New section discussion: somethingland

Sexobon pointed out to me that Nothingland is "being crowded by various somethings to the point where those pursuing games, diversions and time wasters can feel guilty about bumping those threads after a significant something has been modestly posted in Nothingland. It's also becoming difficult to wade through the somethings to find the nothings and vice versa."

I agree, but I said that we should at least talk about it in Meta so we are clear about what's happening on the Cellar. The proposal here is that we create Somethingland, to hold threads that are actually meaningful and important to folks, such as the "What" kind of threads that are certainly more than Nothing.

Keep posting in this thread to remind me - I'm crazy busy right now and will probably forget to get this done

I like the idea of somethingland.

I agree that Nothingland is abused with substantial content.

On the other hand, what's the difference between Somethingland, and Home Base?

I as well cannot conceptualize what the distinction would be between the existing Home Base, and the proposed Somethingland. Home Base is (if I understand correcly) the place for substantive, but hard-to-catagorize threads; whereas Nothingland is for the fluff. That being said, we already have to make a value judgment between two "general" sections--how is adding a third "Goldilocks" category going to help us? In my opinion this just adds another rabbit hole for the thread you're looking for to be buried in.

People have been posting some pretty heavy duty stuff in Nothingland. It's like "I really don't want to bother anyone, but since you're apparently not busy, seeing as how you're looking at stuff in Nothingland, maybe you won't mind reading my post here and I'm not being a drama queen - it's Nothing really."

Sometimes people need to get stuff out, but try not to make a big deal over it. In such instances, I think they'll continue to post in Nothingland, even if they have the option of Somethingland. Just my humble opinion.

I use the post whore thread a lot because I don't feel like what I'm posting rises to the level of being important enough for its own thread. Plus, what if I do start my own thread for one of those things, and I only get a polite comment or two? I'll feel more like my thread is a failure.

Is it rude and/or too much work to have moderators move things out of Nothingland with greater discretion, when appropriate?

I would like to note that I am tickled by the name "Somethingland," and would vote to rename Home Base even if nothing else changes.

That seems a good idea. But then it would, it came from Clodfobble's brain.
