella!)
Zep.
A pox on all of....those who...voted unlike me. Well! I can be upset, can't I?
And you may ask yourself: "How did I get here?" Good question, Dave.
Led Zeppelin.
well, the Heads were artsy fartsy ingenious think about stuff....
But the Zep rocked.
I like the Talking Heads, but come on.
Zeppelin.
Zep in a blowout. The Heads had a great tourney run, beating major opponents (U2!) but ran out of support against a stronger opponent.
The last match of the round:
Rolling Stones
vs
Yes
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsStones, but I still think It should have been the Beatles going up against Yes. You guys are nuts.
I'll go with the underdogs, just to give the losers a lil positive support
... Yes.
Yes doesn't even belong in the tourney. whuuuuuuuuuuuut theeeeeeeeeefuuuuuuuuck? yes has what? 4, maybe 5 good songs? (jinx is coughing up her tea.....she says if i actually like 4 or 5 Yes songs, she's leaving me.)
Stones.
Rolling Stones -- still rolling.
Zep in a blowout. The Heads had a great tourney run, beating major opponents (U2!) but ran out of support against a stronger opponent.
Heads fans were asleep.
Rolling Stones -- still rolling.
Rolling Stones = still old
Tough one for me...'Stones were one of the first true rock bands I ever got into, but I have to vote for Yes, here.
Wrong dude. You just like a lot of distortion in your lead guitar. I hate all of Zep's songs. Different strokes for different folks.
One of the finest 4 album runs of rock:
The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge, and (the much misunderstood) Tales from Topographic Oceans
Well, folks as chaotic as the seedings and process was, the Final Four is a solid set. Now for them to compete for the coveted Cellar Championship, we need to have them perform in a Battle of the Bands for us.
A remarkable last game, the Stones win.
Two semi-final matches lead to the final. It remains 6 votes to win.
Pink Floyd
vs
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the greatest 4 album runs of rock:
Dark Side of the Moon
Wish You Were Here
Animals
The Wall
how about 10 albums, with maybe 3 or 4 bad songs total?
I guess I'll vote for Zeppelin becuase LJ will just use my login to vote again if I don't....
Led Zeppelin - all - the - way.
iconic, musical lead vocalist, innovative guitar, genius bass/keys/strings/arrangements, and massive giant drummer. Come on.
Floyd has its points, innovations, angst but Zeppelin defines the genre and so much more.
It's gotta be Zep. Guitar sounds the way it does because of what they did to it.
It's gotta be Zep. Guitar sounds the way it does because of what they did to it.
Some folks don't like that sound. That's all.
Give me Steve Howe and David Gilmour anyday.
Led Zeppelin - all - the - way.
iconic, musical lead vocalist, innovative guitar, genius bass/keys/strings/arrangements, and massive giant drummer. Come on.
Floyd has its points, innovations, angst but Zeppelin defines the genre and so much more.
Dark Side of the Moon was the defining album of 70's Rock. It was on the Billboard charts for 15 years. It's simply the best rock album ever.
Pink FUCKING Floyd. Technical perfection and wonderful writing beats overdrive and good riffs any day.
Zeppelin challenged the world, Floyd only described it.
Well, cheers to the whole Pink Floyd team!
Brianna
Rock Steady
glatt
barefoot serpent
Ibram
Beestie
You folks rock!
Beestie puts Floyd over the top!
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bands
Your second semi-final match, six votes to win
Rolling Stones
vs
Grateful Dead
Ouch. nothing matters anymore.
I couldn't vote in the last game. Floyd Vs Led Zep is like picking which of your children you like better. :o
Ouch. nothing matters anymore.
right.
the dead
Garcia & The Dead.
I'd like to hear what they would sound like today had they stayed together/Jerry hadn't died.
I gotta go with the Dead here. If not for the Dead, I wouldn't have my 14 year-old son (his name is Danny, but his dad wanted to name him Jerry or Bobby) his middle name is Neil after You-Know-Who
Both bands are good. I'll let the true fans decide.
About 15 years ago at a concert, before I knew her, one of my girl friends handed a dozen roses to Mick Jagger and they showed her on the big screen as she did it.
If we were playing "best pot-induced rambling imitation of Bob Dylan, but less coherent" then maybe it would be the grateful dead.
But this is Rock and Roll. And the Stones are Rock and Roll.
Late votes aside, the Dead have won it!
Ladies and gentlemen the final round
This will be, only because we now have enough people voting, a best-of-13 round requiring 7 votes to win. Again, SEVEN VOTES TO WIN.
Ready:
Pink Floyd
vs
Grateful Dead
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bandsWelcome my son, welcome to the machine..........
Pink Floyd
I ........ am, comfortably numb.....
Careful with that VAX, Eugene.
Pink Floyd (formed in 1965 in Cambridge, England) is an English rock band, noted for progressive compositions, philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, cover art and elaborate live shows. The group is one of rock music's most successful and influential acts, believed to have sold an estimated 73.5 million albums in the U.S.,[1] and over 200 million albums worldwide.[2]
Pink Floyd enjoyed moderate success in the late 1960s as a psychedelic band led by Syd Barrett. Barrett's erratic behaviour caused his colleagues to replace him with guitarist David Gilmour and the band went on to record several elaborate concept albums, achieving worldwide success with 1973's Dark Side of the Moon, 1975's Wish You Were Here and 1979's The Wall, among the best-selling, most critically acclaimed, and enduringly popular albums in rock music history.
-------------------
The Grateful Dead was an American psychedelia-influenced rock band formed in 1965 in San Francisco. The band was known for its unique and eclectic songwriting style—which fused elements of rock, folk music, bluegrass, blues, country, and jazz—and for live performances of long modal jams.
The Grateful Dead began their career in Palo Alto, California as "The Warlocks" ... After meeting their new manager Rock Scully, they moved to the Haight-Ashbury section of San Francisco. Many bands from this area, such as Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother & the Holding Company, and Santana, went on to national fame, giving San Francisco an image as a center for the hippie counterculture of the era.
you're dead to me
Jerry's deader.
Roger Waters, David Gilmour and the boys.
Back to the Stones for a minute, I thought their Super Bowl performance sucked. Last year's Paul McCartney thing was canned and boring. Janet Jackson single breastedly set back Super Bowl halftime shows 50 years.
The last decent Super Bowl halftime music was Gwen, No Doubt, and Sting. "Message in a Bottle" with Sting and Gwen singing and No Doubt playing the instrumentals was terrific. A month later Gwen inducts The Police into the Rock Hall of Fame.
If the NFL can't do a decent Super Bowl halftime music act anymore, just cancel the friggin thing. Focus on the football game for Peet's Coffee sake. Enough washed up English acts. Shit, Detroit, Motown, they could have done much better.
pink floyd of course .... like, wtf
HAMMER! HAMMER! HAMMER! HAMMER!
PINK! FLOYD! PINK! FLOYD!
Floyd takes an early commanding 4-1 lead over the Dead. But in the rough-and-tumble Cellar-64 tourneys, you never know until the last vote.
No activity anticipated in after-market trading. East Coast dwellar rock fans expected to voice their opinion in several hours. The highly-coveted Cellar-64 Rock Championship hangs in the balance.....
floyd.....
btw, which one's pink?
And there it is! Your Cellar Field of 64 Rock Bands winner

which like better?
We do this a lot in the bathroom stalls at school, except it tends to just be one of the cardinal brackets and the playoffs/finals never get done. Which maybe is somehow reflective of the mental state around here.
But, the part I always enjoy most is how abstract it gets when you ignore categories. Like infinite blowjobs versus the kiln technician vs salad, or something.
On the other hand I'm not sure how much encouragement the cellar really needs towards resembling bathroom walls.
