July 15, 2007: Megatanker beached in Australia

This remarkable shot is breathtaking! It does compress space a little, but there's no mistaking that this giant megatanker wound up sitting a lot closer to humanity than intended.

The Pasha Bulker wound up in this condition near Newcastle, Aus, for almost the entire month of June. Their mistake: ignoring warnings to head out to sea in advance of a major storm.

By the time they were grounded, they had to actually further ground it in advance off yet another storm. They pushed it parallel to the beach, so that it wouldn't sink entirely and release 700,000 tons of fuel oil into the water.

This then took multiple tries to get the thing back floating.

Damn, homie.

For some reason, it looks photoshopped.....anyone else think so?

zippyt Sunday Jul 15 02:04 PM

All thats missing is some redneck shooting roman candles at it !!!!!

" hey Ya'll WATCH THIS !!!! "

WHOOOOOOM !!!!!!!

It's not PSed, it's just a long lens. This brings the background closer than the scale we're used to, but it also puts the big huge item into relation with all the other things around it.

It's more information than most of the photos in this slideshow. Most of the shots there fail to tell the story.

The bow is all the way in to where the waves are breaking, so it must be empty. Thankfully it's a coal carrier and not a tanker.
I wonder if Cyclefrance's fault? The Pasha probably ran aground while he was peddling his ass around Wipers.

Wow. When I first scrolled down the page, I thought this was two different photographs. I had to go back up to catch the fact that this all happens in the same frame. I'm looking at it now, and it still doesn't seem real. This one really skews your sense of perspective, and the relationship your eye expects between objects. Man. What a trip.

BeltNah Sunday Jul 15 05:44 PM

I actually went and had a look at it.. This and one other photo are the only ones I have seen that do it justice. The guy that owns the kiosk there is making a killing in sales he can't keep up.. He didn't want it to go.

That is what I thought too.

What does not belong in this picture?

spudcon Sunday Jul 15 06:13 PM

Also shot with the long lens was the captain of the Pasha Bulker headed to town for some spinach. He wasn't photoshopped either.

That's Spudcon's picture Dana.
Thanks Bruce, as Ronald Reagan once said "It doesn't matter who gets the credit, as long as the message gets out."

I think it's a pretty damn smart ship. The weather got nasty so, it headed straight for the bar.

Last month had an unusual number of winter storms off the east coast of Australia, with a total of four. The month of storms did far more than just beach a ship, as Bruce showed in his close-up of the roof of the building. One caused flooding around Newcastle in NSW, another caused flooding in the Gippsland district of Victoria.

This winter is sure a lively one this year. Today in Victoria was a day of rain, hail, storms, snow and strong winds, and Melbourne had its coldest day for nine years. The news had a farmer who had snow today as an interesting counterpoint to the drought conditions that prevailed earlier this year.

This is coming six weeks after the warmest May on record.

At least one good thing has come of the weather though. It is raining fairly frequently and that is helping a lot in many drought-parched districts. In Melbourne we've about reached the monthly average for July already and there's still two weeks of July to go.

That's terrible news, Kingswood... I hope all that cold rain and snow doesn't cool down all those hot Aussie women.

Just a bit less skin to be shown Bruce....luckily,knee high boots n go-go dresses are in this season...so there is still plenty of shape to be shown.

Today we are expecting snow down to 500 metres, which is UNHEARD OF in these parts.

The weather is seriously fucked up.

Those Day After Tomorrow dudes had it soooo right!

There's more pics of the boat in Quality Images in the thread 'Massive Waves'.

This was a big thing for us Aussies. Nothing much very exciting ever happens here.
