February 10, 2008: GEEP

It's a goat... it's a sheep... it's a GEEP.

From the Daily Mail.
Quote:
She was born after an unscheduled amorous encounter on the farm of Klaus Exsternbrink, in Schwerte, in northern Germany's Ruhr Valley. One of his young billy goats leapt over a fence and had a passionate liaison with a ewe.
The result a month ago was Lisa - resembling a lamb in shape and stature, but with the colouring and agile back legs of a goat.

Her mother seems unfazed by her unusual offspring and has raised her happily so far.
Mom is unfazed, but dad has been eaten. Now that's pretty severe punishment.

History

The first sheep-goat chimera was bred in Manumbar QLD Australia; it was created artificially under laboratory conditions was born in 1984,[1] while the first instance created in the U.S. was in 1985 at the University of California, Davis.[2] Researchers fused a sheep embryo with a goat embryo. The resulting creature was a mosaic of mismatched goat and sheep parts. Those parts which grew from the sheep embryo were woolly. [i]Those which grew from the goat embryo were hairy.

It makes the The Island of Doctor Moreau not so science fiction
(y).

that was something i remembered seeing in a car & driver magazine when i was a little kid. i think it was in the one my dad had saved that had the review of his 1970 Datsun 240z in it. I remember reading the article. It said the thing was fast as all hell, and had huge powerful brakes, but it handled like a stage coach. they talked about barreling into turns, and laying on the brakes, then launching out again.

sounded cool at the time.

Curry Geet
by
Xxxxx Xxxxxx

This was listed as one of the national dishes of Jamaica, reserved for special occasions. The original receipe calls for the bones to be included and cooked until tender, but they're using a wild kid geet, not a 100 pound, 6 month old so I left the bones out.

2 pounds geet (stew meat or chili meat works)
1 large onion, chopped
1 garlic clove, minced
1 hot pepper, chopped and seeded ( like it hot?, leave the seeds in)
2 tablespoons of curry powder salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 cups of water

Cut geet into bite sized pieces if it's not already cut up. Combine with the onion, garlic, hot pepper, curry powder, and salt and pepper in a resealable bag. Let it sit in the fridge for 1 hour.

Heat the oil in a skillet over medium heat and brown the geet and vegetables until evenly cooked. Add the water, cover, and simmer for 1 hour. Correct the seasonings to taste and add more water if needed after the hour, then continue to cook until the geet is tender, 20-25 minutes more depending on the meat.

Serve over white rice with green bananas, fried plantains and chutney, or anything you want. You can also add cubed sweet potato or tomatoes to the curry as it cooks.

With a billion goats and sheep over thousands of years...this is the first time this has happened? First time a goat and sheep got it on? First time it resulted in conception?

Probably not, just widely reported for the first time. It's been done in the lab a couple times.

Why not a SHAT instead of a GEEP?
Intragenus (interspecies) hybrids are common: Liger (Panthera), Mule (Equus).
Intrafamily (intergenera) are rare. Perhaps the apparent large tumor near the back leg is one result.

I don't think that's a tumor. If you look at the other pictures at the Daily Mail link, it looks like the huge upper leg muscle of a goat.

Not a SHAT because the male parent usually comes first: a LIGER is specifically the offspring of a male lion and a female tiger. If the male parent is the tiger and the female parent is a lion, the offspring is called a TIGON.

So a SHAT would have a ram for a father, and a female goat for a mother.

'Sides, you don't break up noun groups: it would be shoat if anything and that word already belongs to a little piggy.
