Cellar moving again, outage pending

Undertoad • Feb 14, 2006 6:04 pm
The Cellar will be unavailable on Friday 2/17, from approx. 11am to approx. 2pm. At that time it will be on the fastest, bestest connection it has ever been on. It will also be more expensive than ever, but not the crazy price I would have to pay if I stayed with the current provider (Netreach/neonetix/nntx).

It is not unfair google fodder to say that Neonetix seriously lost it with their business plan. The evidence is here, for those geeky/interested:

http://www.nntx.net/Services/CoLocation.asp

This page describes the pricing for placing a server in Netreach/neonetics server room. The key figure is "Throughput (monthly max)". You notice that, at the $150 "enhanced" rate, the maximum throughput you can get is "30Gb". The lower-case b, it turns out, is important.

It indicates that your maximum throughput is 30 gigabits. The problem here is that every other provider on the net lists that figure in gigaBYTES.

If you've taken CompSci 101 you might recall that there are 8 bits in a byte. It's a little worse than that, because the traffic that's measured in bits includes bits dedicated to controlling the protocol. So let's say the difference between a GB and a Gb is ten-fold.

Therefore, by making that b lower-case, Netreach/neonetix set its monthly limits at a point where the Cellar, at the $150/month package, reached the limit in 2 days.

20 days would not have surprised me. But if a simple forum maxes your "enhanced" package out in 2 days, your business plan is hosed.

Now look at the "additional bandwidth" pricing at the bottom of the page. They insisted that the $595 price for 1.5mb/sec is their price for unmetered bandwidth, not affected by the monthly max. So the actual retail price to me, for three servers, would be $775/month.

The competition offered me $389/month for three servers at 10mb/sec unmetered.

Again, either $775 for 1.5mb/sec unmetered, or $389 for 10mb/sec unmetered.
Griff • Feb 14, 2006 6:25 pm
Speaking of slacking off, I need to hit the tip jar... advising others to to likewise. thanks Tony.
BigV • Feb 14, 2006 6:28 pm
Your last sentence make clear which is the better choice.

qq:

$389/month PER server for three servers? or for all three servers (or however many servers you have...)? or 129/server/month?

Also, in my experience, the "unmetered" tagline is, shall we say, fuzzy. They may actually not meter it. They may meter it and don't quanitfy / charge for it. But I'm certain that if your resources are a large load on their systems then you *will* get a call and a renegotiation will commence.

I would say that your first defense is a thorough reading of the contract. You have demonstrated your skill at this. But a high speed connection like that (10Mb/sec, pretty good) which is better than I could find in a short local search, may be too good to be true too.
Undertoad • Feb 14, 2006 6:33 pm
I should say that a good portion of that monthly nut will come from my two other clients, so not all of that 389 will come out of the Cellar funds... probably 159. Tip jar hits are appreciated nonetheless
xoxoxoBruce • Feb 14, 2006 6:38 pm
Check's in the mail. :)
Griff • Feb 14, 2006 6:40 pm
So two sailors a Pole and a Chech are swept off the deck of their whaler...you know the rest.
Undertoad • Feb 14, 2006 6:46 pm
$389 for all 3, BigV.

I might also note that similar services are available at different rates all over the net. For example, you can go to 1and1.com, click on "root server" and see they will sell you 1000GB of transfer per month PLUS THE SERVER for $99/month. (Unfortunately the server is only 40 GB hard drive...) Or burst.net, click on colocation and there's 2000GB/month for $109.95 or 10mb/sec unlimited for $329.95.

Or if I was really serious I might go here and get an entire half-rack with 2mb/sec for the same price as neonetix. Then I would be right at the peering hub of a lot of major providers.

Fuck, it hardly even pays to understand all this shit when someone can screw you over by making their b lower-case.

this thread brought to you by the letter "b"
lumberjim • Feb 14, 2006 7:14 pm
should we do another fund raiser?

lotta new folks that don't have cellar tshirts, pens, coffee mugs or mousepads out there.
Undertoad • Feb 14, 2006 7:22 pm
Bake sale? :rasta:

No seriously I bet there are T-shirt places on the web that are better than cafepress and let you submit designs.

And forget about that one marked "titles". That was just an idea.
wolf • Feb 15, 2006 1:55 am
Very cool shirts. Especially since they can do them in black.

The blue glass coffee mug is more than classy. I would need several. I fear breakage.
Elspode • Feb 15, 2006 1:52 pm
Can we get our Cellar handles added to these shirts somehow?
Elspode • Feb 15, 2006 2:06 pm
I've answered my own question...if you go to the link LJ provided and log in, you can select the Cellar shirt design and add text. I was going to put "Lumberjim" on one and save it as a different design name, but then I decided I probably shouldn't screw with LJ's setup.

These are a one-off, Cafe Press type of arrangement, right? How do profits get to UT if we order, just out of curiosity?
lumberjim • Feb 15, 2006 3:04 pm
actually, i think there are minimum orders. but they're cheaper than cafe press. it would have to be similar to last time, but i think we should limit color and style. also, i would hope that these folks are more reliable in their production. based on the size of the order, we could just ad $5 to the per unit cost, or whatever. i like that they do mugs and mousepads. those designs are from 04's shirts. nothing to say we can't start from scratch.

I'm in.
BigV • Feb 15, 2006 10:04 pm
I will gladly pay you Tuesday, for a coffee mug today.

Ok, just kidding. I'll have two, please. But I'd rather just kick in the same amount of cash directly to the tip jar, and eliminate the overhead.
smoothmoniker • Feb 15, 2006 10:11 pm
I'd buy one
Elspode • Feb 16, 2006 5:28 pm
I'd go two on the mugs. Have to think about the shirts.
xoxoxoBruce • Feb 16, 2006 7:14 pm
I’m hesitant to encourage UT to complicate his life with huckstering.
More better we send money. :eyebrow:
lumberjim • Feb 16, 2006 7:16 pm
yeah. i tend to agree. cool mug though, huh?
footfootfoot • Feb 16, 2006 9:00 pm
I'd take six since we are low on mugs, they break.
But hitting the tip jar is less complicated. so never mind.

Unless you order them.

they look cool, especially back lit like that, with the white seamless and the soft box overhead, and the white fill cards.

Very cool....I have some like that with the Boeing logo. Make that had, I think I have 1 left. Didn't break 'em, just didn't want to listen to "Those are soooo pretty, I wish.......". You know the rest.
Elspode • Feb 17, 2006 9:42 am
Probably right. Looks like we're back to Cafe Press for one-off stuff, though.

On a lighter note, I just want to point out that the tag line isn't nearly as funny today as it usually is...
dar512 • Feb 17, 2006 11:23 am
I don't know. It's slightly reminiscent of "No child left behind" - which I thought was a riot.
barefoot serpent • Feb 17, 2006 3:18 pm
so do we get a rebate for the outage time? well? HUH?

j/k! BTW: does the tip jar take PayPal?
Undertoad • Feb 17, 2006 4:32 pm
The tip jar IS Paypal man!!

The move seems to have gone well except that Verizon has not picked up on the DNS change yet. A few of us will not be able to get on yet.
Undertoad • Feb 17, 2006 5:29 pm

Congrats, UT on a successful move. A non-trivial exercise smartly executed. Good job, and thanks.
Undertoad • Feb 17, 2006 11:24 pm
I think I forgot about the DNS time-to-live.
wolf • Feb 18, 2006 1:34 am
Strangely, AOL has picked up the DNS change, but Comcast has not.

Actually the strangest part is being grateful for something related to AOL ...
wolf • Feb 18, 2006 2:18 am
What a difference an hour makes. Okay, 45 minutes.

I can get on via comcast now.
Undertoad • Feb 18, 2006 9:00 am
Verizon picked it up too.

This should be the last move or anything for a long time.
wolf • Feb 18, 2006 12:19 pm
comcast lost you again. *sigh*
wolf • Feb 18, 2006 12:22 pm
And found you again. Maybe AOL shows it the way. I dunno. it's confusing, but i'm going to stop trying to figure it out before my head starts to hurt.
xoxoxoBruce • Feb 18, 2006 4:50 pm
Damn!
I can't get here from my bookmark.
I can't get here by typing the Cellar in my browser.
I can't even get here from Google.
:(
glatt • Feb 18, 2006 4:52 pm
So how did you get here?
Clodfobble • Feb 18, 2006 4:52 pm
Then... how are you here?
Undertoad • Feb 18, 2006 4:55 pm
I gave B an alternate address via email.

Don't know what to suggest, except that www dot cellar.org might be different from cellar.org. Traffic says we're pretty much all the way back!
Griff • Feb 18, 2006 5:23 pm
My access has been sporadic.
xoxoxoBruce • Feb 18, 2006 5:25 pm
I came in through the bathroom window.
Yeah, I tried the wwwdot cellardot org and even the http://www etc.
Comcast is being recalcitrant.... so is Google. :smack:
xoxoxoBruce • Feb 19, 2006 8:16 am
Same this morning.
I can understand Comcast doesn't have their shit together but Google should be able to link.
Under the Cellar listing, which is still #1 for cellar in Google, it says, "cellar.org/ - 37k - Feb 17, 2006 - Cached - Similar pages".
The 17th was friday so maybe they haven't checked since before the move. Where are the spiders???
capnhowdy • Feb 19, 2006 9:13 am
This morning is the first time I've been able to get here since Friday afternoon, even THRU the bathroom window.

I'm breathing a sigh of relief. Whew!

It linked right up from my old desktop icon.
Undertoad • Feb 19, 2006 9:14 am
Google's link IS your Comcast connection - Google just presents the link, and it's up to your connection to decode it.

It should not still have trouble... how annoying.

xoxoxoBruce • Feb 19, 2006 11:27 am
Woo Hoo :band: It worked! Changed DNS servers to 4.2.2.2 & 3 and it worked.
God I wish I understood what the hell I did, but I'm too lazy to expend the effort to learn all this shit. That would be like learning to rebuild an engine just to get to the bar. I think I'll just keep sucking up to, and annoying, my mechanic(geek) friends. :D

Well, gotta go now. I promised to, get this, help 2 people straighten out their PCs. :lol2:

Yikes! What are you getting for your trouble? The only people that rate that from me (without paying) are my parents, in gratitude for them raising me to adulthood without strangling me (which was surely a weekly temptation, if not more often).
Undertoad • Feb 19, 2006 3:31 pm
I have repaired, semi-repaired, and/or "non-repaired" just about every PC and/or every network of everyone I know in the last year. I am exhausted.
richlevy • Feb 19, 2006 3:52 pm
I did once have a friend who was working for one of the Kennedy clan who I gave some free support to. She asked me to quote a billable rate but I ended up doing it for free since it only took 5 minutes.

My best unpaid/unofficial support call was for a coworker who was also a mainframe programmer. He was on oncall support and had a laptop and modem for the first time. He called me at about 2am and woke me out of a sound sleep. I was, however, able to diagnose his problem in less than 30 seconds.

Him: Rich, it's ****. I'm trying to dial in to **** and I can't get a dial tone with the modem.
Me: Where are you?
Him: Upstairs.
Me: Where's the computer?
Him: In the room with me.
Me: Where's the phone you're using.
Him: Here in the room.
Me: How many phone jacks are in the room.
Him: One.
Me: If the phone's in the same room as the computer, what's the modem plugged into.
(click) I was left holding the phone.

We did a recreation for our company dinner.Image

One's a friend with privileges and the other is the guy that stores my '57 chevy for me.

I got an email from Buster saying at 7pm tonight he still can't reach the Cellar.
I think he's on dsl, but I'm not sure. :(
Pie • Feb 19, 2006 11:33 pm
I was wondering why I wasn't having any troubles with accessing the cellar, even right after the move (since I have Comcrap) when it hit me -- I run my own dns. That explains it.
