Yey! Finally a decent picture of my valley.

I've been trying on and off for the last year or so to try and find a picture online that shows what my home looks like. Usually they're too small, in grainy black and white, the photgrapher's stood at the bottom of a ditch or it's too far down the valley.

But har! I have finally found one that shows exactly what it looks like in the valley where I walk my dog, most days. My village is at the top of the hill to the right of this picture and this is the path I walk my dog along and the cut through I use to get down to the hamlet of Stump Cross.)

(hope this link works. No the lady in the picture is not me. I don't know who she is, but if I saw her from the front, maybe I would recognise her. She may or may not be a local).

Oooooh. There's a page of pictures here of my village!

That is Northowram. 1st picture on the left and first picture on the right both show the entrance to "Upper Lane". A little way down that lane is my house, yey

Second pic down on the right: The long building furthest away, facing towards you, is the village pub, The Shoulder of Mutton. Opposite that pub to the left is a little snicket which joins the two lanes and gives access to the little row of cottages where I live

The village has had constant occupation for well over a thousand years and is mentioned in Domesday (1086) though the name has changed quite a lot since then:P

Domesday entry for Northowram:

Place name: Northowram, Yorkshire
Folio: 379v Great Domesday Book
Domesday place name: Ufrun
People mentioned: Church of Holy Trinity, York; Count Alan; Count W.; Countess Judith; Earnwine; Erneis de Buron; Geoffrey Alselin; Geoffrey de la Guerche; Gospatric; Hugh fitzBaldric, the sheriff; Ilbert de Lacy; King William as landholder; Osbern d'Arques; Ralph Paynel; Richard fitzErfast; Robert Malet; Robert, Count of Mortain; Roger de Bully; Thomas, Archbishop of York; William de Percy

Date 1086

"Roger de Bully" that's my favourite of the names. That's straight out of medieval England a'la Disney:P

Wow! I've forgotten what it's like to live surrounded by fields - it must be wonderful.

Is the village fairly self sufficient (bakery, village shop, Post Office) or is it too small? At least you have the pub I suppose!

It's not Wales, but it reminds me of the exterior scenes in How Green Was My Valley. Of course, the exteriors for that were shot in California.

Neat looking valley.

I like it

It is a very nice place by the look of it...

Somehow, there is a country called New Zealand which is just like that, if is't not even more beautiful...

If you got the chance, check out NZ, you will find your dream world is actually in the reality!

I spent almost a month in NZ on South Island. Beautiful place. Probably the most beautiful country on Earth, at least that I've seen.

What's your name mean, wo ai? Is that Maori?

DanaC, I have just joined this forum. I happened upon it when searching for anything about Northowram and particularly a California Row where my gt. granparents lived in 1881. I think I am going to like the forum and hope to meet some great folks. I just came back from a trip to Yorkshire and the beautiful moors and dales. I can't wait to return.

I was staying in Bingley with a cousin. My dad grew up in Queensbury and my grandparents were married at St. John's, Bradford and they lived in Thornton. And I am interested in the pictures, thank you. Northowram is where my grandmother's parents lived. At least they did in the 1881 census. Haven't found them earlier yet. Absolutely love Yorkshire and esp. the moors. I can identify with Emily Bronte' who also loved them.

Beautiful, amazing valley.

"God, I love the Internet." Yep, know what you mean. It's so fun to see glimpses of people's real lives when you talk to them over the 'Net. My home and terrain couldn't be more different.

Morning DanaC...or I guess, Good afternoon there isn't it. It almost is here too. I slept late today. Catching up on sleep you know? I wondered, does California Row still exist or is it gone or renamed?
