So what do you all do here?

jochser • Apr 5, 2006 1:09 pm
Besides make boring threads? :p
fargon • Apr 5, 2006 1:24 pm
We used to have conversation. Now It seems that we are haveing to defend our selfs from a bunch of immature brats, that seem to have forgetten or never learned how to act in public.

The Cellar has members ranging in age from middle teens to 70 plus. The one thing we all have in commen, is we enjoy intelengent conversation.

If the AG'ers want to be stupid they can start there own forum and leave us alone. If you want to stay and play nice, leave AG at the door.

"Spelt" is in your dictionary.

Sure is.

Main Entry: spelt
Pronunciation: 'spelt
Function: noun

Middle English, from Old English, from Late Latin spelta, of Germanic origin; perhaps akin to Middle High German spelte split piece of wood, Old High German spaltan to split -- more at SPLIT

A wheat (Triticum aestivum spelta) with lax spikes and spikelets containing two light red kernels

...okay, so "podcast" is only in Oxford...

If they list "spelt", then we're soon going to see a new entry for "ax":

ax5 v. to pose a question

You folks were oohing and ahhing about Jochser before s/he it ever arrived. I googled the user name and was interested to discover that Jochser has been banned on a number of boards. The Cellar is only the latest of many.

It seems like every time things settle down a little and folks become more accepting of you, another one of the former AG members has to shoot the dead horse again.

You guys mostly sit up here in home base - not you, Steve - you seem to have branched out - and cackle with one another about the "ancients." UT resurrected the "Cellar Field of 64" thread just for you guys, and the last time I looked, not a single newbie who originally was on AG has bothered to participate in it.

Flint and you make all these remarks about "fear of change," but what you fail to see is that this fear seems to be working both ways here.

Yes, we have criteria. We are not interested in being spammed by someone who posts in nothing but obscenities. None of us here is so prissy or sheletered that we don't use the occasional "fuck" or "cunt" or LJ's infamous "cock," but we do have other words in our vocabularies.

Sorry if this offends you.

Is it mandatory to post on the "Field of 64" thread?

Yeah, sorry for the omission, Flint.

Good for you that you have a healthy sense of self esteem. There are aspects of myself that I like very much and other aspects that I don't care for much. I think I am not alone in this. No one is perfect, and most people are aware that they are not themselves.

However, there is a difference between being self referential and having a healthy sense of self esteem. I try to listen to the feedback of others and if I keep hearing the same thing from enough different people, I at least give some consideration to their words. If I accidently step on someone's toe in a crowded elevator, I apologize; I don't say to them "I like the way I am."

No "Field of 64" is not required, but its a fast moving thread consisting of one liners which you guys claim is what you want. :eyebrow:

And you haven't addressed what the REALLY important points are here - being self referential and your own possible fear of change.

Sometimes, humorous profanity needs to be...well, humorous, for starters, but perhaps worked in a bit more subtly. I like to think of it as aspiring to the verbal/written equivalent of an old time striptease as opposed to the latest issue of Hustler.

One of the greatest things about the Cellar is that you can be incredibly asinine and still have a home. One of the worst things about the Cellar is that you can be incredibly asinine and still have a home.

UT has a high tolerance for idiots--at least, he used to. I'm not around enough anymore to say that with confidence, but I would imagine that that has not changed. And that's probably more good than bad in the end.

I still enjoy Cellar, but I just don't have a lot of time to spend here anymore, so I just check out the threads that sound interesting to me.

Of course, any post that I make is very interesting, and should be worshipped and admired. ;)
Rock Steady • Apr 6, 2006 1:39 am
As far as what we all do here, didn't I already outline the "Stuff of Life" in another thread in response to an AGer? Guys, this is not a chat room, it is a forum. You could read stuff that preceded you.

sycamore wrote:

Syc-- That's exactly what I do too. I cherry pick the threads, maybe 15% of them. The only reason I read this thread was because my usual threads had no new posts this hour.

I totally gave up on the other forum that we both belong to. I'm a mod there and a 5 year member. But, it has just gone to hell. And, you know the other forum CTA and I founded is really dead. But, I'd rather it dead than invite a bunch of assholes.

So, although I'm a mod at two other places, now my main online hangout is The Cellar. It quietly rocks, if you know what I mean.

Just check the archive. Not only does she have several such cards, she also has a set of keys to the insane asylum. Literally.

When my ex- did her psych rotation as a student nurse (at the same institution where wolf works, by the way), the running joke was you could tell who was "sane" only because they were the ones who had keys.

Well, I was just kidding.

Once when I went to join a gym, I only wanted to join for 6 months because I knew my lease at my apartment was up and I might be moving. The muscle bound, well toned guy behind the counter said something like, "6 Months? That's it? You think you're going to be in perfect shape in 6 months?" So, I said, "How long 'til you're done?"

I didn't like his question, he didn't like my response. He apparently thought he was Mr. Universe or something.

Years ago the place I was working cut a bulk-purchase deal with the local Bally's. They brought in a sales guy to sell memberships...and it was an incredibly lame hard-sell. after a few minutes I recognized where I'd seen the techniques before: at a car dealership.

You know, that's EXACTLY the reaction I had. We were members of LA Fitness for a while--my wife's then-employer had a good signup deal. I didn't have a problem with joining; I thought it was relatively straightforward.

But they offered you a free session of personal training with the membership. And that's where the used-car-lot tactics started.
