Hull

I really want to go back to the UK and hit up London, Liverpool, and Hull.

Thing is, I know very little about Hull except that its where the Spiders from Mars are from.

Ever been? What's it like? nice place? interesting? fun?

It's flat. Very very flat.

I bought my dog from a breeder in Hull.

The Wicked Stepdaughter went to Hull Uni, and I've visited Hull several times on business trips. It's a northern town - cold and windswept, the wind coming in straight off the North Sea, bearing upon it the signature smell of Hull - rotting fish, for it is also a large fishing port.

The town has all the characteristics of any Uni town - cheap & nasty student housing mixed in with muncipal architecture of that peculiarly British style of pretentious gothic. Places of note around Hull are the Deep ( sea-world on steroids), the Humber Bridge and a large sandbank known as Sperm Point.

Saving Graces? It's flat.....

I've never been myself, but has been voted Britain's most "Crap Town." Go to Manchester instead.

Hull is often referred to (amusingly) as Hell. I suppose it would be an interesting place to visit from a foreign perspective but it's rather a grim place from a UK perspective. Boarded up houses, litter on the streets, legions of unemployed sitting round all day drinking in pubs with filthy tables, obese children raised on chip butties and alcopops....

Meh - I haven't been there in about 6 years now, but I found it thoroughly depressing. I do find the local accent strangely attractive though

Manchester is a really cool city. It's quite cosmopolitan ( though not as much as London) and is a favourite with students. Lots of really good bars, clubs, museums, galleries etc. It has a thriving indie music scene and lots of theatres. It was an ancient Roman fort town (chester comes from caester) and on the outskirts there are some good archaeological digs.

The Hull accent is lovely Though I also think the manc accent is.

Hull is an unpleasant place......Nearby York is much nicer.

I only know that the Saskatoon in the Saskatchewan providence is all flat. So says a friend of mine from there. I always figured the rest of it matched the landscape of our states since it shares the same continent?
