School closure and mental health.

School closures across the UK have provided a unique opportunity to explore teenagers’ mental health and wellbeing when not in school. Perhaps surprisingly at first glance, our recent study of year nine students in the south west of England actually suggested there might have been an overall reduction in anxiety, and an increase in wellbeing, in young people aged 13-14 during the coronavirus lockdown.

Obviously it's complicated but yeah at 13 I'd have preferred to stay home.

I've got one of each: a kid who is perfectly content to stay home, and a kid who is seriously bummed out about only getting to see friends online. Overall, I'd say success-related anxiety is down, while general isolation/fear anxiety is up. But the longer we get used to the new normal, the less of an issue the latter becomes.
