May 20, 2014: Wyoming supercell

Such great images, I couldn't just post one...

The first picture there sure looks like somebody amped up the color saturation, but Photoshop didn't build that light and those clouds. This is a Wyoming supercell that appeared briefly on Sunday. Storm chasers were there to document it. In the video, the storm reaches the point of the above shots at around 0:58 to 1:08.

the pictures are gorgeous. it seems enormous, but, it's not, it's all there, all the time. what we can see, now, is the water vapor that gives some visual definition to the air and its movement. and the water vapor's there all the time, too. it's not leaping into the cloud from somewhere else. it's there all the time, like a wet rag has water but when wrung shows the previously hidden water. what I see there is the edge of temperature and pressure gradients.

it is truly beautiful.

Creating those is an old trick used by aliens to conceal their spacecraft as they descend for a landing.

Nature works on all scales, but most places people hang out are too cramped to see the large scale shit like this going on. Then on the rare occasions people do see it, they rarely document it with this quality. Kudos to them, and kudos to UT for dragging it home.

Thanks for posting, UT.

I have fond memories of Wyoming together with Colorado, Nebraska and South Dakota. Sadly, I don't think that I shall ever be able to visit again.

I stumbled across this site the other day. Well worth a look:

You'd probably have to, or at least spend a year there, to see those 31 pictures for yourself. The internet has been a god send in it's ability to show us the world, unlike TV which was more interested in showing us just the bad shit.
