Whatever happened to ...
Elevator music?
Not that I miss it I just wonder what happened to it. I'm kind of glad its gone. I don't remember when it was but I remember feeling really old when I was in an elevator a good while back and a song I felt really cool for liking back in the 70s or 80s had been "Muzaked" - converted into a soothing instrumental. I, for one, did not appreciate that. There are other things that were there when we went to sleep but gone when we woke up. Somebody is hoping we don't notice these things but we are the Cellar and somebody's got some splainin' to do. What else has been taken from us without our explicit approval?

Hey Beestie, have you seen the elevators that run the Captivate news service (or other similar programming)? That's basically the replacement for elevator music.

SonofV telephoned his cousin who lives a mile away. He listened, then handed the phone back to me saying "Something's wrong. It's going 'baaaaap baaaaap baaaaaap baaaaaap'."
It took longer than I expected to explain the concept of a busy signal to him.

What happened to independent bookshops?
I haven't seen one in years now. I think they were run by benign aliens, who decamped sometime around the late nineties, giving us up as a lost cause. |

I used to regularly go into bookstores and drop upwards of $100 at a time. And this is back when books were cheap, people. Then, in 1996, I made my first purchase on amazon.com.

I still love browsing used bookstores.
And for years I have missed Fizzies!

Fizzies were the best thing going. Haven't had one since 1969. Somebody tried to resurrect them a few years ago but I'm not sure what came of it.

You and millions of your friends.
Amazon along with Barnes and Noble and Border's killed the mom and pop book store.

No shit? I thought it was Wal-Mart's fault.

It was. But WalMart allowed the other evil big conglomerates to prosper. What am I saying? WE allowed it to happen. fucking pussies that we are. Buy as cheap as you possibly can, because you know, that extra 40 cents you save on a book is really going to help your pocketbook.
