This morning the ads on the radio were all aimed at the men. They suggested beest should buy me a romantic gift of.... one half of a pair of cellphones sharing minutes, a digital camera phone, diamond jewellery, a another phone, a love song cd -special price at HALLMARK when you buy 3 cards ( wife, mistress, secret gay lover?), more diamond jewellery, sex toys (no doubt with a built in cellphone), Vermont Teddy Bear (yes, please, I'd like to order the bear on the phone, does it come with any free minutes?) ......

GO AWAY. How romantic is a freaking cellphone? Why do I need another? "Darling, I remember when we met all those years ago, and you spent the whole of our first date on the phone to your best friend. This year, I got you a little something to help us rekindle that romance.... "

St. Hallmark Day for sure.

Valentine's day...

evening will be spent in class...may invest in gallon of fattening ice cream, salty chips, and gooey chocolate, all to be eaten while staring at computer screen watching fellow classmates ask stupid questions.

Afterwards, may watch tasteful, airbrushed, candlelit porn to remind self what sex is, if can find key to safe where porn is hidden from inquisitive (read: nosy) children.

If lucky, husband will call or email from Bahrain- not lucky very often. He *did* send the kids personalized chocolate bars and ordered them a Wii, so at least *someone* in this house is feelin' the love!

Hmmm just had a thought that I use a Virgin cellphone plan, perhaps they know

(sorry for quoting self, but everytime I carry on from a previous thought, all posting hell breaks loose and there's pages between my post and my original comment and then..... )

I'll be getting my girlfriend a couple daisies in a little glass vase, and maybe a Snickers on the way home from work. Neither of us are into elaborate planning or spending a bunch of money, and the only reason I do anything at all is because I like to show her I'm thinking of her. And to get laid.

If you are single, what's wrong with sending a friend a card or better yet calling them up to see what they've been up to etc.? sheesh. You don't have to spend $$ to show someone you care about them. If my husband would give me a 30 min back massage, without whining, that beats any material thing he could get me.

I have a sig other, but still wish my friends a happy V day (especially the single ones). To me it's about caring for people, not just loving one in particular. I guess it stems from school, when we gave valentines to everyone. Of course, certain people got special ones, and others got generics...but still.

It's a whole different culture over here. In some elsewheres it would seem kinda perverse to send valentine's day cards to kids or even friends -(a) it's for lovers and (b) it's supposed to be anonymous for that extra frisson. It's a whole different thing here, and not one that's easy to get used to.

I would love to get a card tomorrow.
If I opened it and it was from my best friend (or my MUM!) I'd feel worse than if I hadn't got one at all.

Flowers would make me happy regardless of who they were from, but I doubt anyone who knows mw wants to spend £30 that way...!

OK here's the sitch:
Valentine's day also happens to be SWMBO's birthday. Each year it is a challenge to come up with something that is romantic, special, birthdayish, etc etc. w/o raising the bar impossibly high for next year.

I'm out of ideas right about now.

You could lower expectations for next year by really blowing it this year. Forethought is what separates us from the animals.

Yeah, I hit the "reset" button last year, as in did absolutely nothing beyond a card. We were both overwhelmed with other things in our life and it seemed like the most humane choice.

This year, it isn't too different, but we need to make an effort.

Maybe I'm allowing too much lead time, planning-wise...
