To take pictures specifically for posting, just turn the resolution down to 640x480/low to medium quality, and you should be fine. To shrink a full size image, I like to use The Gimp, though I'm sure there's some nifty minimal utility to do the job.

The best digital image utility I've used to date is Irfanview. It's quick and easy to use, small download, and it's free too!

Other than that, you can always open your picture in MS Paint, click on the image menu and follow these directions. Once you've resized the picture click on the file menu and save the image. Easy!

I second irfanview. Always shoot at the highest resolution that's practical given your camera & memory card. It'll still look good if you have to shrink it, but if you have to blow up a small image you'll get image degradation.

Thumbs up

I can't say enough nice things about Irfanview. I have lots of full-featured programs, but nothing will shrink and change the JPG quality in batch mode like Irfanview. You could turn a long list of 750K files from a 3.1 megapixel camera into 60K files for e-mailing and Cellar posting.

It's one of the best freeware photo apps out there.
