Admittedly, there were--and still are--times when I consider the number of posts to be a contest, though these moments happen less frequently now than in the past.
Why do I do it? I dunno...the competition in me perhaps? The most is best mentality? Just to be an ass? One or more of the above? *shrugs* Do my moments of said mentality produce some lesser quality posts? Perhaps...but I've always tried to create posts that I think will be cool or have some sort of relevance. If I'm not happy with a post, I usually delete it. I know it's stupid...there's absolutely no reason for me to be like that. It's not like Tony gives me a prize for having the most posts or anything like that. It's not like people will bow before me for having the most posts. Whenever I feel one of those moments coming on, I just beat the above into my head...and have continued to do so over the past 3 years. It's starting to stick. There's a fairly good chance that Bruce will pass me in the not-too-distant future, and I'm cool with that. One of these days, I may find myself towards the bottom...and I can handle that. People like and respect me here b/c of WHAT I'm posting, not because of HOW MANY posts I make. Now I can't lie here...it is kinda cool to be the #1 poster. But at the same time, I think there are some disadvantages that come with it...or with being a Top 10 poster. In some cases, people will look at the posts of the top posters to get a general sense of a board. And if they see that you're either posting shit or being an ass to others, that might cause them not to join or stay on the board. Hopefully, if people look at my posts here, they'll see that I'm knowledgeable, funny and respectful. To expand on what Torrere mentioned, if so few people have made the bulk of posts, that might make someone feel like their thoughts won't have any value. I try to be even-handed, but there have been times where I've made a snide remark to a newbie (e.g. a recent remark I made to Jimbo, though I turned it into something humorous later as a sign of my "acceptance" of him). And another problem with being one of the top posters is that you become more of a target to some--though it doesn't seem to happen here much. Xugumad seemed to be a bit like that. What a weenie. In the end, I just try to post cool and/or relevant stuff, be respectful and enjoy the company and insight of others. I have my moments, but I'm working on them. I think we're all works in progress from birth until death anyway... |

Of course, Slang fails to mention what an asshole he was when he first came on.
Here's one of our initial exchanges: slang: "You left wingers may have had fun patting yourselves on the back bashing the Iraqi war/ Republicans/ Bush but you are in the minority now. Sorry." syc: "Now? When would you say the left-wingers were last in the majority? Surely, you're not going to say that the current Democratic-controlled Senate and Clinton are really left-wingers, are you?" slang: "Is tom Dascle left wing.YES! Is Klinton (both Hitlary AND Bill) left wing YES!" syc: "Thanks slang...you just gave me one of the best laughs I've had today. " slang: " I read your sarcasm loud and clear. If you dont think Klinton isnt left wing maybe I should ask what your definition for left wing is." Admittedly, I initially considered slang to be another kook. I was a bit hard on him at first...though he did kinda deserve it. But now, we're buddies...I even created a web page for him. |

My one year anniversary is coming up on New Year's Eve, and I'm in 11th place on the most posted list.
Does anyone have a life for sale?

I'm sure it's Wolf's dedication and TLC that's made Slang the man he is today. Wait...that sounds like blame. No, no.. that's not what I meant at all. Nevermind.
