Because this is not spam. I received this notice at work from one of our technical people. To the best of my knowledge, the offer is real.

I have been waiting to get a real version of WinRar. The best I was able to do was get a 40 day trial copy. As far as I know this is a legitimate offer.

It is difficult to get a fully functional free compression utility. The zip that is incoporated into Windows does not have all of the features of commercial compression utilities, namely self-extracting archives and encryption. I hope that this is not a joke, but I trust the source.

Rich,

Ever try 7-Zip? www.7zip.org

This tool, which is Open Source (GPL) has the following:

1. Excellent ZIP support. Better than WinZip for many things.
2. Excellent command-line support under Windows. I actually use the 7z command-line version to automate TAR creation under Windows 2000 Server with Scheduled Tasks. It works extremely well! Other ported utils just don't work as well for automating tasks.
3. Excellent TAR, GZ, and JAR support.
4. In-place editing of JAR files and other supported archives. I just used this to make a custom build of Mozilla Firefox for a customer (I edited XUL files in browser.jar by using TextPad and 7Zip).
5. Really good Windows Explorer support.
6. Unpacks RAR files
7. Supports ARJ, DEB, and RPM unpacking on Windows (sometimes you have to use it there!).

For 90+% of the users out there, it's more than adequate, and is actually a heck of a lot better than WinZip or WinRAR. WinZip does have the feature of encrypted .ZIP files, which many people I know would pay for.

They're probably doing this because 7Zip is free and can decompress RAR archives.

All I know is that I need to utilize tools that work in my job. 7Zip has saved my butt on scheduled jobs and archive editing. I will recommend this tool above any tool you have to pay for unless you have to send encrypted or password-protected ZIP files (and yes, I have had customers who needed that support!), or need to create RAR files.

Did I mention the UI is also a lot less intrusive?

Mitch
