Nov 27, 2010: Bellamy Salute

Francis Bellamy wrote the Pledge of Allegiance in 1892.
A lot of people (read me) don't know it came with a salute, also from Bellamy,
to be used while saying the pledge.

I know, I know, it looks strange now, but that's because thirty-odd years later
Benito started to use it as a Roman Salute, followed by Adolf's Nazi Salute.
When WW II (the big one) came along pictures of American kids that didn't show
the flag too, were open to misinterpretation.

So FDR said we can't have that, and changed it to the hand over heart salute we're familiar with.
Congress made it law at the end of 1942.

Most people also don't know that American children used to goose-step-march in Independence Day parades.

And we have the same social Darwinism movement (Eugenics) that Hitler did as well.

I am glad that the law is currently an unenforceable code; so children asserting their first amendment right can choose not to super conform into groupthink formations. I find that both salutes too closely resemble church and boot camp. Patriotic indoctrination scares me, even though I'd say it is necessary.

Good find Bruce.

Good point, when I said law I was referring to congress changing the uniform flag code at the behest of FDR. That doesn't mean legally required, as in haul you off to the clink for not complying, but it is the guide for teachers, scoutmasters, and other youth indoctrinators. The biggest problem is most people don't know where the hell their heart is.
