3/8/2006: Oarfish, the real sea serpent

Neatorama finds this neato item - for those guys who always want a longer one, well there you go. Actually this is an oarfish, washed up on the West Australian coast. There have been at least six such washups in the last few months, which I take is more than normal. The beast is actual, but is really rarely seen since it lives very deep in the sea and only rarely surfaces.

It is probably the creature that sparked "sea serpent" legends following sightings by ancient mariners.

Last year a woman in Cleveland on the north-east coast of England caught a 63.5kg, 3.5m-long oarfish while fishing for cod, using a squid bait.

Scientists were disappointed when the woman, who weighed 13kg less than the fish, sliced it up and put it in her freezer.

The fish is not good to eat.

Phew.

I can imagine a shark eating finding a school of these:"Oh Boy! Fetticini!"

That fish looks awesome, but at the same time completely terrifying. I can just imagine swimming in shallow water and seeing one these things coming at me (alive or dead), I would probably kill myself in fear of it doing worse to me...:eek3:

Not to worry! I can figure out how to cook it. Just catch the sob.

Does that fish have any fins? It looks like it's made of plastic. That would explain why it's not good to eat.

The key to catching these babies is you've got to use a good squid bait, lightly breaded with marinara on the side, and be earnestly and convincingly fishing for cod. You also must be a woman, and preferably from Cleveland, though Akron, Sandusky and Youngstown are also viable.

Legend has it that there's a rare and even more elusive two-headed version, the Ether Oarfish. To catch that, Cleveland residency is definitely required.
