September 16, 2011 Antiguan Couple
Children dressed as Spanish couples in Guatemalan Independence Day parade. Antigua, Guatemala via Semillas de Amor Semillas de Amor had their own Independence Day celebration, too. (Forgive my interest in Guatemala. My three children were born there. My daughter was born in Antigua and spent her first ten months at Semillas de Amor, so they have a special place in my heart. )

I have a special place in my heart for Guatemalans myself.
When I was in elementary school, a family (who my family knew very well) took in Luqui (short for another name but I won't go into that here) and she was in our class and went to our campfire girl meetings, etc. Later, in HS, she and her brother (who was so great, we all had such a nice time hanging out and he is splattered all over our yearbook that year) came back and I think it was due to the unrest in their land. I faintly recollect that they were a wealthy family. I don't know the politics or what any of it was about, but I think the children came to stay here to stay safe. We all loved them, and they quickly became part of us. |

That young lad is the spit of one of our new starters.
I'm guessing he is mixed race though; he's from Sheffield, not Guatemala. Although to our children his vowels are pretty exotic.
