12/24/2005: Bunnyface

Won't be an IotD tomorrow, as this is the weekend IotD so it's also the Xmas IotD. I leave it to you to decide whether this is cute or utterly creepy.

This is, and I have no reason to doubt, the result of a successful facial transplant in Xi'an, China.

If it's creepy, well hey -- there was the case of the human facial near-transplant that happened in France a few weeks ago; so maybe it isn't creepy after all, except...

Isn't there also a white bunny with a grey face somewhere around the facility??

It was once a joyful expression, "The rabbit died". Is this what they were talking about?

Took me a while to see that only half of the face is replaced.(and one ear)

Looks like the avoided the mouth, nose and eye. I also wonder if the ear is working?

If they left the innards of the aural canal intact, I would think so, since the outer ear is just a kind of funnel for the sound to hit that clever little series of bones. I do wonder if the bunny has any kind of physical control over the movement of the ear ... nerves don't grow back so there's nothing to provide signal to the muscles in the area.

Sure they do -- you can get feeling and movement back in an reattached finger. Now, will they grow back normally to a transplanted piece of flesh? Creepy...
